Introduction

The best wine club in the Twin Cities did another stellar event at Becky's House. NO corked wine as always and the wines showed well overall.

1st place Muga Aro (10 points)
2nd Mas Doix Costers (8 points)
3rd LAN Edicion (7 points)
3rd Resalte (7 points)

The Muga is an amazing wine and worth cellaring for a decade or more.

Flight 1 (9 Notes)

  • 2005 Alvaro Palacios Priorat Les Terrasses 90 Points

    Spain, Catalunya, Priorat

Solid and in its drinking window. Raspberries, spice, cherries and mild earth. A fruit forward style with smooth tannins. Drink now.

  • 2004 Rotllan Torra Priorat Tirant 93 Points

    Spain, Catalunya, Priorat

Great showing and should improve a bit over the next few years. Raspberries, earth, spice, cherry and minerals. A blend of five grapes and balanced. Medium finish. Drink now - 2014.

  • 2006 Mas Doix Priorat Salanques 88 Points

    Spain, Catalunya, Priorat

Junior version of what is to come later. Fruit forward along with spice and floral. Lacks any complexity of the Rotllan. Medium finish and drink now.

  • 2005 Bodegas Altanza Rioja Lealtanza Reserva Club 87 Points

Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja

A WTSO wine that is good but not great. I am not sure cellar time will help this. It did improve a bit over the night. Cranberry, vanilla, oak and candied fruit. The wine is a bit sweet in style for my taste. Short to medium finish.

  • 2004 Bodegas LAN Rioja Edición Limitada 94 Points

Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja

A knockout wine! Leather, spice, chocolate, leather and blueberries. Firm tannins but a lot showing now. This will age beautifully and should drink well for two decades. Long finish and super complex wine.

  • 1995 Bodegas LAN Rioja Reserva Culmen 90 Points

Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja

Nice aged wine with bay leaves, spice, sour cherry, earth and minerals. A bit of a raisin quality on the palate. Medium finish. A bit bitter and certainly a food wine.

  • 2004 Mas Doix Priorat Costers de Vinyes Velles 94 Points

    Spain, Catalunya, Priorat

Wow wine! Dark red with blueberries, earth, minerals and spices. More elegant than the 2004 Muga and this will need some more cellar time. Medium to long finish and balanced. Great acidity. 94+

  • 2000 Bodegas Resalte de Peñafiel Ribera del Duero Gran Resalte 95 Points

Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero

One of the great wines under $50 in my lifetime. Always shows well. Two hour decant and that is all it needs. Funk, spice, cherry, oak, vanilla and spices. Long finish and complex. Wish I had more but drink them while they are good. At the end of the night the wine fell apart in the glass so I would recommend drink now.

  • 2004 Bodegas Muga Rioja Aro 96 Points

Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja

A early top ten wine of the year. A powerhouse and tannic but showing a ton. Blackberries, bing cherries, leather, cigar, oak, vanilla and a hint of mint. Long finish, complex and age worthy. Drink now through 2030. 96-98.
