Introduction

This was a quickie, so to speak, with a small group of three of us gathering to enjoy a pre-Thanksgiving wine-lebration. It turned out to be a great format as each of the wines were difficult to put down and the opportunity for additional pours was appreciated.

Flight 1 (4 Notes)

  • NV Charles Ellner Champagne Grande Réserve Brut 91 Points

    France, Champagne

Light-medium gold color. This was the last bottle of this set from 3 years ago and it is drinking really well. Oodles of very fine streaming bubbles. The nose is yeasty, pear, citrus. The palate is elegant and bright with yeast, toast, lemon, citrus, pear, mineral, and a medium plus finish.

  • 2007 Ken Wright Pinot Noir Shea Vineyard 93 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Yamhill-Carlton

Dark red color. PNP, drank 2+ glasses over 2+ hours. I'm surprised to see no one has posted on this wine in almost a year. This wine is really shining right now. The nose is wonderful with a lovely floral perfume, cherries, raspberry, subtle earth, cinnamon, and fine spices. The palate is medium bodied, very elegant with velvety, dusty tannins, nice red fruits, cherry and berries, spice, and a long finish. Impeccably balanced and showing the beauty of the vintage. Very pretty.

  • 1994 Château Certan de May 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Very dark red color with a 3mm meniscus of bricking. PNP, followed 2+ glasses over 3 hours. This was a pristine bottle of gorgeous mature juice. The nose offered up an attractive perfume of earth, mushroom, red berries, and leather that further evolves to reveal notes of blueberry, black currant, and licorice. There was a nice tobacco note on opening that did not seem to persist. The palate is medium bodied, mature and elegant with fully resolved tannins, earth, leather, berry, currants, bright cherry, tar and licorice followed by a long finish. This was a delightful, complex wine that like a chameleon, kept changing to reveal more and more layers. I suspect well stored bottles can last for the short term of a couple of years pretty safely. 93+pts.

  • 2004 Château Pontet-Canet 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Very dark red/purple color. This had a total of 2.5hrs in decanter. Drank 2+ glasses over 2+ hours. This definitely benefited from the decant and continued to open in the glass. A nice nose that while somewhat primary, already reveals much of what is to come. A sweet perfume of roses and violets wafts from the glass, along with cassis, cedar planks, spice, sandalwood, and earth. The palate has excellent structure and balance, full bodied, cassis, black cherry, cedar, spice, graphite, and subtle oak. This finishes long as well. This is just at the start of the drinking window and I expect this to take on even more finesse over the next 5-10 years. 92+(+)pts.

Closing

WOTN was unanimously the 1994 Chateau Certan de May. A somewhat surprising showing and hopefully not just an aberration!
