Introduction

Ed's big day and he generously opened 6bottles of great wines to share with us (a pair of 1971 right bank, a flight of left bank and red burg). 18bots for the night and by far the most bottles in a dinner in 2011. We aim to break the record in 2012 ^^

Flight 1 - Flight 1 - Aperitif (2 Notes)

Great QPR!

  • 2009 A.J. Adam Hofberg Riesling Spätlese 92 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

    Alcohol :: 7.5%
    #04. Light golden. Double decanted for 8hrs. This is another delicious Riesling, well made and refine! The soft but intense elegant nose is perfume, loaded with soft chalky mineral, yellow flowers, crush stone, lemon and grapefruits. The palate is very elegant too woth good sense of harmony. The soft mineral backbone sketch out the features of this Riesling along with lemon, melon sweetness that leads to good dry, intense clean finish, lingering. When down with bigger sip, this is very juicy and full filling, good depth yet light on its feet. Great wine.

  • 2009 Louis Jadot Beaune 1er Cru Celebration 89 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

    Alcohol :: 13.5%
    Vibrant ruby red. Youthful, very perfume aromas of red florals, red cherry and chalky minerality. Entry was soft, make me wonder what's the fuss about this wine, but the later part proved me wrong. The structured started to show after the entry. This has excellent mid palate sap with lots of bright red fruits and some dark fruits that firmly supported by the firm tannic backbone. One will not believe a wine with this material for the mid term only cost less than GBP20! While this seem a little bit fruit driven, the oak kick in here that bring in mocha like aftertaste on the truly juicy, long finish. Very good!

Flight 2 - Flight 2 (1 Note)

  • 2004 Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

    Alcohol :: 13.5%
    Wow, what a intense, powerful nose. Pungent vanilla, dried herb, smoke, oak, lemon and pear. Oaky, tannic with bright fruits underlying, good mid palate sap with stunning weight that is focus but also a little bit heavy on the super long finish with mineral, vanilla and dried herbs aftertaste. This has structured and depth, but also heavy dose of oak that mask the fruits and resulted in heavy mouth feel and not elegant at all. This is really different from the previous bottle, dumb phase?

Flight 3 - Flight 3 - Bordeaux (2 Notes)

Lalande - Good but a bit tired, prefer previous bottle.
Brane-Cantenac - Alive but not really exciting.

  • 1983 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 88 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    Alcohol :: 12.5%
    Bright ruby core with brick rim. Soft deep note of tobacco, leather, pencil leads, creme de cassis and ink, with smokiness evolved after some air to give it slightly more dimension. Fresh but a little bit soft, though still with good sap, secondary complexity but not so much density. The length is pretty long though, with soft elegant mineral and dark chocolate finish. The previous bottle showed better than this.

  • 1966 Château Brane-Cantenac 86 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

    Milky brownish. We would not have guessed this correctly, 1966! Fully matured, or was it over the peak? Perfume nose that is full of matured aromas of antique furniture shop, mushroom with dried floral, blackcurrant and earth. Alive, but very simple, some light fruits, mineral and autumn leaves. Light on the finish too. Great experience though.

Flight 4 - Flight 4 - The 1971 duo (2 Notes)

The finest example from 1971 vintage so far. Both wines rock!

  • 1971 Château Trotanoy 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

    The color looks much older than the next wine (1971 Magdelaine). Brickish. Exquisite aromas of leather, antique furniture, soft perfume of dried dark and red fruits, earth and touch of tea leaves, very lively, intense and complex. The palate is surprisingly much youthful than the darker color Magdelaine, so rich and powerful with impeccable balance, integrated, some lushness on the entry over the beautifully structured with the depth built toward the mid palate and gone full force at the super intense, stunning juicy finish that delivered such complexity and nuances. The touch of spiciness not only added complexity but also expand on the finish with better dimension along with dark chocolate, roasted herbs after taste. Drinking very nicely, the best 1971 I have had so far.

  • 1971 Château Magdelaine 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

    Darker brick red than the Trotanoy. The matured aromas is really expressive and complex, old saddle leather, cigar box, tobacco leaves intermixed with sweet plum, blackberry and dried flower. Lifted and complex on the palate with rich entry and superb mid palate sap but goes a little bit softer on the long finish, though not as intense as the Trotanoy but very persistent. This getting even lusher with air together with just a touch of tannin for better grip and expand across the palate with good tension after some air in the glass. Wow.

Amazing is the word...

  • 2002 Bouchard Père et Fils Corton-Charlemagne Domaine 94 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

    Alcohol :: 13.5%
    Open 4hrs an decanted for 3hrs. I thought the 2002 should be somewhere near approachable but I was wrong, so wrong. Almost painfully young before decanted, restrained, tight and harder than a rock. Youthful light golden color. Soft but highly complex aromas that is very serious, deep and broad shoulder with amazing level of sweet yellow and white fruits in the core that wrapped in a beautiful soft mineral package and decorated by toasted nut, honey, abundant of herbs and floral. Dense, strucured but with incredible mid palate sap that coated the palate with vanilla oak, herbs, bright yellow and white fruits that offer superb finesse and weight but light on its feet. Still a baby but the class and purity is here. Long long juicy finish with a trace of oak and mineral for the grip. Super. Need to grab more. 94-95+

Flight 6 - Flight 6 - Red burgs (2 Notes)

Maume - Fine example of Mazis but remained modestly price
Miichel Gaunoux - By far the best pommard that I have ever had.

  • 1999 Domaine Maume Mazis-Chambertin 91 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru

    Alcohol :: 13%
    Dark ruby with pink rim. Expressive nose with the most high tone aroma of meatiness that indicate well display the terroir along with dark and red cherry, plum, earth and touch of caramel. Very sweet and rich on the palate with complex flavors of dried tea leaves, smoke meat, hoisin sauce and firm tannin grip for the solid backbone and chalky mineral tailing the powerful finished that showed good purity with excellent grip and tension. Maume Mazis is always one of the sweet spot as well as fine example of Mazis.

  • 2003 Domaine Michel Gaunoux Pommard 1er Cru Rugiens-Bas 93 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru

    Alcohol :: 13.5%
    Dark ruby with pink hue. Very sweet on the nose with powerful dark fruits that wrapped by meatiness and spices. Sweet but not over the top, huge sappiness and this is especially fine for this plot without any rusticity. Fullish and expansive on te mouth. Still a baby. This have all the material, harmony for the very long lived and develop for greater complexity and nuances. A great Pommard!! 93-94+

Flight 7 - Flight 7 - More Red burgs (3 Notes)

  • 1999 Domaine Francois Lamarche La Grande Rue 92 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Grande Rue Grand Cru

    Alcohol :: 13.9%
    Dark ruby red with light brown rim. Exotic Asian spices, dried herbs, autumn leaves sailing along with a boat loads of sweet dark fruits ans touch of red fruits that keep evolving and changing in the glass, kaleidoscopic! This has darkest fruits profile within today line up of burgundy. I always think that La Grand Rue is one of the longest live red burgundies, this bottle re-inforce my thought which easily need another decade to enter the drinking window. Solid structured and large scale, but with incredible sap and dry extract that buffered it as well as the firm tannin to form the excellent depth toward the long , lingering spicy infused finish with excellent energy and drive. This is a very long lived wine for a least 20decades. 92-94

  • 2002 Nicolas Potel Romanée St. Vivant 92 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru

    Alcohol :: 13.5%
    Medium ruby red with light hue. Tighter than the roty but deeper and larger scale. The nose is still rather primary that loaded with fresh plum, blackberry, haw flakes intermixed beautifully with Asian spiciness and earth. Harmony, though not big scale but perfectly balance, razor sharp focus and precision, beautifully layer with polished structured that leads to the truly fine tannin for the grip, long lingering finish though not still a little bit shy. This should continue to evolve in the bottle for a decade and I hope will gain better weight in the bottle too. 92-94

  • 1993 Domaine Joseph Roty Griotte-Chambertin 91 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru

    Alcohol :: 13.5%
    Opened for 1hrs+. Lots of sediment. Haw flakes, sweet figs paste and dried berries wrap with autumn leaves, dried rose petal and eastill very complex and perfume though not necessary large scale. Still possess good concentration of sweet dark and red fruits, well balance with autumn leaves, dried tea leave and mineral that formed the good depth and structured with medium length, spicy infused finish. Delicous but I expect better length for this.

Flight 8 - Flight 8 - CDP (2 Notes)

  • 1999 Domaine Pierre Usseglio & Fils Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée du Cinquantenaire 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    Alcohol :: 14%
    very dark ruby red with light rim. Opened for 4hrs. I had no bad Deux Freres so far and this apply to the very first vintage too. The nose is pretty shut, with pungent spiciness and smoke meat that buried the sweet dark fruits underneath. This only come to the impressive almost 2.5hrs later. Unmistakably a top notch CdP that revealed highly perfume aromas of smoke meat, kirsch, dried herbs, earth with solid core of sweet dark fruits, predominantly red cherry and blue berry fruits. This was nowhere near the peak or fully mature from what I had read in various sources. Still tannic and structured along with massive level of sweet dark fruits that coated the mouth with incredible richness and concentration of high level of sweet fruits. The tannin is fine but a little bit rustic but absolutely no way distractive that showed the character of this prestige cuvée. This is incredible good, opulent, delineated and stunning juicy long finish offer great complexity, dark chocolate, bitter sweet cocoa, kirsch and also dried herbs. Hard to believe this is the first vintage of this lovely juice. 93

  • 2009 Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes 94 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    Alcohol :: 15.5%
    Double decant for 8hrs and decanted again for 3.5hrs. Obviously the preparation is not long enough (need a day.... =.=) to bring out the full beauty of this brilliant juice. The nose is incredibly deep, complex and broad-shoulder that filled with kirsch, spices, smoke, sweet dark fruits along with crushed stone, blue floral scents for the liveliness and focus. This super powerful VV is muscular, opulent and expansive on the palate, yet with laser like focus and precision all wrapped in an unctuous texture which boosted the finesse deep within. The concentration is unreal yet so fresh and lifted by the solid, polished structured as well as massive level of very silky, sweet tannin. This has everything for the long haul. 2009 is more a forward drinking vintage? I don't think so, at least for this. The powerful, succulent finished lasted more than 30sec and lingered with spices, sweet dark fruits and mineral. 94-95+

Flight 9 - Flight 9 - Bord (2 Notes)

  • 1989 Château Montrose 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

    Alcohol :: 13%
    To be honest I was a bit disappointed when the identity of this wine being revealed. It was good, but certainly not great, compared to the younger brother 2003, 2005 and 2009. Dark garnet core with brick rim.The very spicy aroma is intense an also quite pungent with alcohol. Slowly, more dark fruits, tobacco and soil note emerged. Started a little bit weak on the palate but with time, this structured, powerful juice put on more weight and mouth coating intensity that offer very good mid palate depth and stunning sap. This is wonderfully structured and layer with liveliness and super intense long finish. Very good, though the alcohol on the nose and slightly rustic tannin mark a notch down of the purity and finesse.

  • 2003 Château Latour Grand Vin 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    Alcohol :: 13%
    Opened at 7am. decanted at 3pm. poured back at 6pm. Decanted at 7pm. Served at 11pm. This dark ruby red juice is still youthful, in fact, infant. Seductive and highly complex aromas of creme de cassis, blackcurrant, blackberry, pencil leads, tobacco and cigar with perfume violet added additional breadth to it. The richness is off the chart, detail layer and multi dimensional that expand across the mouth with enormous intensity and lushness with incredible focus and precision. The tannin is massive but ripe and balance by with incredible underlying sweet fruits that buffer the abundance of dry extract, firm but silky fine tannin that forms the informidible structured but light on otis feet with excellent purity and finesse. Wow!! Super long finish. 94-96
