An opportunity to try some 2010 bottle samples from Thienpoint as well as some back vintages of Pavie Macquin and Vieux Chateau Certan with Ultimo.
Standard bun fight with nowhere to lean to write notes hence the horrendous quality of these. I did not enjoy any of the wines really with the exception of the 06 Les Chenes de Macquin and the 09 Chateau Puygueraud. I found the Vieux Chateau Certan and Pavie Macquin over-engineered and homogenised and, ultimately, disappointing.
2009 Château Pavie Macquin
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Jammy/toasty. engineered. disappointing.

1998 Château Pavie Macquin
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
leather, red over black fruit - both subdued. medium plus tannin, medium minus acid. okay.

too homogenised - anywhere in the world could have produced this wine.

2010 Vieux Château Certan
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
Very new world. Don't get me wrong, this wine is impeccably made but it has as much soul as a lump of concrete. The oak is tannic and grippy, the fruit is dark and jammy - concentrated to a preposterous degree, the acid licks at the palate. Close to perfect wine-making - they obviously spent a lot of effort on this utterly forgettable wine. Yawn.

2009 Vieux Château Certan
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
Less new world but still not what I perceive (in my naivety) what Bordeaux should be. It has chalky tannin, alcohol heat, medium plus acidity and wet red fruit over biscuit.
