Introduction

Interesting comparison of great wines from varied vintages that highlight one or more different aspects of red Burgundy - Fruit, Alcohol, Acidity and Tannin, with "Balance" representing those wines/vintages that balance all four.

Flight 1 (8 Notes)

  • 2000 Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Chaumes 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Seated wine tasting. Soft red fruit on nose and palate with moderate spice hints. Very accessible today with overall good balance, this is at its peak now.

  • 2003 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

Seated wine tasting. Red cherry and strawberry aromas with spice in background. A clear product of the vintage, showing ripe fruit to start followed by a fair degree of structure, then both power and heat on finish. I'd hold onto this for at least 5 years, probably 10, to see if this becomes more harmonious and develops into something more interesting.

  • 1996 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Volnay 1er Cru Santenots-Du-Milieu

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

Seated wine tasting. Started with floral aromatics, followed by slightly harsh fruit at first on the palate with pronounced acids, overt tannins and noticeable new oak. Took a while in glass to show anything accessible today, but the finish showed great power and density. Wonderful aging potential.

  • 1996 Domaine Leroy Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Seated wine tasting. Dark color. Incredibly floral and perfumed start, classically Leroy. All red fruit on palate with lots of elegant, soft tannins and acids that help increase the power and energy to a very long, exciting spicy finish.

  • 1988 Joseph Drouhin Grands-Echezeaux 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru

Seated wine tasting. Glorious perfumed start, very surprising for a 1988. Red and black cherry aromas and flavors, structure is well integrated, helping provide length and persistence throughout. Far better than another bottle in the US 5 years ago, at which point the structure still dominated the palate. Just entering its peak drinking window.

  • 2002 Sylvain Cathiard Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Seated wine tasting. Floral aromas with plenty of spice and subtle black fruit. Gorgeous flavors nicely integrate spice and fruit along with the wine's substantial structure, that is perfectly just below the surface. A bit of new oak still stands out, but there is so much of everything in this wine that I expect it will continue to evolve and improve for a decade or more and be wonderful for another 15+ years.

  • 2002 Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair La Romanée 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Romanée Grand Cru

Seated wine tasting. Lots of black fruit aromas with some red cherry and Asian spice hints. Blockbuster, dense black fruit on palate. Traces of new oak, yet otherwise the fruit holds up perfectly to the structure and backbone. Long and powerful finish, just a baby of a wine today, great long-term cellar potential.
