Introduction

Bottles were bought from Vinothek Wein und Wachau. The bottles were stored for a week before the tasting to settle down. Bottles opened and tried before the tasting. The corks were fine. 4 different flights, each for every vintage. Starting from the 2004 vintage and going back.

Flight 1 - Vintage 2004 (2 Notes)

  • 2004 Weingut Willi Bründlmayer Riesling Lyra Zöbinger Heiligenstein 90 Points

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Kamptal

Medium + intensity, clearly defined, laser-cut aromas, light petrol notes with citrus and spicy (white pepper ?) notes underneath. Youthful
Dry, medium+ intensity, medium+ body, medium+ acidity, citrus notes, filled with nerve, bright clear tropical fruit like pineapple and a long aftertaste.
Outstanding quality, drinking now but can definately age more.

  • 2004 Weingut Willi Bründlmayer Riesling Zöbinger Heiligenstein 88 Points

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Kamptal

The nose is of medium intensity, subtle and round, filled with white flesh ripe fruits, buttery hints. Youthful
Dry in the mouth, medium+ body, with medium/medium+ intensity, medium +/high acidity, it has more nerve in the mouth when compared to the nose, citrus flavors, mineral and almost salty, with an alcohol bite in the end and a medium to long aftertaste.
Very good quality, drinking now but can definately hold.

Flight 2 - Vintage 2003 (2 Notes)

  • 2003 Weingut Willi Bründlmayer Riesling Zöbinger Heiligenstein 89 Points

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Kamptal

Medium intensity in the nose with ripe apple and pear notes, a few hints of caramel layed over a thin buttery coat. On the developing side.
It feels off-dry, medium+ body, with a medium intensity, round, a medium+/high acidity that creates a nice balance throughout, over-ripe apple and pear flavors following the medium+ aftertaste.
Very good quality, drinking now but can easily hold for more.

  • 2003 Weingut Willi Bründlmayer Riesling Lyra Zöbinger Heiligenstein 92 Points

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Kamptal

Medium/medium+ intensity in the aromas, light petrol, citrus and tropical notes. Even though it actually has the same character as the 2004, this is more pronounced and better expressed. Youthful.
Borderline off dry (like the Alte Reben 2003),medium+/full body, balancing medium+ acidity with crystal clear citrus notes, still having green notes offering freshness rather than underripe character, big and intense, medium to long aftertaste.
Outstanding quality, drinking now with immense pleasure but could definately hold more. Wine of the whole night for me.

Flight 3 - Vintage 2002 (2 Notes)

  • 2002 Weingut Willi Bründlmayer Riesling Zöbinger Heiligenstein 90 Points

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Kamptal

Medium+ intensity for the nose, ethereal balance with ripe apricot, apple and grape-y notes dancing with creamy shoes. Developing
Dry-ish or borderling off dry, medium+/full body, medium+ acidity filled with nerve and intensity, still giving green notes, acidity comes after a while, ending with an impressive long aftertaste.
Outstanding quality, drinking now but could hold.

  • 2002 Weingut Willi Bründlmayer Riesling Lyra Zöbinger Heiligenstein 88 Points

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Kamptal

Medium intensity in the nose, subtle expression of ripe tropical fruit, that sits on the developing side.
Dry, medium acidity, medium body, balanced and round, every component and white fruit in the same level, ends with a short aftertaste. It feels like lacking the wow factor of the Lyra label.
Very good quality, drinking better now than later. It was the underperforming player of the Lyra team or the Alte Reben 2002 was just too good.

Flight 4 - Vintage 2001 (2 Notes)

  • 2001 Weingut Willi Bründlmayer Riesling Zöbinger Heiligenstein 88 Points

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Kamptal

Deep color in this one, with full sweet nose of medium+ intensity, filled with honey, over-ripe apricot (noble rot maybe?) red apple, melon and pear marmelade. Fully developed.
Dry, medium- body, with medium+ acidity, but medium-/medium intensity that comes through as thin concentration lacking balance, subdued fruit and short aftertaste. The acidity just shows too much here.
Very good quality considering the age, fully developed and clearly going in an oxidative phase but doing so with an amazing grace.

  • 2001 Weingut Willi Bründlmayer Riesling Lyra Zöbinger Heiligenstein 90 Points

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Kamptal

Deep color like the Alte Reben 2001, complex character with spicy notes alongside lychee, crystallized koum kouat, over-ripe green apple with a few smoke/toast and caramel notes. Fully developed
Dry, medium+ acidity, medium+/full body, balanced, with toast-y notes and apple leading the way through a long spicy aftertaste.
Oustanding quality, considering the age better to drink now than later while it still has the acidity to support the fruit. Performing better than the Alte Reben 2001, but still an impressive difference to the 2002.
