Flight 1 - Selosse to start (1 Note)

  • NV Jacques Selosse Initial

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

    Alcohol :: 12%
    Light golden in color, very bright with very fine beads that slowly flow in the glass that last till the end of the lunch. The nose show lots of white floral scents and pure white fruits that is lightly honey coated with light oxidative notes: nut and yeast across the aromas spectrum. With time, it developed and evolved into more ripe yellow fruits, melon and some green herbs complexity too. I'm amazed of how approachable it was, at least compare to the last bottle. Not fully open for business, but it show good sense of balance between the acid and fruits that carry out by the very fine moose. Not as good punch or tension than the previous bottle, this is slightly loose. Similar to the nose, the flavors spectrum changed from white fruits to yellow fruits with herbs that underpinned by the acidity and mineral backbone. Finish is good but not long, but this is delicious nevertheless, especially paired with the Truffle and Caviar dishes. Buy - Maybe - Yes.

Flight 2 - White for the appetizer (1 Note)

  • 2002 Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

    Alcohol :: 13.5%
    Very bright light golden, very attractive. The aromas is soft and gentle, but beautiful. I especially like the purity and elegance of this pretty gal that Leflaive can offer. Very ripe fruits and perfume white and yellow florals expression that flow through on the fine, fresh mineral with minimal oak infused aromas that wrapped in a super bright, elegance package. First sipped and the sense of harmonious, purity and elegance thrilled me immediately. Not something explosive nor show-off, this has very bright ripe fruits that gently glide through the palate with really refine, polish, creamy velvety mouth feel with layer of green herbs, fresh honey and very light caramel (yes, not the heavy type that came across as burned). The soft, polish minerality lends a lightness and extra dimension to this wine. The sheer intensity is stunning but no sense of heaviness with pretty integration of oak. I especially like the lingering finish that not let go, with fresh mineral, some citrus and herbs nuanced. Really pretty for a 1er cru and I would say this is at the entry of a Grand Cru level for it sheer class and harmonious. No doubt this is my WOTN. Buy - Yes.

Flight 3 - Red for the Main (1 Note)

  • 2006 Domaine Anne Gros Clos Vougeot Le Grand Maupertui

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

    Alcohol :: 13.5%
    Very bright deep ruby red with light red rim that display energetic, youthful aromas of black and blue Pinot fruits, some earthy tones and mineral that has touch of iron complexity in it. This is so bright and fresh. Full bodied, layer and layer of rich, concentrated dark and red fruits coated the palate with care, as the fruits are bright and lively. Thanks to the generous fruits that this wine possessed, it buffers off the medium level of firm, but ripe tannin and dry extract hence the very smooth, almost seamless mouth feel that is great effort for Clos Vougeot compared to those I have had before that seems rather edgy and rustic. The balance here is top class and though not highly complex in flavor, it does offer grand-cru level of depth and refinement. Some roasted herbs and mineral kick in here and leads to the medium length, juicy finish. I would say this is in between old school and modern in style, but nicely done with no excessive of oak, in fact, the oak has pretty much absorbed by the fruits. Delicious to drink now, but I would give this another 5yrs to develop more for the secondary nuances. Buy - Yes.
