Introduction

Standard Wine Ark Tasting. As it it our hosts last session he has chosen some of his favourite wines for the last flight.

Flight 1 - Eden Road (4 Notes)

Wine making in NSW right next to the ACT. I was impressed by the Canberra Shiraz.

  • 2010 Eden Road Riesling The Long Road

Australia, New South Wales, Southern New South Wales, Canberra District

Pale. On the nose almost peach, floral and fragile. In the mouth there is grape with slight candy floss tones and stone fruit. Medium acid and a short medium finish that ends with white pepper. I would never have picked this as a riesling blind. Nice.

  • 2008 Eden Road Pinot Noir The Long Road

Australia, New South Wales, Southern New South Wales, Tumbarumba

Pale red with medium minus intensity. On the nose some red fruit and a touch of earthiness. In the mouth a little red fruit then some bitter astringency. Not much else going on. Nah.

  • 2009 Eden Road Shiraz The Long Road

Australia, New South Wales, Southern New South Wales, Canberra District

On the nose it starts green and funky but on agitation reveals peppercorn and floral notes with touches of rose (?). In the mouth I get black fruit, aniseed, medium acidity, medium plus tannin and, unfortunately, medium plus alcohol heat that washes over this and gives a slightly belchy acid heat feel.

  • 2009 Eden Road Shiraz Canberra

Australia, New South Wales, Southern New South Wales, Canberra District

Nose: Cedar, perfume, green peppercorns, young but balanced. Very clean nose
Mouth: Medium plus acid and tannin over black fruit and cream lending an almost black forest gateaux feel. Long finish.
    Very pleasant indeed.

Flight 2 - Leeuwin Estate (5 Notes)

Iconic Margaret River winery specialising in Chardonnay (considered one of Australia's best) and Cabernet Sauvignon.

  • 2010 Leeuwin Estate Sauvignon Blanc Art Series

Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

Lemon to lemon green with a medium minus intensity
Nose: capsicum, green grass that almost touches asparagus
Mouth: tropical (especially passion) fruit, no real grassy characteristics.
Nice but disappears almost straight away. Lacks finish.

  • 2007 Leeuwin Estate Chardonnay Art Series

Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

Pale lemon. On the nose cream, stone fruit, oak, quite youthful still, needed time to open and then, as well as the aforementioned it revealed a little sweet spice. In the mouth it's stone fruit, cream, crisp acidity and a touch of malolactic. It still feels a bit unintegrated, as if it needs time to settle down. Hmm.

  • 2001 Leeuwin Estate Chardonnay Art Series

Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

Golden and oily, thick legs. On the nose I get cream, honey, stone fruit and a slight floral tone. In the mouth I am struck by the acidity over creamy buttery tones. Subtle stone fruit and a long finish. The oak is move obvious in the mouth as well. This tasting was from magnum.

  • 2006 Leeuwin Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Art Series

Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

Purple with slight rim fade and noticeable legs. On the nose I get what I consider classic Margaret River; Eucalypt, mint and a touch of pyrazine. Lovely. Brambly fruit over hints of cream and butter and tiny hints of menthol. In the mouth more acid than tannin and bramble. Quite tart and austere. Medium short finish. Probably more of a reflection of vintage, I think 06 was a bit lousy in MR.

  • 2001 Leeuwin Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Art Series

Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

Ruby, opaque and long legs in the glass. On the nose tobacco and leather over eucalyptus and mint. Some meaty/savoury tones. I also get oak/cedar. Touches of dark fruit. In the mouth I have a bit of a fruit up front mid scoop then back again experience. There is medium acid and tannin and a long finish. Very nice indeed.

Flight 3 - Craig's favourites (6 Notes)

A little selection of the wines that Craig actually likes (rather than the ones he tries to flog us every month regardless of varietal, region, vintage etc etc). One of the Chassagne's was flawed so I went to another bottle. All of the CndP had secondary fermentation - not sure what that was about but I am aware that Dom de Villeneuve is biodynamic and organic. I think we were just a bit unlucky.

Closing

Good tasting. Ever since I picked up a bottle of 95 & 97 Leeuwin Estate Chardonnay I've loved their stuff. Personally I feel that their Cab Sav is a bit of a bargain comparatively as it is so overshadowed by the Chardonnay. But not the 2006. The Eden Road Shiraz was a winner for me, especially the Canberra. They also showed a Chardonnay from a cool region called Tumbarumba (honestly!) but for some reason I don't have a note for it. The Bressan ended up gracing the cellar as did the Eden Road Canberra Shiraz.
