Introduction

It was a wine pick up day from my go to retailer with my go to salesperson who happens to be a great friend and drinking buddy. I also was meeting up with a couple dcwinos. This casued me to uncork a couple bottles in the name of science and friendship. Luckily they were fun to try and provided a good educational experience as well.

Flight 1 (2 Notes)

  • 2010 Lucien Le Moine Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Start a bit tight, sweet, floral and sappy. With air, it opens up beautifully, perfectly ripe blackberries, flower, sap, clove, stem and earth. Beautiful silky palate, very bright acidity and sweet tannins that are beautifully integrated already. The 10 displays more pronounced acidity and structure, also a bit deeper and darker fruit expression. Once again, I highly recommend this wine to those who like generous and opulent ripe fruit of Cali pinot and are exploring Burgundy. The expressive nose displays beautiful sweet ripe fruit yet it also maintains beautiful tension and vibrant energy. I don’t anticipate this wine shutting down hard but it will need at least eight to ten more years of cellaring to reach the peak.

  • 2009 Château Trotanoy 98 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Pop and pour, extremely tight and not revealing much. Nevertheless seamless silky palate and perfectly sweet tannins are very impressive. It also surprises with bright acidity. With air, blackberries, milk chocolate, lead pencil/minerality, mint, cedar, vanilla and earth. Despite a hint of ripe fruit, the overall impression is fresh and vibrant. What is perfect at this stage is the palate which is silky, airy, seamless, cool, mineral and bright. This is where the context matters as I am not entire sure whether this would have not gotten lost if tasted blind. Absolutely stunning effort. 92 point nose, 100 point palate, 96-100 point potential. It will need at least ten years to open up and will improve for at least 30+ years.
