Introduction

It was a pleasure to host Lasse and his friends here. Nothing better than great company and great wines. Guys - you are always welcome in this house and I hope you had as much fun as we did.
A special thanks to Carlo - both for introducing us to his friend and for the wines. The Keller was my WOTN. Keller has a special touch with trockens - and that is a lot coming from a person who openly prefers sweeter Rieslings.
Hope to see you all again - whether in NY or in Denmark.

Flight 1 (1 Note)

Easily my WOTN. so much power and finesse here.

  • 2011 Weingut Keller Nierstein Riesling Trocken 93 Points

    Germany, Rheinhessen

peach, apple - especially ripe apples, touch of tropical nuance. floral, with a hint of granny smith apples on the mid to keep this big boy fresh. very long finish. THIS is what i want to see in a trocken riesling. To my palate - too many of the others overpower with grapefruit/skin notes.

Flight 2 (5 Notes)

Impossible to choose my favorite red tonight. Three of them could easily wear that crown.

  • 2001 Fattoria del Cerro Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Antica Chiusina 93 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montepulciano, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano

cherry, touch of tobacco, chewy wine with great black fruit in the middle, good length on a refreshing finish. still young and can develop. Lovely wine.

  • 2008 Argiano Brunello di Montalcino L'Orciaia 91 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Needs a bit more time - but developing nicely. A good decant should do. Not one to hold for ages though. Iron notes, with cherry and supple ripe middle, good acidity and finish. perhaps a bit simple - but very enjoyable.

  • 2010 KMV Project Red Bordeaux Blend 93 Points

USA, New York, Long Island, North Fork

Slow ox for 8 hours. Showing really well tonight. Big ripe nose, lots of power there, but on the palate it has both structure and the acidic backbone to support the wine. Minerality over the ripe fruit. Merlot does show itself beautifully here. very long finish. just plain excellent.

  • 2006 Turley Zinfandel Old Vines 91 Points

    USA, California

Still very primary, with just a int of development. This wine was all about sweet fruit and lush ripe body. Hint of the herbs and spices that make it much more complex than the first sip suggests. Drinking well but in no hurry to age. Perhaps simple when faced against a single vineyard wine but a simple pleasure is a wonderful thing.

  • 2005 Carlisle Zinfandel Pietro's Ranch 93 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

showing wonderfully tonight. Big bold wine with plums and black fruit mixing into the spicy and ripe notes. Amazing balance for a 16% wine. Ripe mid with great acidity and a still a tannic grip. With all the power - this is not jammy by any means and carries itself with impressive class. ( btw this is a "field blend" with 82% Zin and 18% others)

  • 2001 Joh. Jos. Christoffel Erben Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Auslese 91 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Ripe apples and floral notes, a touch of spice. This is really more of a big spatlese than a modern auselse - extremely clean wine. Some red berries peeking in, a touch of petrol at the start but it blew off quickly. Long middle and finish - sleek and easy going. This will need a few more years to develop into a great spatlese - more of a starter than a dessert wine for sure. (and perhaps suffered a bit for having been drunk after several very big wines)
