Conrad Green
Tasted Sunday, December 16, 2012 by peternelson with 834 views
What another great tasting dinner at Conrad's! The food was really excellent and it's always a great way to wrap up the year. We had the following courses paired superbly with each flight:
Lobster Bisque
Crab salad with lettuce, avocado and orange
Salmon with flagelot beans in red wine sauce (Pavelot 1er cru)
Beef stew with dumplings
Stilton and cheddar brought back from England via suitcase.
2002 H. Billiot Fils Champagne Grand Cru Brut Millésimé 90 Points
France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
Sticks and stony aromas with dried spices, apple tart; medium body, medium intensity, good acidity. Solid but not in love with this. Mostly red grapes from Ambonnay, all grand cru, no malolactic. 90-91

2002 Bollinger Champagne La Grande Année 93 Points
France, Champagne
Vinous nose, creamy, great vibrancy and intensity; lemon curds, very long in the finish. Barrel fermentation apparent, with slight earthy caramel notes; this is bigger and fairly powerful. 60% PN, mostly Grand Cru fruit with a little premier cru, fermented in barrel, secondary occurs under natural cork, on the lees for 6 years; reserve wines stored in magnum under cork.

2002 Bollinger Champagne La Grande Année Rosé 94 Points
France, Champagne
Light raspberry, earth, cherry tart notes (I was going to say cherry muffin!); long rich, creamy; this was amazing balanced, elegant yet full of great rose character. One of the best I've had. Same elevage and cepage as the Grand Annee white (about 60% white PN juice), but with 32% Chardonnay, and a further 8% red (PN?) wine added (which would actually equal about 68% PN I guess.)

2002 Dom Pérignon Champagne 93 Points
France, Champagne
Light lemon, brioche, hint of tuna oil; super elegant, very creamy, airy, yet vibrant and structured. Slightly closed, but easily a great wine, even now. 93+

2002 Vilmart & Cie Champagne Premier Cru Coeur de Cuvée 94 Points
France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru
Very aromatic nose, vinous and meursault-like; pear/apple tart and pie crust; very intense and lively in the mouth and very powerful. This is not a shy wine and should be drank with caution! Huge finish, tons of flavor, lots of intensity, really amazing. 60% Chardonnay.

2002 Joh. Jos. Christoffel Erben Erdener Treppchen Riesling Auslese ** 93 Points
Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Concentrated with slate, peach, petrol; classic, pure, lots of character, with slightly low acidity for this wine and a soft silky mouthfeel.

2002 Schloss Lieser Niederberg Helden Riesling Auslese 92 Points

Clean, crisp with diesel, apply notes and a good mineral backbone; really good acidity and balance. Fits the Lieser profile which I like a lot. 92+

2002 Carl Loewen Leiwener Laurentiuslay Riesling Auslese 89 Points
Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Bruised peach and sour or slightly under ripe apricot; crushed leaves and a little cheese rind thing going on; this had an ever so slight spritz in a medium body. This seemed off, prematurely aged, or maybe just a bit funky-earthy. Not bad, but least favorite of the flight.

2002 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese 92 Points
Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Very clean with a touch of earthy slate-mineral; intense mouth, medium acidity (to slightly medium-low); this packs good structure, but is way too young. Younger JJ Prums have never brought much pleasure to me; they simply need too much time to come around I guess. That being said, they are impeccably balanced, fine and concentrated, and are intellectually intriguing.

2002 Von Schubert Maximin Grünhäuser Abtsberg Riesling Auslese Nr. 93 94 Points

Lemon curd, caramel, vibrant, zingy acidity with pure clean citrus notes; excellent acid-sweetness balanced, and a super long finish. Excellent.

2002 Domaine Robert Arnoux / Arnoux-Lachaux Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Clos des Corvees Pagets 92 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
This has a lovely open nose with light spice, elegant pinot character, a drop of sweet ripe cherry, slight cola and floral element along with a touch of metalic minerality; all components are integrating nicely without showing its 10 years. It is a bit soft and the only downside is it lacks a bit of structure. But otherwise beautiful and pleasurable.

2002 Domaine Robert Arnoux / Arnoux-Lachaux Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Chaumes 91 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
Black cherry, earthy spice, dark fruits and slight (oak) vanilla; this was big, and quite tannic and still seemed quite young; lacked elegance although I woudn't mind this with a rack of lamb or beef bourgignon.

2002 Sylvain Cathiard Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts 93 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
Bright and aromatic, cassis, gingerbread, under ripe black cherry and cinnamon; soft mouthfeel, good acidity and balance with a long finish. really nice, medium complexity, and opened up in the glass. This has a way to go too.

2002 Moillard Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts 89 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
Low nose, light cherry; quite simple, tart; drying tannins. This was my least favorite of the flight. 89-90

2002 Domaine Bertagna Vougeot 1er Cru Clos de la Perrière 91 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vougeot 1er Cru
Cherry-berry mix in the nose with licorice hints and a slight tuna fish oil thing going on(!) (although not unpleasant); good acidity, structure with silky mouthfeel; pretty good little bottle, although did not overly impress.

2002 Nicolas Potel Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Gaudichots 90 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
Dried earth and leaves, a bit tart berry fruit and earthy-stemmy; medium high acidity but with good balance and structure. Seems musty and not worthy of Grand Cru or Grand Cru adjacent. Others enjoyed this but I couldn't get over the light mustiness--could have been faulty in my opinion. Maybe 90-91 to be generous.

2002 Ramey Jericho Canyon Vineyard 92 Points
USA, California, Napa Valley
Classic old school style with bitter chocolate, black fruits, earth and minerals and a sturdy structure--not all silky and flashy (although not rustic either). I liked this and should do well for another 15-20 years.

2002 Château Climens 91 Points
France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac
Soft apricot and peach with a little botrytis; good acidity, not heavy, but does not possess the structure or elegance of stronger vintages. 100% semillon, off year shows, although 91 isn't bad.
