Introduction

A treat to taste a 2000, 2001, and 2009 Malescot St. Exupery (Margaux) side-by-side. In a way it was more like two side-by-sides, with the 2000 anchoring them each. The 2000 vs 2001 made for an especially instructive tasting, to enjoy the same land and producer's attempts in consecutive vintages, one classic and one merely very good. In comparison, the 2000 vs. 2009 really came down to preference: youthful vs aged, specific and pointed vs lush and fruit-forward. Hoping to do an MSE '00, '05, '09, '10 some day.

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 2000 Château Malescot St. Exupéry 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Expansive with layers of coffee, dates, black raspberry and more complexities. Stately but not uptight. Stratified and deliciously manicured. Long and polished.

  • 2009 Château Malescot St. Exupéry 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Fresh raspberries; pungent fruit; blueberries, great structure. Beautiful clarity until the tannins close the shutters. Decanted for hours but it could have used more. Similar profile to the 2000 in its youth, but more ripe, lush, and fruit-driven. Should improve over the next five years and could be really incredible.

  • 2001 Château Malescot St. Exupéry 89 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Shares an essential personality with the '00 and riper '09 but thinner and far shorter than either. Still, very good, with a stellar complex bouquet. Easier than the others to drink for the first few hours but eventually lost some of its pleasure.
