Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • 1988 Château L'Eglise-Clinet 88 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Tasted blind: Mature red in color. Nose reminds of wet earth, leather and mushrooms. It's style is elegant, but unfortunately too dry, too much acidity and unbalanced. I had better bottles of this wine, but overall one sees the limitations of the 1988 Pomerols. Drink now

  • 1988 Vieux Château Certan 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Tasted blinds: Clear red, showing some signs of bricking. Herbal and leathery nose. The wine is smooth, elegant, and everything is nicely integrated. Still plenty of juice left. On the negative side the 88 Vieux Certan is a bit dry, acidic and tannic. Still overall a solid wine to drink now.

  • 1988 Château Certan de May 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Tasted blind: Clear red. Nose of red berries, coffee with hints of lovage. Nicely balanced with a good structure and plenty of power left. The wine is still sweet (Caramel) and long. Drink now over the next decade. Quite a positive surprise...

  • 1988 Château Gazin Pomerol 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Tasted blind: Clear red. Nose of leather, earth and coffee. As many 1988 Pomerols the Gazin is dry, tannic, acidic and a bit out of synch. At the same time the wine is very smooth and fun to drink. A good food companion to drink now. This wine will still hold up for a few years.

  • 1988 Château Trotanoy Flawed

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

The discussion in the round was if the bottle is flawed or if this is just the way the wine is. I gave this bottle the benefit of the doubt and assume that there are better bottles arounds, hence no rating.

Flight 2 (6 Notes)

  • 1988 Château Ausone 93 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Tasted blind: Clear ruby in color. Nose of Caramel (Coke), herbs and hints of leather. Quite smooth and elegant. An easy drinking classical Bordeaux...My first Ausone of the pre-Perse area and I am quite positively surprised by its quality. Drink now as this won't get any better

  • 1988 Château Cheval Blanc 94 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Tasted blind: Deep ruby in color. Nose shows eucalyptus, coffee, tobacco, leather and hints of Coke. Very elegant and nicely integrated acidity. Smooth, sweet...one feels in Bordeaux heaven. Great wine to drink over the next 10 years or so.

  • 1988 Château La Mission Haut-Brion 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Tasted blind: Ruby in color. Nose of leather, tobacco and roasted coffee beans. Quite complex and still tannic. A bit unbalanced and acidic which is fortunately overpowered by the nice sweetness. A great classical Graves. It is mature but has plenty of life left...

  • 1988 Château Haut-Brion 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Tasted blind: Still quite deep in color. Nose of red berries, tobacco and leather. Youthful, powerful, tannic and very elegant. A superb wine and very enjoyable to drink. My best Haut Brion 88 so far. Drink now over the next 10-15 years.

  • 1988 Château Haut-Bailly Flawed

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Unfortunately so badly tainted that the wine had to be spilled. On the cork scale this bottle made a 99/100..

  • 1988 Château Canon 90 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Tasted blind: Dark in color. Quite earthy, leathery and herbal nose. The wine is quite mature, shows a bit of tartiness and is a bit one dimensional. This is very food friendly, easy drinking wine. On the hedonistic scale it would definitely rate higher then the technical 90 points. The wine is fully mature and should be drunk

Flight 5 (2 Notes)

  • 1988 Château d'Yquem 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Tasted blind: Golden in color. Nose is a bit soapy and alcohol is quite present. Nice sweetness, not to fat, kind of honey liquor. Good structure and long. Good Sauternes but for my not (yet?) a great d'Yquem. Drink now over the next decades...

  • 1988 Château Climens 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac

Tasted blind: Light amber in color. Nose of ripe peaches and dried apricot. Nice sweetness and got structure. Only weakness is the tartiness and the hints of bitterness to it. Still young. Drink now - 2035
