Introduction

Great little mini with four of us. No particular theme. Wines were poured and then revisited after about 2 hours.

Flight 2 (1 Note)

  • 2009 Shea Wine Cellars Pinot Noir Estate Shea Vineyard 93 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

Medium red color. Double decanted for 1 hour. Drank two 3 oz glasses over 4 hours. I really enjoyed the nose on this, strawberry, cinnamon, dry earth, briar, cherry, and a riveting brown sugar note that evolves over 30 minutes. The palate is bright and elegant, very difficult to put this down, cherry cobbler, strawberry, briary, light-medium body, vanillin, nice spices, long finish. Loved the overall balance and elegance of this wine. This may improve some and should hold for 5 years plus. 93+(+)pts.

Flight 3 (3 Notes)

  • 1996 Château Léoville Barton 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Very dark red-purple color, slightly cloudy with a 1 mm bricked meniscus. Decanted for 2.5hrs, drank two 3oz pours over 4 hours. Fantastic nose, NOTN, earthy, funky, horse, saddle leather, perfumed, floral, cassis, blueberry. The palate is a little leaner, slightly austere up front, but it takes on some weight and rounds further over another hour. The palate shows plenty of damp earthiness, leather, cherry, cassis, dark raspberry, graphite, medium-full bodied, smooth with medium grained tannins that are integrating, long finish. This wine is still relatively young and just coming into prime drinking. A generous decant is suggested. If the palate rounds out further this could be even better. 93+(+)pts.

  • 1998 Château Smith Haut Lafitte 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Very dark red-purple color, clear 1mm meniscus. 4hr decant, drank two 3oz pours over 4 hours. Another solid nose, earthy, graphite, tar, dark fruits, wood, fragrant, leather, later there is a really nice sweet floral essence. The palate is more tannic, fairly round though, full bodied, dark fruits, cassis, black cherry, wood, tart berries, medium plus finish. This bottle wasn't quite as good as one a bit over a year ago. This bottle was youthful. Excellent nonetheless. 92+pts.

  • 2006 Anderson's Conn Valley Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Reserve 93 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Very dark red-purple color, 1mm clear meniscus. Decanted for 1 hour plus. Drank two 3 oz pours over 4 hours. This was the tightest of the group out of the gate, lots of cedarbox on the nose, it then took about an hour before this really opened up, sweet blueberry pie, mulberry, blackberry, cigar, charcoal, dank earth. The palate was great though from the start, round and lush, gorgeous fruit, blackberry, cassis, blueberry, full bodied, inky, a touch of blackberry liqueur, some oak on the tail end. Long finish. Still young. 93+(+)pts.

Closing

this was a tough one to pick a wine of the night. Everything showed rather consistently.
