  • 2012 La Scolca Gavi Etichetta Bianca 89 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Gavi

Drank at WWS Piedmonte tasting. Very dry, with lots of minerality. Some fruit, fairly long but bitter finish. A bit on the austere side, but I still enjoyed it. This wine is definitely in the mineral category.

  • 2010 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco 89 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

Drank at WWS Piedmont tasting. Feint ruby color, fairly reticent nose with a feint scent of roses/flowers. Mildly tannic, mostly resolved (surprisingly for such a young wine). Decent acidity level, lots of minerals & earth here, outweighing the fruit. Fairly long, somewhat bitter finish.

  • 2007 Sottimano Barbaresco Currá 93 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

Drank at WWS tasting, supplied by RF. Bright crimson in color, lots of roses, as well as tobacco on the generous nose. More full bodied than I expected, & quite a long, pleasant finish. Earthy, with red cherries, as well as tobacco & tar notes on the palate. Also very nice spice. Good acidity level, and still quite tannic--I'd give this wine another 5-10 years before opening again. All in all, a very enjoyable, though young barb. Great complexity & balance between the earth/mushroomy notes, and the generous fruit & spice. Decant at least 90 minutes!

Flight 3 (3 Notes)

  • 2010 G.D. Vajra Barolo Albe 90 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Drank at WWS Piedmonte tasting. Pale ruby red in color, with orange rim. Looks older than it is. Not much that I could get on the nose--perhaps some roses, but not much there. Predominantly coffee & tobacco, with some hints of pepper and tar. Not a bad barolo but nothing memorable here.

  • 2006 Giovanni Rosso Barolo Serralunga d'Alba 90 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Drank at WWS Piedmonte tasting. Very light, almost pinkish in color. Lots of violets or roses, & sweet red fruits on the palate. Menthol, more earthy than I expected. Spicy. Nice long finish, with lots of tobacco showing as it opened up. This wine is yet a baby, and needs time. Also I would certainly decant this wine for at least an hour next time around.

  • 1997 Poderi Luigi Einaudi Barolo 94 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Drank at WWS Piedmonte tasting. Fairly dark (for a barolo) crimson color, appearing much more youthful than expected. Slight bricking at the edges. On the nose, floral, some leather, some tobacco. Very pleasant. On the palate, lots of eucalyptus or menthol, leather, tobacco and tar. Still plenty of fruit here--cherries & raspberries, along with somewhat resolved soft tannins. Subtle, very pretty, well-balanced & complex pour & definitely the WOTN. The superb condition of this wine greatly exceeded my expectations & all very much enjoyed it. Wonderful balance between the earthy & still copious fruit level here. Great bottle! Decant in the future before pouring.
