Introduction

A BIG night, which ended up with a Weinbach, 3 Grand Cru v.s. 3 Premier Cru. A learning issue in every bottle.

Flight 1 (7 Notes)

  • 2010 Domaine Weinbach Riesling Cuvée Ste. Catherine 94 Points

    France, Alsace

Tasted blind. Pop and poured and drank over 2 hours.
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, gold colour. Long legs.
Nose is clean, medium intensity, with aromas of honey lemon, citrus lime, stony minerality, and hints of petroleum. Developing.
On the palate, dry, lovely high acidity, high alcohol, full body. Pronounced flavour intensity, with flavours of citrus lime, tropical pineapple, starfruit, and the persistent vein of stony minerality. Long finish. Intense and full-bodied, but still manages to have laser-like precision and linearity on the palate thanks to the acidity.
Outstanding quality. Highly drinkable though young. This has a long long life ahead.

  • 2006 Bouchard Père et Fils Corton-Le Corton 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru

Tasted blind. Slow-oxed in bottle for about 1-2 hours before drinking.
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with a lovely bouquet of flowers, more hibiscus and jasmine rather than violets and roses as mentioned by a friend, vanilla and spice, and hints of loamy earth. Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol, soft supple medium- tannins, medium body. Medium flavour intensity, with flavours of fresh red cherry, mint, slight earthiness, and a tinge of stalkiness/stemminess with more air. Long finish.
Very good quality. Beautiful floral perfumed nose. Elegance on the palate. This had me thinking Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru. For a Corton GC, interestingly no dark fruit notes for me. This is very nice drinking now, but could still develop more tertiary notes over the next 5-10 years.

  • 2009 Dominique Laurent Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Corbeaux Cuvée Tradition 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

    Tasted blind.
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, purplish ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of vanilla, dark earth, slight truffle, and some stems. Developing.
On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, medium alcohol, medium tannins, medium+ body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of dark red cherry, ripe strawberry, dark earth, slight truffle, and slight spice. Hints of stemminess here and there. Long finish.
Very good quality. Lots of depth here, and at this point in time, feels rather young and tightly wound up. Took quite a lot of swirling in the glass for it to open up onto the palate. Keep this for another 8+ years.
Correctly picked out as a 2009, but the depth here had me thinking Chambertin Grand Cru level.

  • 2009 Claude Dugat Charmes-Chambertin 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

    Tasted blind.
Appearance is clear, medium intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of stony granite minerality, dark earth, forest floor, dark red cherries. Developing.
On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, medium alcohol, chewy medium tannins, medium+ body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of dark red cherries, black cherries, redcurrant, savoury dark earth with almost meaty quality, and stony granite minerality. Long finish.
Lovely balance and showing surprisingly well at this stage of its evolution. I actually thought it was slightly older than a 2009.
Very good quality. This will continue to develop well over the next 5-10 years.

  • 2008 Jean-Marc Millot Echezeaux 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

    Tasted blind.
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium- intensity, with aromas of initial soy sauce with faded off with more air, earth, red cherries, and some very slight sickly sweet cherry liquor/nail polish/bubblegum thing going on. Developing.
On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, medium alcohol, silky smooth medium- tannins, medium body. Medium flavour intensity, with flavours of sour red cherries, plums, and some earthiness. Much better with more air and swirling in the glass. Thankfully no bubblegum on the palate. Long finish.
Correctly picked out as 2008 vintage.
Very good quality, barring the unusual note on the nose. Will develop and improve over the next 5-10 years.

  • 2009 François Parent Volnay 1er Cru Les Fremiets 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

    Tasted blind. Pop and poured.
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium intensity, with aromas of granite minerality, tea leaves, dark earth, dark red cherries. Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol, medium tannins, medium body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of dark red cherries, redcurrant, ripe strawberry, earth, minerality, and a slight meatiness. Long finish.
Very good quality. Interesting dark character here for a Volnay. Possibly the iron in the Fremiets soil leads to more structure and muscularity and maybe the darker character. No doubt still has the elegance of Volnay though. Will develop well over the next 5+ years.

    Tasted blind.
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of soy sauce, earth, slight truffles, red cherries. Developing.
On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, medium alcohol, medium tannins, medium body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of sweet red cherries, strawberry, earth, slight truffle. Long finish.
Quite approachable and had me guessing 2008 vintage.
Very good quality. Very nice drinking now. Will develop more tertiary notes over the next 5 years.
