Introduction

Thought we would relax the day after Magnums for David with something more casual...but too much great wine seemed to show up.

  • 1998 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Cros Parantoux Flawed

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Never one of my favorite vintages of this great wine, but this time is was slightly corked.

  • 2000 Emmanuel Rouget Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Cros Parantoux 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Great floral start with lots of spice. Unquestionably Vosne with its spice and elegance. Good fruit depth and concentration, with plenty of power on the finish. Perhaps not a CP that will last decades, but certainly good for at least one more decade.

  • 1990 Emmanuel Rouget Echezeaux 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

Challenging wine to evaluate. Sensational start with rich and bold flavors and spice. Very nuanced overall with lots of power. I even wrote "will last for decades" as we were tasting within the first hour, but this wine changed after about two hours into something far less interesting. My "92" is a mental average of it being a "94" for the first hour but ending as a "90" at best, which shouldn't be happening with a wine form this vintage.

  • 1982 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

At its peak. This wine balances lush black fruit with great texture and the emerging charm that comes with bottle age. Still showing lots of pepper and lovely bacon flavors. Long, evolving finish. Not the best bottle I've ever had, but a very pleasurable wine.

  • 1983 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline 91 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

I know it's over 25 years old, but this bottle showed more age than expected. It had a really good spice profile but not the concentration and rich flavors I hoped for. Was it slightly heat damaged?

  • 1991 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline 97 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Black fruit with great spice on the nose. Similar fruit profile on palate. Floral charm unfolds with time in the glass, this wine has layers upon layers of flavor and texture. Dense, rich, concentrated, still almost completely primary. Second time I have tried this wine. First time - it was the best Rhone wine I ever had, this one just a shadow behind. I hate when a Rhone wine is WOTN when there are plenty of great Burgs on the table!

Closing

Sad for the number of flawed bottles, but the great bottles' excellence made it worth the effort!
