  • Drinking very well, balanced, elegant, nice mouthfeel, and tannins largely resolved, though there’s still a tiny, tiny bit of roughness at the end—only noticeable after you’ve finished your food. It was perfect with roasted duck and a revelation to my companion, who wasn’t sure she liked Grand Cru Burgundy because she’s sensitive to tannins and acid. She was still raving an hour later. I truly doubt it will improve—there’s enough fruit but just enough.

  • Bottle breathe for 1 hour. This is relatively modern style, easy to drink, but unfortunately lack of complexity as Grand Cru

  • Zoom blind tasting #1 (At home): Another rather disappointing showing - quite a few of us guessed that this was a New World pinot. It started out with a rather strange nose - a jarring break from the lovely Burgundian aromas of the first two wines on the flight. There was an underlayer of really sweet raspberry ripple and bandung (a rose water and condensed milk drink) aromas, overlaid with a bit of leafy, funky sous bois. With a bit of time, more bramble and spice started floating out as well. I liked it more on the palate. It had the rich thickness of a modern wine on attack, with a bit more of those sweet raspberry ripple and rose notes, wrapped in a robe of velvety tannins and smooth acidity, but this then thinned out somewhat on the midpalate and beyond. There was a nicely elegant shape and feel throughout, but it somehow lacked the effortless energy and transparency of the first couple of wines, and seemed to thin out a little more towards the finish as well. Second bottle of the 2008 for me, and both have shown disappointingly for a maker I hold in high regard.

  • K's Visit (SPD Paragon): This is showing really well: lifted, complex with autumn leaves and sweet fruits had me guess a Chambolle 2008. This is exactly why I love 2008s red, great freshness, lovely balance of acidity and fresh ripe fruits. Elegant and keep coming back for another sip. Long with good persistent and inner mouth perfume.

  • Lo Hei dinner at Peach Garden (Peach Garden, OCBC Building): Pleasant, but still a little young and a little green. The nose showed lifted notes of red cherries and roses, savoury earth, tinged with lifts of spice and rose petals. A nice nose, with just the green being a bit distracting. The palate was nice, but a bit behind though. A true 2008, it was finely structured and nicely transparent, with pure flavours of red cherries and rose petals, along with a twist of Vosne spice. Slightly thin for a Grand Cru maybe, but this had a nice classical shape to it. Finish was decent rather than impressive, trailing away with a linger of spice and flowers. Nice and enjoyable, but unconvincing for a Grand Cru.
