Flight 1 - Library Releases (8 Notes)

These are all the wines that the Domaine shipped for the dinner. Each wine was paired with a different course.

  • 1999 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Bourgogne Blanc

    France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Blanc

Domaine Library Release. Opened about 2 hours before serving. A riper aromatic profile than the bottle had a couple weeks ago. Yellow citrus and mineral notes. Much richer on the palate as well. The additional time open definitely made a difference, but there was a still a pretty good amount of structure. Nice cleansing acidty. Overall showing well, but I would have liked a longer finish.

  • 1992 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Musigny Blanc

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru

Domaine Library Release. Opened 2 or 3 hours before serving. Slight golden color. Much riper on the nose and palate than the bottle had a few days ago. Waxy, ripe stone fruit with some baked yellow citrus notes. Medium weight and intensity. Lacking some of the acidity of the bottle from a few days ago. Still nice though.

Another bottle was open from a tasting earlier in the day (roughly 8 hours or so). Showing some of the same characteristics, but much riper and lush and lacking structure. Based on tonights bottles and the bottle had just the other day, I would probably open about a half hour before serving, but not much more.

  • 1993 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Chambolle-Musigny

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny

Domaine Library Release. Opened roughly 3 hours before serving, maybe 4. Very similar to the last bottle tasted. Dense black frut on the nose and palate with a savory herb quality; fresh crushed thyme leaves. A good bit of mineral structure on the palate. Fantastic texture. Lengthy finish with great acidity. Extremely impressive wine.

  • 2002 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

Domaine Library Release. Opened about 3 hours before serving. Quite similar to the other library release bottled opened about two weeks ago. Lots of structure and dark cherry and berry notes. Very concentrated with a lengthy finish.

Another library release bottled had been opened about 9 hours earlier and I got to try some of that as well. This wine, while sharing much of the same flavor profile, had much softer tannins, but by no means less concentrated. I really look forward to seeing how this develops.

  • 1997 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

Domaine Library Release. Opened about 3 hours before tasting. Very similar to the bottle tasted 5 weeks ago. Ripe red cherry and great spice notes on both the nose and palate with nice minerality too. A second bottle opened earlier in the day was tasted as well. I found this one to be more aromatic with a great mix of delicate red fruits, floral, and mineral. It showed more "Chambolle" character, though I'd be happy to drink either.

  • 1991 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Musigny Cuvée Vieilles Vignes

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru

Domaine Library Release. From Magnum that had been open about 4 hours or so. Wow. So much more structure and power than the 750ml tasted earlier in the evening. Black cherry and berry with crushed stones and a savory herb note. The same fruit on the firm palate. Huge mineral backbones to the wine with great acidity. Incredibly fresh and young! What more could you want from a magnum with this perfect provenance. I plan on saving my magnum from this same case for at least a decade before opening.

  • 1991 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Musigny Cuvée Vieilles Vignes

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru

Domaine Library Release. From 750ml that had been open for about 8 hours. Showing very mature on the nose. Dried darker red fruit and rose petals with a bit of damp earth and leaves. Nice texture on the palate, but lacking structure. Low acidity with a somewhat simple finish.

  • 2001 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Bonnes Mares

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

Domaine Library Release. Opened roughly 5 hours before serving. Powerful aromatics. Sappy, dark red/black cherry with espresso notes and some bitter chocolate. Crushed rocks. The same dark fruit on the palate with great spice. Medium plus bodied with a firm mineral backbone that is somewhat hidden by the fruit. Great intensity with a long finish. Great now, but should be fantastic with time.

Flight 2 - Additional bottles (10 Notes)

A number of us brought in some additional bottles to supplement the wines shipped in by the Domaine.
(this is not necessarily the order in which they were tasted)

  • 2002 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Bourgogne Blanc

    France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Blanc

Lemon and mineral based aromatics. Notes of white peach as well. Great density of fruit on the palate with cleansing acidity and the structure to allow for continued aging. Very fresh and vibrant. Absolutely delicious. My favorite white of the evening.

  • 1988 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Chambolle-Musigny

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny

Open for roughly 3 hours before trying. An attractive mix of red fruit and floral on the nose with some crushed stone. Firm red fruit on the palate with moderate intensity. Slightly drying on the finish. Pretty, but not great.

  • 1998 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

Opened about 3 hours before serving. From the same case as the bottle had about two weeks ago and showing very similar. Dark red cherry and berry with floral and savory herb notes. Again, great minerality and acidity with a core of sweet dark fruit. Lengthy, gripping finish. Drinking fantastic, but there is no rush.

  • 1996 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Bonnes Mares

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

Bottle was opened about 3 hours before trying. An alluring mix of black cherry and berry intermixed with mushroomy/damp earth note. Deep spice notes as well. The same black fruit is found on the dense palate which has softened up a bit since the last bottle I had (which was from the same case), but by no means have the tannins completely integrated yet. Medium/medium plus bodied, well balanced, with great acidity. Lengthy finish.

  • 1993 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Musigny Cuvée Vieilles Vignes

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru

Opened roughly 2 hours before serving. Big black fruit on the nose and palate. Savory meaty notes. Very dense and powerful on the palate with an immense amount of mineral structure. This bottle was in need of much more time to soften up.

  • 1961 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Musigny Cuvée Vieilles Vignes

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru

I think this was opened about a half hour before serving. Showing mature notes, but still very pretty. Mostly dried red fruit and floral with some earthy/mushroom notes and great spice on the nose. Some sweetness of fruit was left on the palate. Lighter bodied with nice length. A very lovely wine.

  • 1971 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Musigny Cuvée Vieilles Vignes

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru

I think this was opened roughly an hour or so before drinking, but I cannot remember exactly. Amazing aromatic depth. Dark red/black cherry and berry with damp earth notes and intense brown spice. A fantastic mix of sweet dark fruit and earth of the spice packed palate. So much intensity with more and more layers that kept unfolding. Medium body with a very long finish. Outstanding balance. Easily the wine of the night and I cannot recall a Musigny I've enjoyed more.

  • 1978 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Musigny Cuvée Vieilles Vignes Flawed

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru

Unfortunately mildly corked. Some pretty, lighter red fruits and spice came through though.

  • 1997 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Musigny Cuvée Vieilles Vignes

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru

Was open about 1 or 2 hours before tasting. Dense, ripe dark red/black cherry and berry fruit on the nose and palate. Great lushness to the wine. Showing nice acidity as well. Fantastic brown spice notes all throughout, with some cinnamon really standing out to me. Medium weight with a long finish. A really fantastic wine and one of the big surprises of the night.

  • 2008 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Musigny Cuvée Vieilles Vignes

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru

Was open roughly 5 hours before I got to try it. Beautiful bright, clear red color. Aromatically very pure and clean. A pretty mix of red cherry and berry with crushed rock and some buried spice. Quite firm on the palate. Medium body and finish. Lots of structure. I look forward to seeing how this develops and I wish I would have bought more.
