Introduction

This wine dinner featured the wines of Hugel et Fils hosted by Jean-Frederic Hugel (13th generation). A nice selection of library wines were poured and paired with an exquisite menu prepared by Ex. Chef Russell Klein.

  • 2011 Hugel Gentil "Hugel" 88 Points

    France, Alsace

    Pale green-gold color. PNP, drank 2 glasses over 45 minutes. This has a pretty nice nose, particularly as it comes to room temp. Much more pungent floral aromatics, citrus, mineral, grapefruit, lemon. The palate is light, lime, grapefruit, a bit of melon, mineral. Nicely balanced.

  • 2009 Hugel Pinot Blanc Cuvée les Amours 87 Points

    France, Alsace

    Pale straw color. PNP, drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. This was pretty basic and simple. Balanced and clean and pleasant showing light minerals, citrus elements, some florals as warmed up. The palate is light, acid, citrus, simple. Short finish. 86+ to 87pts.

  • 2006 Hugel Pinot Gris "Hugel" 90 Points

    France, Alsace

    Medium gold color. PNP, drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. This was a very nice wine, beautiful earth notes on the nose, forest floor, mushrooms, floral, creme brule, toasted, citrus and some stone fruits. The palate is tangy, light-medium bodied, energetic, nice texture, minerals, citrus, pear, a touch of spice, long finish. 90+pts.

  • 2005 Hugel Riesling Jubilee 89 Points

    France, Alsace

    Light gold color. PNP, drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. Nose has a prominent and pleasant petrol note that softens but persists, lemon, lemon oil, vanilla, orange peel. The palate tangy, nice acid, light, citrus, orange, fairly viscous, tangerine, mineral. Fairly long and tangy finish. 89+pts.

  • 1997 Hugel Gewurztraminer Sélection de Grains Nobles 93 Points

    France, Alsace

    Deep golden-amber color. PNP, drank 1 glass over 30+ minutes. This was the Selection de Grains R bottling at 103 gm RS. Aromatic nose with lychee, bright florals, honeysuckle, apricot, some pear, quince, spice, orange marmalade. The palate is delightful with good viscosity, deep fruit layers of apricot and orange preserves, tangy, lifted. Clean and energetic with impeccable balance, and a very long botrytis filled finish. 93+pts.

Closing

The highlights were certainly the 2006 Pinot Gris which was delightfully good and the stellar 1997 Gewurztraminer "Selection de Grains Nobles" R which was the runaway WOTN.
