Flight 1 (15 Notes)

  • 2007 M. Chapoutier Condrieu Invitare

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Condrieu

Yellow core with straw rim; kumquat, tangerine oil, floral though nose is more subtle than expected, honey, lily, beeswax, almost lanolin, melon; medium richness though watery at first, some honey, bitter melon, and tangerine on the well defined finish; nose and palate got better with air and as they warmed; everyone says drink Condrieu within 2 years of release but this was fine though maybe not as exuberant as it was in its youth.

  • 2004 M. Chapoutier Ermitage Les Greffieux

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

Dull dark core with dull red ruby edge; funk galore, smoked meat, plum, dark berry, pepper, black olive, leather; good fruit, less green than I expected, almost black currant, ripe with good acid, still some ashy tannin, tart berry deep, rich, Burgundian but clearly Rhone, gamey; good but a bit heavy; did not scream its nobility.

  • 2009 Saint Cosme Côte-Rôtie

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Deep blackish purple core with light purple rim; slight candy, black pepper, perfumed, violets, sexy, peppered beef, fresh, smells delicious, pre-tapenade; very fresh and tasty, sexy though there is a slight heaviness probably from Louis' use of the whole cluster; nailed it.

  • 2003 Fattoria Galardi Terra di Lavoro

    Italy, Campania, Roccamonfina IGT

Black almost to rim, cloudy dull crimson rim; bitter chocolate, tobacco, ash, sandalwood, fennel, dark cherry, and menthol; dense dark and rich, powerful but resolving tannins, anis licorice, brooding; good; Roccamonfina was my backup call behind Montevetrano.

  • 2008 Peter Michael Pinot Noir Le Moulin Rouge

USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Lucia Highlands

Opaque core with light red rim; dark cherry, liqueur, cinnamon, plum; slight candy, sweet, cherry, soft, dense, heavy, too rich, cola, wild berry, warming finish; not a fan of this "Pinot"; should have gone SLH on the domestic Pinot call.

  • 2002 La Pousse d'Or Volnay 1er Cru Clos de la Bousse d'Or

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

Dark crimson core with large rusty crimson rim, looks aged; sour cherry, earth, diaper, leather; sour cherry, sappy and sweet, cherry pit; still very primary on the palate; called it.

  • 2010 Maison Bertrand Ambroise Corton-Le Rognet

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru

Pretty, light violet rim with darker semi-translucent core; candied but really tart nose of wild berries and dark cherry, still reductive, white rock is buried underneath; candied watermelon, grape Jolly Rancher, really fresh, acidic, darker profile with a slightly leaner frame; absolutely delicious!

  • 1994 Château Léoville Las Cases

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Dark core with 1/4" bricking; tobacco, leather, gravel, aged, cheesy, cigar, red currant, sandy, Bordeaux; cigar, good richness, leather, classic Claret, no lead pencil; this bottle is near its peak, will have to drink mine soon.

  • 2010 Joseph Drouhin Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches Rouge

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

Very translucent crimson to rim; confected red fruit, high toned, watermelon, cherry; slightly bitter with its minerality, good bit of tannin at this stage, good nobility; delicious.

  • 2005 Massolino Barolo Riserva Vigna Rionda

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Dark red showing good clarity; dried red cherry, roses, orange oil, sweet wood, cedar almost sandalwood, very elegant; slight bitterness on palate, not very tannic, distinct nobility, deep and rich, softer for Nebbiolo but that is probably the vintage; tasty in an elegant style that I really enjoy.

  • 2001 McKenzie-Mueller Cabernet Sauvignon

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Opaque core with red rim; blackcurrant, red currant, anise, some boxwood, lead pencil, not earthy though*; classic Cabernet Sauvignon, Bordeaux-like; delicious; everyone really enjoyed this and may have been our WOTN; more open and ready than the last bottle.

  • 2007 Vietti Barolo Lazzarito

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Semi-translucent dark crimson core with copper rim; classic Barolo nose, red cherry, roses, menthol, tar, lighter and elegant, very floral; softer tannin, red cherry, cinnamon, pretty, chestnut; possibly my favorite wine of the evening; young and lots of potential but this drinks impeccably now.

  • 2009 Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Crau

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Dark core with lighter red rim, good clarity; brilliant nose of old school CdP, fig, aspirin, tart red fruit, blood orange, beautiful, autumnal, pomegranate; tart, cranberry, round, good sweetness in the middle, bitter finish; amazing balance; delicious.

  • 2002 Château Lynch-Bages

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Dark core with thin crimson rim; ripe, rich, cigar, some vanilla, strong pyrazine; rich and luxurious palate, coffee, cigar, green pepper, high acid, but a wall of tannin; good but not ready yet, give another 5 years.

Closing

A really nice lineup. Hard to be objective because some of the wines were just not satisfying to me this evening even though I appreciated them (Burgs and Bordeaux).

My Top 5:
1- Vietti Lazzarito
2- McKenzie-Mueller Cabernet
3- Massolino Vigna Rionda
4- Vieux Telegraphe
5- St. Cosme Cote Rotie
