Introduction

This tasting was organized by Wine Twits (@WineTwits). They coordinated three QPR-focused wines and hosted a live Twitter tasting. I had a good time connecting with some folks, even though I'm new to this tweeting stuff. Cheers!

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 2012 Wente Vineyards Chardonnay Morning Fog Livermore Valley 87 Points

USA, California, San Francisco Bay, Livermore Valley

Some pineapple and butter on the nose, but there’s also a nice mix of zesty citrus. Richly textured, this Chardonnay shows pear and yellow apple fruit with a creamy twist. Some toasted almond and biscuit notes, but this isn’t you’re oak grenade Chardonnay. A note of mineral lingers with orange peel on the finish. Overall, it’s nicely balanced but it packs some complex flavors together. Fermented 50/50 in French oak and stainless steel. $13.

  • 2011 Garnet Pinot Noir Monterey County Pinot Noir 86 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Monterey County

A medium purple color. Really ripe and boastful on the nose, with candied raspberries and cherries, some roasted coffee. Juicy on the palate with light tannins and medium acid. The cherry and red plum flavors are jammy and ripe. Secondary flavors of cedar and tobacco. Aged 11 months in 60% new French oak. Good stuff for $15.

  • 2010 Renwood Zinfandel Premier Old Vine 86 Points

USA, California, Sierra Foothills, Amador County

Bright ruby-purple. On the nose, this wine explodes with blackberry, raspberry, mocha and pipe tobacco. On the palate, again, this Zin explodes. Juicy blackberry, tons of fig paste, raisins, caramel, mocha, toast. An unashamedly burly wine. $20. Includes dashes of Syrah and Souzao.
