Introduction

This tasting was organized by Jesper Hedegaard. Whom also presented the wines and told about Saint Emilion, the changes to the classification and many other things.

Flight 1 - The winners (3 Notes)

The first flight presented three wines, all 2003, from producers who all moved up in the new classification.

  • 2003 Château Fleur Cardinale 89 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Good dark deep color. The merlot dominates the nose, with strawberry, cherry and chocolate. The taste is warm, with fruit, tobaco, and bitter chocolate. Clear tannic feel. After a while in the glass it seemed to shutdown, and the nose closed and changed it's aromas. Modern style St. Emilion.

  • 2003 Château Monbousquet 93 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Black/red color with a youthful edge. First impression is lots of smoke! The nose is smoky, creamy, dark fruit and some earthy tones. The taste is very warm, fat fruit, creamy, coffee and cream, vanila and toasted bread. Massive aftertaste with well integrated silky tannins. The fruit is well balanced with tones of earth, undergrowth and prunes. This wine has alot going - its biggest problem is that it might have too much! It seems a bit wild and vulgar. Modern style St. Emilion.

  • 2003 Château Pavie Macquin 93 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Dark color with a brick red edge. Aromas of cherry and herbs, frail and elegant. The taste has sweet cherries, strawberry, herbs and some bitter chocolate. Strong tannins will take some time to integrate probably. A nice long aftertaste and good overall balance. This could be big later, but for now cellar it! Clasical style.

Flight 2 - The losers (2 Notes)

The second flight presented two wines with more age from producers who did not make it out of the lowest class this time.

  • 2000 Château Quinault L'Enclos 91 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Good dark red/black color. Warm dark cherries and coffee on the nose. The taste is intense and full-bodied, ripe cherry and strawberry. Balanced with some cooler metalic tones and some dark chocolate. Good long taste, very nice.

  • 1994 Virginie de Valandraud 88 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Brickred color with a slightly brown edge. The nose is dominated by red fruit, with some hints of metal and leather. A light and frail taste of strawberry and cherry, and hints of tobacco and chocolate. Acidity and tannins are still clear on the taste, while keeping balance. Aftertaste of medium lenght. This is probably as good as this gets, still it will probably last another 5 years, from then it is downhill.
