Very dark, opaque core, highly extracted with thin garnet rim, some age; tar, dark, ash, tobacco, slight prune, cedar; powerful palate, ripe, some age, blackberry, Italian, sweet, some juicy fruit, not that astringent; called '06 Montevetrano.
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Dark chocolaty core, sediment, large bricking; aspirin, animal, sweet, fresh, floral, tart, cranberry, raspberry; palate is strong, good tannin wrap, cranberry, raspberry, some alcohol on back; called '01 Pegau.
Medium extraction, dull brown, large and almost green rim; strange nose, expected soy due to color but I was pleasantly greeted with mahogany, leather, sour cherry, orange oil, chestnut, graham cracker, perfumed, cola; nice texture, some alcohol, tart, tannin, sweet fruit; interesting, soft for Sagrantino; my first experience with Bea though I called Paolo Bea Sagrantino- no lie.
See through crimson, faint rim; perfumed, sweet fruit, roses, confected cherry, Slavonian oak; fresh palate, sandalwood, tannin, long cherry finish, sour cherry, slight orange, hint of cinnamon; this bottle reminded me of Sangiovese; did not give it enough air though it was still tasty.
Very dark core, opaque, thin garnet rim; cigar, luxurious, currant, complex, earth, Christmas, nutmeg, spice, vanilla; young, grainy tannin, powerful, sweet dark fruit, green, deep; nose is complex, palate is already drinkable; everyone in St. Julien.
Opaque core with thin garnet rim; tar, ash, blackberry, currant, dark and brooding nose, incense; blackberry, harsh tannin that sucks all of the moisture from your mouth, dark chocolate; reminded me of '05 La Gaffeliere; seemingly dumb and in need of some serious softening in bottle or decanter.
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Darker core with large bricking; cigar, rotting cabbage, leather, cedar, currant, tart red fruit, aged, rusty- clay?, green pepper; lighter on the palate, resolved tannin; delicious, good now.
A very enjoyable tasting with a good variety of wines. Interesting to have 2 Sagrantinos from the 2 masters. My ranking: 1- '95 Figeac 2- '05 Petit-Village 3- '04 Pegau
