Introduction

Thank you so much to Marty and Jeremy for allowing me to join in their Tuesday night ritual. We had so much fun we extended it to Wednesday. Fabulous wines and I learned a lot!

Flight 1 (12 Notes)

  • 2002 Domaine Dujac Bonnes Mares 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

We were fortunate to drink this over two days. A very powerful nose of ripe dark fruit, subtle spice and a touch of iron and earth. Large scaled in the mouth. Others enjoyed this more than I did as I found it a bit chunky and quite tannic. I found it even more tannic on day 2. Still very impressive, but this needs a long time to unwind.

  • 2002 Domaine Dujac Clos de la Roche 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

We also were able to try this over two days and it was equally good both times. Beautiful nose of red and black fruit, more spice than the 2002 BM and much more integrated and round in the mouth. A prettier wine showing more complexity and detail than the BM. This, too, as a long way to go but is showing much better today. It does not seem to have moved much since I had it two years ago.

  • 1990 Domaine Leroy Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

We were able to have this over two days. A typical Leroy nose of exuberant spice, ripe red fruit, some black fruit, iron and mushroom. The palate matched, but seemed a bit tired. Perhaps this was not the best example. It did not hold up well on day 2. That said, Leroy is like sex: even when it's bad, it's still pretty good.

  • 1990 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques 96 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

A stunning nose of spice, red and black fruit, beautiful floral notes and a bit of earth. Wonderful detail on the palate that certainly displayed clean, sleek ripe fruit but also a gamey note as well as lovely spice. Long, detailed finish that emphasized the fruit. Very sleek yet plenty of complexity.

  • 1991 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques 98 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Absolutely thrilling nose of dried flowers, spice, ripe red fruit. The detail and complexity on the palate was actually a step from from the 1990 CSJ we had next to it. This wine was a study in 'power without weight' as it hit every corner of your mouth and the finish lasted for minutes, but it was not heavy at all. Perfectly mature and spectacular balance. Wonderful grip. My WOTN against some pretty serious competition.

  • 1999 Domaine d'Auvenay (Lalou Bize-Leroy) Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru

Only 292 bottles produced--which makes me very sad. This was outstanding. Beautiful freshness and detail. Oily, citrus and wonderful nuttiness. Lithe. Big but not heavy. Long, sleek and lingering finish. A real treat.

  • 2009 Coche-Dury Meursault Les Rougeots 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

I loved this wine. Big, rich, full in the mouth. Creamy and oily at the same time. Not terribly detailed, but love the use of oak. Medium finish.

  • 2007 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Ruchottes-Chambertin Clos des Ruchottes 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru

Add this to the list of superb 2007s I have enjoyed lately. They are just so expressive, soft and inviting. A very pretty nose of flowers, sweet red fruit and soft spice against a backdrop of iron and minerals. The palate matches with a touch of black fruit thrown in with a hint of mushroom. Very pretty and love the finesse on the medium finish. Doesn't have the depth to last forever, but who cares as it's wonderful today.

  • 2007 Emmanuel Rouget Echezeaux 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

I slightly preferred this to the 2007 Rousseau Ruchottes we had next to. Just a touch more complexity on the nose that really emphasized the floral notes and long with extremely subtle spice. There is a detail on the palate that the 2007 vintage really allows to shine through. Again, this does not have the stuffing to last forever but it's beautiful now.

  • 2009 Henri Boillot Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru

Notes of citrus, wet stone and a touch of hazelnut on the nose and palate. This is a really good wine, but next to the Ramonet and Coche, there is certainly a dimension and complexity that is missing. Love the texture on the finish.

  • 2004 Domaine Ramonet Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru

Nicely complex and vibrant nose of white flowers, citrus, and creme brulees. Touch of the herbal note I often find with Ramonet. This was less minty than the Chevalier. Love the 2004 fatness on the palate.

  • 2004 Domaine Ramonet Chevalier-Montrachet 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru

This seemed cleaner and more precise than the BBM we had next to it. Steely, focused in the mouth. Nice citrus and minty note. Love the richness, but the broadness of the BBM flavor profile was slightly more appealing. Splitting hairs. Long finish.
