Introduction

Elian da Ros of Marmandais, who is putting this region on the map, was visiting E&R for a lovely tasting of his wines. Across the board, this is a very consistent, delicious lineup and generally offers fantastic value for the dollar. Definitely a winery to watch, and with the older wines in the lineup, these certainly prove there's some longevity in them.

Flight 1 (11 Notes)

  • 2011 Elian Da Ros Abouriou Côtes du Marmandais 88 Points

France, Southwest France, Côtes du Marmandais

Slightly funky, with some brettiness. Some dark fruit, but overall it's the funk that's dominant. Pretty lean on the palate, but soft textually, with nice soft fruit. Pretty light on its feet. Nice leanness on thee finish, with pretty fruit and still that slight funk.

  • 2011 Elian Da Ros Côtes du Marmandais Le vin est une fête 89 Points

France, Southwest France, Côtes du Marmandais

Carbonic maceration but then aged for 14 months in large old barrels. Pretty soft aromas, which are lean and a little funky, with some bright fresh leaf aromas. Soft on palate entry, and pretty light in flavor all the way throughout, with some earthy candied fruits coming in. As if you had an earthy Starburst candy flavor, "forest floor strawberry." Nice acid dial up on the finish, with slightly dirty fruit. Nice.

  • 2011 Elian Da Ros Côtes du Marmandais le vignoble d'élian 89 Points

France, Southwest France, Côtes du Marmandais

Probably the best QPR of the lineup. Nice aromas, with some funk, but tons of ripeness to balance that out in a smooth, interesting dance. Very soft and smooth on the palate, with delicious red fruits throughout with that nice balance of slight funk. Really fresh acid on the finish, with nice balance of tannins. I really appreciate the earthy juiciness here. 89+

  • 2008 Elian Da Ros Côtes du Marmandais Chante Coucou 90 Points

France, Southwest France, Côtes du Marmandais

Smooth and really fresh aromas. Zippy acid is smelled, with nice reed fruits and slightly funky. Very impressive textural aromas. Voluptuous in the mouth, with lovely balance of acid and pleasing mellow red fruits. Impressive texture. All this follows through to a finish that's just "yummy." Very pleasing, old world fruit throughout this beauty.

  • 2009 Elian Da Ros Côtes du Marmandais Clos Baquey 89 Points

France, Southwest France, Côtes du Marmandais

Nice aromas, some funk, with good textural depth. Some darkly colored leafs. The palate has a nice soft entry, with nice tartness balancing an overall mellow impression. Tart finish with mild tannins and that acidic burn follows deep into the finish. Nice.

  • 2005 Elian Da Ros Côtes du Marmandais Chante Coucou 91 Points

France, Southwest France, Côtes du Marmandais

This bottle was hand carried on the plane by the man himself. Unfortunately unavailable, as it was my favorite. The first note on the nose is brett, but the lightest, most pleasing sort. This molds into a beautiful soft forest floor and slight red fruit aromas. Beautiful. Really awesome palate entry, with beautiful fruit. So lovely! Nice tannic grip still, but overall the impression is one of elegance. Very nice finish, and drinking beautifully today. It has plenty of life ahead of it, but I wouldn't hesitate to drink these now as they're in a beautiful spot.

  • 2004 Elian Da Ros Côtes du Marmandais Clos Baquey 90 Points

France, Southwest France, Côtes du Marmandais

Another one brought on the plane. The aromas are soft and pretty, but quite tight. Really nice soft palate entry, but quite gritty and tannic after just a few moments. There's a good evolution on the palate though, getting to dark candied fruit mixed with some green herbs. Tons of life left in this one. Grippy and gritty tannins on the finish, though this is interestingly balanced by a soft textural notion. Pretty tight though, overall.

  • 2009 Elian Da Ros Côtes du Marmandais Rosé Chante Coucou Rosé 86 Points

France, Southwest France, Côtes du Marmandais

Incredibly exuberant aromas. Very lovely strawberry fruit on initial sniff. The palate is quite zippy with some odd, unexpected flavors after that initial exuberant impression on the nose. I find the palate a bit darker in profile than expected. Again, some dark berries on the finish (odd for a Rosé), coupled with some funk. I get some metallic notes too, which I generally don't appreciate in Rosé. An interesting wine, and after a few sips the aromas were now also coming across a bit more funky to me.

  • 2009 Elian Da Ros Coucou Blanc 88 Points

France, Southwest France, Côtes du Marmandais

A blend of Sauvignon blanc and Semillon. Really lovely aromas, with nice depth of pineapple, acid, tartness, and honeydew melon. Some tomato can on the palate, with an odd star fruit flavor and funky melon. Weird. More slightly funk notes on the finish, coupled with the metallic notes. Spicy and tart. Interesting stuff.

  • 2008 Elian Da Ros Vin de Table Français Sua Sponte 89 Points

    France, Vin de Table Français

This is 30% Sauvignon Blanc, 70% Semillon, only made in special vintages where the weather cooperates. This particular landed at 30-50% botrytised clusters, and made in a demi-sec style around 10g/liter sugar and 14%+ alcohol. All that comes across throughout this wine, as its aromas are quite thick and large, with rich zippy acidity coming through. Feels like it will be large on the palate, and it is. Thick and heavy body, with rich texture and some flavors of rubber cement. Pretty high octane stuff. Feels chunky with in-mouth aeration. Very big and rich on the finish, with thick and creamy notions lingering on the long, deep finish. Very long, in fact. Pretty heavy duty stuff.

  • 2005 Elian Da Ros Coucou Blanc 86 Points

France, Southwest France, Côtes du Marmandais

This wine was semi-sweet in 2005. It smells a little funky, though also rich, offering some minerals and metallic notes. Very soft on the palate, with some sweet funky metallic apple core. It's really like eating the core of the apple, seeds, cyanide and all. Tart and acidic finish, which is pretty rich. Soft with nice acid, but more metallic notes that make me find this not too compelling.
