Introduction

We tasted the 4 Cabs semi-blind. Double blind to some, single blind to others. The cabs were sandwiched by different examples of chenin blanc.

Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • 2007 Foreau Domaine du Clos Naudin Vouvray Pétillant Brut Réserve

France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray Pétillant

Classic sparkling chenin blanc. Lemon, lime zest, orchard fruits and minerals. Clean and crisp.

Now 16ish years on, this appears to have peaked and is on the downward side of a long bell curve drinking window. There are signs it may be getting just a bit tired. That is not to say it was bad on this night. Still a powerhouse and delicious but it seemed to lose just a tad of the freshness and power from our previous bottle over 5 years ago. Tannins have subsided a bit. Acidity is still there. Chocolate, dark fruit and menthol make for a delicious wine. This will still be good for a few years but I would not hold for much longer.

  • 2009 Scholium Project Chuey

    USA, California, North Coast

Decanted for 3 hours. Not your typical California Cabernet. Lighter. Red fruits dominate, along with the acidity. Maybe a touch of menthol. In any event, this showed much lighter than I expected. Definitely a cooler climate wne. Tannins not really pronounced. This had a lip smacking juiciness due tot he acidity but it resembled a wine that would be, say in the $20-30 range.

  • 2002 David Arthur Cabernet Sauvignon Elevation 1147

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Wine of the night stuff here. A terrific Cali Cab in a fantastic spot. Decanted for about 3 hours. Nose is big blue fruit but incredibly well balanced. Black cherry, a touch of secondary notes. Shows a touch of age but not near the 12+ years on this as of now. Tannins are silky smooth. Acidity is well balanced. This is powerful but has a freshness to it. Finish is nice and long. This may not be a "perfect" wine but it is an exceptional 100% cabernet wine.

  • 2008 BOND Vecina

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Impressive but ultimately a couple of nits. This is rather big on the nose bursting with dark fruits, sweet and bitter. On the palate, there is a mild but noticeable green or herbal note. Not off putting but its there. The fruit is dense on the palate but this lacked a bit of acidity to balance it out. Seemed like the fruit dominated without enough structure. This clearly has the pedigree and these Bond wines can be absolutely terrific. That said, again, there are too many nits for a wine with this price tag.

  • 2005 Domaine des Baumard Quarts de Chaume Grand Cru

France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Quarts de Chaume Grand Cru

Hoo boy. In a fantastic place right now. Thick and viscous. Sweetness perfectly balanced by the acidity. This is should age wonderfully but its just so hard to hold on to these. Peach, stone fruit, apricot and honey. Minerals, spice and brown sugar. There is mild development but really the evolution will be glacial. The finish is long long long.
