Flight 1 (10 Notes)

  • 2004 Domaine / Maison Vincent Girardin Bâtard-Montrachet 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru

Lush and fat combination of stone and orchard fruit. Seemingly very ripe with good spice support, new oak very nicely integrated. Very forward and Batard in character. Very good now.

  • 2004 Domaine / Maison Vincent Girardin Corton-Charlemagne Quintessence Flawed

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

Far more advanced than the last time I tried this in 2012. Still showed lush stone fruit with some buttery hints and fat character. But this seemed at least 5 years older than an '04. 89 or 90 points tonight.

  • 1973 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru

Good color and fill, cork was 1/2 cm depressed and fell into the bottle in the course of attempting its removal. Sensational aromas of sweet baking spice with lingering red fruit just behind well cooked mushrooms. Very pristine flavors were surprisingly fresh for the vintage, with forest/mushroom character slightly more prominent vs remaining fruit, all with classically Vosne spice. Staying very good for several hours.

  • 1994 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru

Very attractive aromatic start with forward red fruit and great spicebox combination that is classically Vosne, and very La Tâche. Started similarly on palate, a bit more austere, but ended with a slightly bitter element that didn't dissipate over several hours in glass and probably will never fully go away.

  • 1965 Marey-Monge Romanée St. Vivant 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru

I thought I would bring this along since we were going to enjoy a '73 LT, even though this came from the vintage before DRC took over farming Marey-Monge's RSV holdings. Fill level and color were very good. Started with enticing spice and earthy aromas and elegant flavors. After 15-20 minutes this became less interesting with acidity becoming more pronounced, but earth and spice re-emerged ad this seemed to pick up weight and length 45 minutes after opened, and stayed interesting for almost 2 hours.

  • 1988 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Musigny Cuvée Vieilles Vignes 86 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru

Tasted blind alongside Jadot 1988 Musigny, this came across as age appropriate for an '88 and structurally like many of the 1988s that haven't integrated perfectly. A bit rough and coarse, showing much more structure and sharp elbows than I would want.

  • 1988 Louis Jadot Musigny 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru

Tasted blind alongside Vogue 1988 Musigny, this was so far superior to its flight-mate. Assertive and powerful red and black fruit aromas and flavors with intense concentration and subtle, back ground spice. Great balance, great length. My Wine of the Night (for most others as well).

Seemed much younger than an '88, I thought it from the 90s and incorrectly thought the structural strength coming from the 1988 vintage was perhaps coming from Gevrey-Chambertin terroir, thinking this probably from Chambertin-Clos de Beze. Oops.

  • 1990 Joseph Drouhin Griotte-Chambertin 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru

Mostly red fruit, still very fresh, with a softness and subtlety uncommon for 1990s. Very good structure and textures, this should last and drink well for a long time.

  • 1990 Louis Jadot Chapelle-Chambertin 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru

Lots of power, showing good combination of ripe and mature black fruit with evolutionary development, but not as nuanced as I might expect. Still good flavors and density.

  • 1996 Frederic Esmonin Griotte-Chambertin 85 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru

Good black fruit but certainly one-dimensional in the context of this flight. Slightly bitter on finish. Oh well.
