Lots of ripe orchard fruit with energy, density and power to start. Popped and poured, this was best after 5-10 minutes in glass as sweet spice started to emerge. This held up very nicely for close to an hour. Later in the evening (open ~4 hours) it came across as faded and shrill.

Slightly less exciting vs another bottle from earlier this year, this is showing lots of peach and ripe apple with good spice and power, but this is slightly more advanced than I would expect. Also less energy. Best when first opened and poured, much shorter and less interesting a couple of hours later.

Sensational wine to start and stayed great throughout the evening, even expanding with more time on glass. Wide array of fruit aromas, with lemon peel, peach, ripe apple and faint tropical hints with spice hints of nutmeg and allspice. Long, incredibly textured and nuanced. This kept changing and improving over several hours. Wow, thanks Rob!

Also popped and poured, this would have benefited from some air. Lots of orchard fruit on nose and palate, still showing a touch of pronounced new oak. Good acidity and minerality, particularly from middle to finish, gives lots of lift. Better in another year or three.

Unmistakable Leroy from the start with huge Vosne spice and perfumed character. Red and black berries on nose and palate are ripe, forward and very lush, but showing enough backbone and texture to make this more interesting. Moderate length.

Popped and poured. Blackberry with black pepper, cooked mushroom and some sweet spice. Lots of power and nuance throughout. Very charming and long. Happy birthday, Gary!

Open ~30 minutes before serving, this was best when first poured. Gamy, ripe and meaty to start with ripe black fruit with forest floor. Started getting leaner and less interesting after 30 minutes in glass as the fruit disappeared.

This was sadly all about nail polish remover. Va monster.

Gary's contribution to his birthday dinner, this was a very good bottle. Ripe black fruit, more fruit than earth, but the two well in good harmony. Long and very energetic.

Sweet but simple, subtle and seemingly almost stripped of fruit. Declined quickly in glass. Flawed in some way?

This was shared by a friend at the next table who happened to also be at the same restaurant. Ironically I opened the 2000 vintage of this wine the day before. I definitely preferred this 2001, which also showcased ripe, modern black fruit, but was leaner, better structured and more elegant. This wine should hold well for another decade.

Shared by a friend who also happened to be at the same restaurant, next table. Black cherry with some dark chocolate, gamy elements and very good concentration for its level. Slightly firm and rugged for right now, even though I think this had been open a while. I'd expect this to be better in a few years.

Strawberry and apple flavors and aromas with moderate intensity. Fun and very pleasurable right now.
