  • 1998 Il Poggione (Proprietá Franceschi) Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 86 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Dark brick browning at the rim. Evolved nose indicating overmaturity. Med-full bodied, rich, with firm tannins and overripe fruit. Balancing acidity and a long aftertaste.

Dark brick. Typical mature cabernet nose of cedar, cassis and dark cherries with a warm climate character. Full-bodied with fully resolved tannins, evolved fruit and balancing acidity. Long aftertaste. A crowd-pleaser.

  • 1999 Capannelle Solaré 94 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

WOTN to most, despite the fact that it was tasted alongside a number of Bordeaux costing twice or even three times as much. Dark garnet bricking at the rim. Stunning nose, complex and elegant with tea leaves, cherry, clove, flowers and nicely integrated animal notes. Medium-bodied, extremely smooth and perfectly round with silky tannins, nice fruit and balancing acidity. Long aftertaste. At peak.

  • 2003 Château Beausejour (Duffau Lagarrosse) 91 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Plums, dark cherry, spice and vanills on the nose. Medium-bodied and balanced with firm but juicy tannins, bright fruit given the vintage and balancing acidity. Long aftertaste. Solid and approachable with a long life ahead.

  • 1995 Château Branaire (Duluc-Ducru) 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Dark garnet. Typical nose of an aged left-banker with graphite, ink, ceddar and cassis. Medium-bodied with nice freshness given the age, soft tannins, balancing acidity and a medium+ aftertaste. Solid wine at its peak.

  • 2001 Château La Fleur-Pétrus

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

This wine seemed just a little bit corked to me, to such a degree that while it was absolutely drinkable, its true aromas were suppressed by the cork taint effect. As a result the wine seemed too shy, inexpressive and shut down with restrained aromas of liquorice, plums, vanilla and dark cherry. Nobody else agreed with me on the cork issue and we would need a second bottle to compare and decide but there wasn't any available. Very nice wine overall but not what you expect from a Lafleur-Petrus. No score officially from me though it deserved a 92 as it was.

  • 2001 Miguel Torres Cordillera Curico Valley 90 Points

    Chile, Curico Valley

Holding surprisingly well. Elegant nose of red cherry, cedar, smoke, cassis and tertiary undertones. On the palate it is medium-bodied and silky-textured, perfectly round and elegant. Aftertaste is absolutely satisfying and the wine is very versatile to pair with a vast array of dishes. An overperformer at its price point.

  • 2005 Parparoussis Reserve Nemea 89 Points

    Greece, Peloponnisos, Nemea

An old-fashioned Nemea, with a Burgundian twist in its philosophy but closer in flavor to a traditional Rioja, far from the dark-colored and overoaked monsters that certain winemakers from the region produce today. Medium garnet color. Subtle but elegant aromas of red cherry, sour cherry and currunts with nuances of sweet spice and red flowers. Medium-bodied with soft tannins, balancing acidity and a long aftertaste. Elegant. It is good that there are still winemakers producing this kind of wine, against the trend.
