Shy nose with red cherry and tart berries. Medium-bodied with weak fruit, harsh tannins and balancing acidity. Fairly long. Disappointing at this stage.

  • 2004 Marimar Estate Pinot Noir Don Miguel Vineyard 92 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

Excellent pinot. Still youthful, with strawberries, red cherries, violets, smoke and floral scents. Medium-bodied, firm but fine tannins that require some further aging, rich fruit and high acidity offering vibrancy. Long aftertaste. Cellar for 2-3 more years.

  • 2005 Domaine Drouhin Oregon Pinot Noir 93 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

Tasted alongside another 5 pinots from various origines, this was WOTN, with Marimar Don Miguel Vineyard 2004 following closely. Unsurprisingly, the 2 Burgundies (Louis Jadot Volnay 2006 and Jean Bouchard Gevvrey-Chambertin La Justice 2005) were the least exciting wines of the bunch. Unlike Marimar, this was at its peak right now, so I wouldn't be surprised if the ranking of the 2 best wines wouldl be reversed in a couple of years. Dark ruby-garnet. Gorgeous nose with raspberries, violets, cherries and scents of coffee. Med+ body, velvety texture, rich fruit, obviously riper and softer compared to Marimar, balancing acidity and long aftertaste. Excellent with beef tagliata.
