A well-placed friend who owns a winery managed to get me in to the bottom floor of this mega-tasting. I only got to sample half of the wines on offer, but it was still an incredible, well, experience.
2008 Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Taillepieds 89 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
Fruity, ripe cherry. Refreshing and balanced. Unusually gulpable for a Burgundy.

2009 Bergström Pinot Noir Bergström Vineyard 90 Points
USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills
A fascinating chameleon of a wine. I swear this had Bordeaux aromatics of cedar and tobacco. It tastes much redder than it smells and has appropriate Pinot acidity but is ripe and rich. Would love to try again where I could focus more on it and watch it develop.

2001 Château Canon 87 Points
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Dark fruit but not many secondary notes, and notable sourness in the midpalate. Sharp.

2008 Viña Cobos Corte U Nico 87 Points
Argentina, Mendoza
Opulent, overly sweet dark fruit--a dead ringer for a spoofy Cali Cab. Too syrupy for my palate.

2006 Elderton Shiraz Single Vineyard Command 88 Points
Australia, South Australia, Barossa
Good Shiraz typicity, dark-fruited and meaty. A little sharpness on the roof of the mouth might be heat.

2001 Château Gruaud Larose
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
Nose is coming together with a classic fruit/pencil mix, but still biting in the mouth. Let it sit. 86 on current drinking/90-91 potential?

2006 Château Haut-Brion
France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
Not drinking yet. Closed nose and tannic on the palate. No idea what this will turn into.

2008 Henschke Shiraz Mount Edelstone 90 Points
Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Eden Valley
Powerful bouquet of dark fruits, spice, and herbs. Rich plum in the mouth. A little heavy.

2009 Kosta Browne Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast
USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
Ick. This is so ripe and sweet it's like strawberry chewing gum. Wine isn't supposed to taste like this--particularly not Pinot Noir. No score as I can't evaluate something I would never consider drinking.

1998 Château Lafite Rothschild 94 Points
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
My first Lafite. ZOMFG nose--haunting, enchanting, mesmerizing. I couldn't quite say it was anything other than the standard blackcurrant/tobacco/pencil Bordeaux mix, but with a wild intensity and staying power. I smelled this across the room, I smelled this when I left the tasting, I smelled this at the bar aftewards, I smelled this even when I was shoving pizza down my throat at 3 AM. And then I smelled it in my dream. And the wine had a heartwarming elegance and softness. This isn't quiite in its drinking window--the tannin still overpowers the fruit and obscures the tertiary characteristics--but that shouldn't take long to come into balance, just a few years. Believe the hype: there's a reason people part with their life savings for this wine.

2008 Clos Apalta 89 Points
Chile, Rapel Valley, Colchagua Valley, Apalta
Tastes like Cab Sauv, but on the sweeter side. Dark fruit and lush mouthfeel. A bit clipped.

2009 Louis Latour Corton-Grancey 88 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
Fairly ripe, tart acidity but not too biting. Raspberry profile. Needs food.

2006 Château La Mission Haut-Brion
France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
A little more giving on the nose than the 2006 Haut Brion, but not much. Tannic and sour in the mouth. Put this away for a decade.

2008 Bodega Noemia de Patagonia Malbec 88 Points
Argentina, Patagonia, Río Negro
A bit reticent on the nose. Sweet blackberry in the mouth, a little astringent. Doesn't quite deliver.

2003 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron 90 Points
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
At the start of its drinking window. Still primary and a bit harsh, but the secondary elements are starting to emerge. One to watch.

1981 Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon Monte Bello 90 Points
USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains
Mature and drinking nicely. Restrained tobacco nose, surprisingly tangy (maybe an orange undertone?) and not-too-dark fruit. Tannin resolved. Understated.

2008 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Morey St. Denis 1er Cru Clos de La Bussière 88 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru
Bright, refreshing, acidic. But not enough fruit to balance out the tartness for me.

2007 Saxum James Berry Vineyard 89 Points
USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles
Very rich, modern, opulent, ripe, sweet, dark-fruited. Tastes a little too manipulated and syrupy for me.
