Introduction

This dinner was put together when Mr. F wanted to try the '88 Margaux that he has just acquired - if it warranted more (purchases) should it be superlative. Except for the Margaux, we had no idea what wine(s) each would bring. Hah, little did I expect the Margaux to be the only Bord for the evening...

2 "interludes" - (1) Daniel, after all these while emailing you at Bibendium and Wine Networks, it was great to finally meet you in person. Hope you have a fruitful trip here and to HK. (2) Linda/Alice, thanks for helping to get my bottle of CdlR endorsed by the man himself - Monsieur Ponsot!

Flight 2 (2 Notes)

  • 2011 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Chambolle-Musigny

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny

Nose was a bit reserved when first poured. After some time in the glass, it yielded scents of flowers and dark berries. Silky (even lush) and elegant on the palate; one can also feel the "weight"... Very very good village with the structure to last for quite some years. Would definitely like to see how this will turn out with more bottle-age...

  • 2005 Louis Jadot Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques Domaine Louis Jadot

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Apparently the plot's the most famous Gevry premier-cru. But clearly this is not its night for it to strut its stuff. Quite closed on the nose; A bit of mushrooms and dark cherries after some swirling in the glass. Some earth, cherries and blood ("backflow" from a nose-bleed). The alcohol is somewhat disjointed from the rest of the components. After ~2hrs in the glass, this started shutting down... So yes, components are there, but definitely need a lot of time to come together. Try again in another decade.

Flight 3 (2 Notes)

  • 2009 Thibault Liger-Belair Richebourg

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru

Deep dark red color. Flowers and spice on the nose. On the palate, this felt "majestic" after having had the Roumier & Jadot. So dense (power) - spice and dark-berries on the palate, but so balanced (fruit and freshness). Very long. Impressive. Definitely has the stuffing to last, but no harm trying one now :)

  • 1988 Château Margaux

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Now, the dinner last evening was put together becoz a friend wanted to try this that he just acquired (to decide if he should buy more). A pristine bottle (from looks). Decanted for an hour+. Dark red color with no signs of bricking. Nose was great - tar, dark-fruits, leather, smoke. On entry, palate was great too - dark fruits, mushrooms. Sweet silky tannins and very fresh. However, the finish was quite abrupt & short. We were left scratching our heads. Verdict - lots of other options for the same price.

Flight 4 (1 Note)

  • 2009 Domaine Michel Gaunoux Pommard 1er Cru Rugiens-Bas

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru

Only decided to pop this towards end of dinner. Had this almost 2-yrs ago, but since the rest hadn't, why not? Quick-decant, & into the glass it went. Now, now, the look on Mr. P & Mr. F's faces - "WTH did u just pull out?". This was as young and impressive as the Thibault Richebourg, if not, definitely more expressive! Nose of red & black berries, flowers. On the palate, this was sappy, great fruit-weight with fine velvety tannins. Balanced, elegant and a great length. Fitting wine to end the evening...
