  • 2019 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin

A friend txt'ed early in the morning about meeting for dinner, sharing a quartet of wines of which the '19 Chambertin was the centerpiece. Definitely too good an opportunity to pass, especially since the Rousseaus were priced at almost half their market-prices. Served beside the '21 Gevrey village, this was almost day-night different. It was as if the village had everything dialed up/amplified by a few folds. Spice/sandalwood & dark/black berries/currants dominated the nose. In the mouth, this showed unbelievable concentration of layered, pure black-fruits encased in a sensual & velvety robe, with the tannins & structure hidden beneath. Incredibly young, no doubt, but definitely enjoyable. If there's any detracting element, it was just the nose which showed a slight bit of wood influence, but otherwise, an incredible wine which should gain even more complexity with cellar age...

  • 2021 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin

Next up was this pair of Rousseaus (non-blind) - this '21 Gevrey village & the '19 Chambertin. Greeted almost immediately by a beautiful/perfumy bouquet of red-berries, spice & some roses. Very easy (perhaps too easy) on the palate, this was extremely pure & lifted with more red-berry fruits. As opposed to the Chambertin, this definitely seemed a tad light-footed, but nonetheless, a very pretty wine and most enjoyable!

  • 2020 Olivier Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Champs-Gain

Blinded alongside the Sous le Dos d'Âne, this showed/nosed more Puligny (w/ white florals coming to the fore after airing in glass). Had the domaine & appellation correct but the vintage wrong for both. 😂 Similarly (slight oily) textured, this was also slightly more layered with seemingly (just) a bit more extract/concentration. Again, a very delicious & enjoyable start to the evening!
