As I tasted through these wines, I was seized by the thought that the Languedoc is where the Rhone was 30 years ago. The wines are interesting, full of character, and an utter crap shoot due to the amazing array of winemaking flaws you can find in so many of them.
2012 Moulin de Gassac Guilhem Rosé
France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Vin de Pays de l'Hérault
Medium pink. Melon rind aromatics. Medium weight with some glycerine. Good watermelon fruit, nice acidity and surprising tannic grip at the end. Exceptional value for less than $10.

2011 Château Fontanès Cabernet Sauvignon les traverses de Fontanes
France, Languedoc Roussillon, Vin de Pays d'Oc
Purple center. Forward nose of herbs and licorice. Clean, bright, medium weight. Black more than red fruited, a good twist of acidity at the end. Excellent value, completely drinkable now.

2009 Domaine de Fontsainte Corbières Reserve la Demoiselle
France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Corbières
Medium ruby core, lighter edge. Significant funk dominates the aromatics. Lighter weight but still harmonious feel. Driven by leathery, earthy palate and finish. Despite it being less than pristine, this is a good, rustic country French wine now, but I would not take a chance holding onto it because of the high dose of brett.

NV Locations F-1
France
Medium color, tawny rim. Very fruity aromatics with candied cherry. Silky if somewhat liqueur-like entry, chocolatey finish. Very ripe, a tad of brett, full sweet feel with just a hint of herbs on the finish. Leaves a simple impression, but not bad and lots of stuffing. This will be your wine if you are seeking California in the Languedoc.

2008 Domaine Léon Barral Faugères
France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Faugères
Medium red. All mint, herbs and earth. Elegant weight with some underlying sweet fruit, but this sits behind some volatile acidity and a strong vein of soil. Prickly, short finish. This one has a host of winemaking flaws just waiting to explode in the bottle.

2008 Clos Lalfert Vin de France
France, Vin de France
Medium color. Ooh, does this stink-garlic and some brett. Not bad upfront, with a smooth, medium weight entry, some nice boysenberry fruit and herbs, but then the finish is dry and harsh. Another adventure.
