Introduction

Thanks to Brian and Jennifer for inviting us all to Providence for the Monday no corkage night and the $75 5 course tasting menu they are offering for their (restaurant's!) 7 year anniversary. Really fun evening. All the wines (and cocktails) were showing very well, thus my somewhat flat ratings (all around 92...). Amazing food, and great company. The extra sommelier picks were especially fun. Thanks very much to Eric for that special extravagance!

Flight 1 (8 Notes)

  • 2002 Jean Baillette-Prudhomme Champagne 91 Points

    France, Champagne

This had a ton of character with a nutty, earthy aspect, great power and acidity as well. Not a shy wine, this went really well with the amuses bouches. Maybe 92. I'd definitely get this again. 65% Chard, 35% Pinot Noir from Montagne de Reims.

  • 2005 Domaine Bitouzet-Prieur Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

Pure minerals; fairly racy and almost chablis-like with a slight sea-breeze aroma. Great intensity, with a long finish. Beautiful with the Fluke. Excellent Meursault although not very classic--maybe much less oak on this?

  • 2007 Domaine / Maison Vincent Girardin Corton-Charlemagne 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

Medium dark yellow; potent nose of melon and pit fruit with a good dose of limestony minerality and well integrated oak with a pie crust, light caramel aspect. Rich, powerful, with nice intensity and long finish. Very good with the Halibut. Maybe 93

  • 2004 Alban Vineyards Roussanne Estate 92 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Edna Valley

Dark yellow bordering on amber; very aromatic nose, waxy, raw almond nutty aspect, dried herbal nuance with a petrol under tone and apricot pit; full flavored, alcohol in check, very good age on this--really impressed with this bottling.

  • 2010 Château Simone Palette Rosé 90 Points

    France, Provence, Palette

Very solid darker red rose with a floral aromatic nose, good crunchy rocky minerals, and a touch of grenache red fruit. Serious, good depth, and some fine tannins to give it a little structure.

  • 2007 Aubert Pinot Noir Reuling Vineyard 91 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

Slick, smooth, ripe dark blackberry, touch of minerality with well-integrated oak; pretty toasted myself at this point and didn't take notes!

  • 2007 Friedrich Becker Kammerberg Spätburgunder 92 Points

    Germany, Pfalz

Dark ruby-pruple; Very fresh, pure roest berry fruit with a slight earthiness to it; at once juicy but with a little grip and a nice dose of clean rocky minerality. Blind I thought this could be a lighter Chinon, but just too elegant. Quite impressive. Low or no oak.
