Introduction

A fun dinner gathering with a group of wine fanatics, tasting the young and delicious Barolo wines, plus the splendidly prepared Italian cuisine by Chef Marco.

Appetizer
Lamb capaccio with micro salad, shaved pecorino cheese and truffle dressing (this is indescribably tasty and a fabulous kick off of the dinner)

Pasta
Slow braised beef cheek tortelli tossed in brown butter (juicy and tender, excellently made, wanted to steal another piece from the plate next to me)

Main course
Slow cook 52 hours beef short rib with roast potato and vegetable (this is not an easy dish, and you can tell the technique and patience required of the chef, exquisite, always speechless)
Slow cooked Italian red snapper with crab and French bean salad, served with sea urchin emulsion (never thought a fish dish could go well with the reds, special indeed)

Dessert
Sicilian cannoli stuffed with ricotta cheese and candied citrus

    Italy, Marche, Verdicchio di Matelica

A lovely italian white. Fresh, pure, light. Palate is on the dry side yet creamy, with fresh green fruits and bitterness that's refreshing and distinctive. Good length in the finish, with after taste of green apple, white flowers and hint of oak.

Aromatics of perfume, minerality, vanilla and sweet fruits. Ripe red fruits, rustic, earth on the palate, dense, lush mouth feel. Brilliant match to the beef cheek tortelli.

  • 2008 Azienda Bricco Rocche (Ceretto) Barolo Prapò 91 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Primary, tannic and masculine are the most apparent characters for this wine right now. However, it's been said that this Barolo wine is more modern in style comparing to other Barolos, and it's kinda true, black fruits, jam, candied cherry and licorice come forward in the aroma. Palate is more powerful than other bottles at the dinner table, with fresh fruits and hint of tobacco smoke. A quality young wine and goes very well with the beef short rib, yet should be kept in the cellar for further development.

  • 2008 Bartolo Mascarello Barolo 93 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

This wonderful Barolo is all elegance and finesse. Beautifully structured, smooth, plush, and it's still so young. Floral, cream, damp earth, red fruit are not too hard to find. But the soft, silky, feminine touch on the palate is simply brilliant. With more cellar time, this wine is going to rock.

  • 2008 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Cascina Francia 94 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Enticing aromatics filled with roses, fresh cut grass and red fruits. Fabulously structured, with solid, dense taste notes of stone, red fruits, yet the touches on palate is breath taking, elegant, plush, smooth. Tannins are prominent but superbly refined and tasty. WOTN for me, you can't get enough of it. And it will only get better and better with time!

  • 2010 Château Guiraud 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Very young, lightly colored. Notes of white flower, honey, orange peel, citrus on the nose and palate. Light in weight and not too sweet. The wine by itself is rather thin and simple, but matching pretty well with the cannoli at the dinner.

Closing

A truly enjoyable dinner, good food, good wine, and most importantly, a good bunch of silly lovely wine fanatics. Big round of applause to Chef Marco for the fantastic dishes.

Of course, the night didn't end just that, and thanks to Samson for providing us with some more special treats of Quinta do Crasto Port wine, Yoichi 12-year whisky, and Newport vodka =)
