Introduction

Another epic offline with the NY/NJ crew with tons of great wine. Notes are in the order they were served.

Flight 1 - White Wines (4 Notes)

  • 1999 M. Chapoutier Hermitage Blanc Chante-Alouette

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

Very interesting aromatics on the nose of peach, eucalyptus, caramel, and the sort of briny olive notes I associate with sherry. Medium bodied with an oily texture, medium high acid and a bit short on the finish. I seemed to pick up some very subtle bruised apple notes making me think that this bottle was just starting to get a little oxidized.

  • 2009 Pride Mountain Vineyards Viognier

    USA, California, Sonoma County

Pop and pour. Tons of rubber/latex/bandaid on the nose with underlying tropical fruit. Tropical fruit on the palate with medium body, medium acid and a creamy mouthfeel.

Later Mike served me a glass of this blind. The aromatics had changed entirely to peach and tropic fruit. The rubber was completely gone. But I managed to guess it correctly for it's structure and mouthfeel.

  • 2008 François Villard Condrieu DePoncins

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Condrieu

Pretty, intense and complex nose with tons of florals, stone fruit and slightly spicy herbal notes. Very well balanced with medium body, medium high acidity, creamy texture and a long finish. Very nice.

  • 2001 R. López de Heredia Rioja Blanco Viña Gravonia

Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja

Gold color in the glass. Medium intensity complex aromatics with notes of smoke, caramel, vanilla and American oak. Similar notes on the palate with hints of citrus and sherry notes. Creamy mouthfeel with high acidity. I saved some in my glass and it was killer with the shrimp appetizer.

Flight 2 - Really Old (1 Note)

  • 1966 Château Cantenac Brown

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

I was a little surprised at how good the color still was: medium dark garnet. Very earthy nose that seemed distinctly mossy that does open up slightly to reveal some vanilla. Hints of cherry initially on the palate but otherwise mostly flat. Medium to medium high tannin and medium acid.

Flight 3 - Served Blind (1 Note)

  • 2005 Les Crêtes Syrah Coteau La Tour

    Italy, Valle d'Aosta

Served blind. Medium intensity ruby color in the glass. Funky nose with notes of red fruit, black pepper, and a lot of greenness or pyrazine. Similar notes on the palate. Medium high to high acidity. Medium high tannin. Short finish. Definitely old world based on the structure. The greenness had me thinking a French cabernet franc, and the pepperiness had me thinking it might also be a somewhat under ripe French GSM blend, perhaps with some stemminess.
