Introduction

Went out to dinner with a few other couples last night. It was a casual evening but we opened some nice bottles.

Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • 2009 Rhys Chardonnay Horseshoe Vineyard 95 Points

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

Wow. i think everyone commented how good this was. especially those who didn't really like Chardonnay. Light gold in color, some green. The nose is awesome with vanilla, lime, grapefruit and minerals. On the palate, this is smooth, and already complex if tightly would. I am sure it will make old bones, but this was fantastic last night. Not cheap, but really worth it. Infact, we drank two bottles.

  • 2006 Hartford / Hartford Court Pinot Noir Land's Edge Vineyards 90 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

This was a bit divisive. It is a very feminine, earthy Pinot. Pale ruby in color. I loved the nose, earthy funk with some candied and fresh cherries. On the palate, this is demure and perhaps lacking for some. I found it delicious and welcome.

  • 2008 Nickel & Nickel Cabernet Sauvignon Dragonfly 91 Points

USA, California, Napa Valley, St. Helena

This was pop and poured. Really in a nice place although still on the young side. A nose of cassis, fresh cut lumber, a bit of graphite. Smooth. This is not a hug wine, but there is plenty of stuffing in there. Nice balance. Got better all night.

  • 2007 Rhys Pinot Noir Horseshoe Vineyard

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

This was opened, pop and poured later in the evening. It was shut down very tight. Nice cherry fruit. Great texture, but just not really giving much up. I am holding my remaining bottles for a while. Seemed like a lot going on under the surface, but just couldn't penetrate. Hold.

  • 2004 Quinta do Vale Meão Douro Meandro 88 Points

    Portugal, Douro

This was nice. Purple in color. The nose is a bit dusty with plums and dark cherries. On the palate, lots of acidity. Worked well with the food. My first time trying, but seemed slightly past prime, but hard to tell. I would drink up based on this bottle.
