Flight 1 (10 Notes)

  • 2009 Sanguis Lotus of Siam 89 Points

    USA, California, Central Coast

nose: Fat and rich nose with tones of lemon peels, white fruits, marshmallow, star fruits and oils. Decent depth and on the more forward side.

taste: Full bodied and a bit flabby. It's lacking some acidity with big and rich tones of lemon peels, white fruits, pears, and some oil tones.

overall: This was a solid white. There was good complexity, but it was lacking some depth and acidity to it that would've made it better.

  • 2001 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape 92 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

nose: Nice and savory nose with really good tones of licorice, black cherries, garrigue, raspberries, and kirsch. There is good depth to this as well.

taste: Medium/full bodied with some chewy tannins. The structure is a bit imposing on this bottle right now, but has really good and savory tones of licorice, black cherries, garrigue and raspberries.

overall: This bottle is still very much on the young side. It was pretty open on the nose, but the structure on the palate is a bit much. This still needs some time to fully show what it has.

  • 2001 Domaine de Beaurenard (Paul Coulon et Fils) Châteauneuf-du-Pape Boisrenard 90 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

nose: There is a noticeable dose of oak right off the bat along with tones of licorice, cherries, currants, spice tones and black fruits. There is decent depth to it, but the oak is a bit annoying.

taste: Medium/full bodied with some grippy tannins. On the bigger side with tones of oak, black fruits, currants, spices and dark cherries.

overall: This was on the younger side. It can use some time to fully come together and hopefully have the oak absorb some more.

  • 2001 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée 94 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

nose: This leads off with a nice bit of funk along with savory tones of black fruits, roasted meats, garrigue, mesquite, and black cherries.

taste: Medium/full bodied with big and chewy tannins right now. Well balanced with real good depth and tones of funk, roasted meats, black fruits, mesquite, and some black cherries.

overall: This was a classic Pegau in all it's fun. It is still a young wine and comes off as a marathon runner. Still, there is a lot to like right now and it could be amazing with more age.

  • 2001 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Laurence 95 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

nose: Very intense nose packed with tones of dark red fruits, black cherries, red licorice, incense, black fruits and spice tones. Very good depth to this as well.

taste: Full bodied with big and chewy tannins. There is really big structure to this right now with deep tones of dark red fruits, black cherries, red licorice, leather and incense tones as well.

overall: This is a great young Pegau right now and it can get better. The structure seems to be holding the palate back a bit right now. Still, this was a tremendous wine.

  • 2001 Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Crau 91 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

nose: Nice and balanced nose of black fruits, spice tones, funk, mesquite, black cherries and some leather tones. Nice complexity, but it's lacking some depth.

taste: Medium/full bodied with grippy tannins. A bit young on the palate but with very good tones of black fruits, spice tones, leather, kirsch and black cherries.

overall: This is on the young side and it was hard to get a full read on it. While it was drinking, it did have a bit of a dumb quality to it right now.

  • 2001 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape 95 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

nose: Deep and savory nose with flowing tones of black fruits, garrigue, liqueur tones, violets, and black cherries. This is very classy and balanced as well with a seamless quality to it.

taste: Medium/full bodied with very good and sneaky tannins. There is medium acidity to it along with polished and silky tones of black fruits, garrigue, liqueur tones, and black cherries.

overall: This was a wonderful young Clos des Papes. Had a lot of polish and class with good depth on both the nose and palate. It can still go a long way, but one wouldn't be faulted for opening it now.

nose: Shows off the Pinot Noir with tones of cherries, roses, citrus tones, lemon zest and some various florals. There is nice depth to it with a precision at the same time.

taste: Medium bodied with medium/high acidity. The acidity is pretty noticeable but it isn't domineering. There are very good and precise tones of cherries, roses, floral tones, and lemon zest.

overall: This is a young champagne that could be very nice in a couple of years. There is a linear and precise quality to it that is very attractive.
