Introduction

a nice weekday afternoon...that went very very wrong... right after Patrick pulled out two bottles from 1990! OH MY ... truthfully this was one of the best nights ever... YEHAA! Patrick, Bob - thanks guys!!!

Flight 1 (2 Notes)

We had grilled flank steak and roated (rosemary and garlic) potatoes - the rustic food really worked well with the wines.

  • 1998 Tenuta le Potazzine Brunello di Montalcino 92 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

powerfull nose of cherry and leather, good fruit, but a bit lacking in the middle and finish (compared to the Burg...) with time the tannins mellowed and the wine gained complexity. good solid Brunello that went well with the food... i think i need more brunellos for the cellar.

  • 1990 François Gaunoux Pommard 1er Cru Les Grands Épenots 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru

oh my.... the best burg i've had...even if this is a bit young. Rustic power meets balance and elegance... earthy, flowery, with amazing acidity and body. so much going on in the middle here... unedning finish... very complex, long sweet wine, with time even more complex, with the nose that keeps going from fruit to leathery/earthy to flowers... just a pure pleasure

Flight 2 (1 Note)

you really dont need food for this one...at all...just sip

  • 1990 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel 99 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

pure heaven in a glass..this had it all... the only thing it needed was more time. it started out light in the nose but with time becamo more comples, with fruit (apples, grapefruit and pineapple) and petrol. this is still obviously off-dry but by no means heavy or syropy. in fact - its more of a food/cheese wine that a dessert wine. we had it alone - which is the PERFECT match :)
the palatte is trully where it knocks the wind out of you. apples lead the way but the honey/smooth/silkey midpallate trully blows you away... and the finish,,,it doesnt end. the single most amazing riesling exp so far for me... trully...with some more time it gained tea-like notes, acidity came back fuller and made it even more refreshing...as Patrick noted - you cant stop drinking these... the combination of lightness and refreshing quality - i can finish a gallon of this :)
    OMG...

Flight 3 (1 Note)

italian "cookies" with orange preserve in the middle... i find these to be a perfect match for dessert wine..they are completly boring but take nothing away form the wine. they are also satisfying, sweet and tangy. (and the flavor profile matches perfectly)

  • 2004 Inniskillin Vidal Icewine Oak Aged 91 Points

Canada, Ontario, Niagara Peninsula, Niagara Peninsula VQA

this is a nice tropical dessert wine. i wanted to open something fun but not too thick. it was fun...not very complex but a nice nose and good acidity to keep it fresh. really out of the running tonight.
