Introduction

Had some friends over to sharpen my cooking skills as well as of course to share our wine with. Had a great time as always with this bunch. Served up pan fried halloumi cheese with halved cherry tomatoes in olive oil and balsamic vinegar for the starter. The mains featured 3 tomahawk steaks weighing a total of 3kg grilled to medium rare (plus 2 pork chops for some in our midst who could not eat medium rare beef for one reason or another), caramelised onions and potato salad. Dessert was homemade profiteroles with vanilla ice cream, melted 50% chocolate and toasted almonds. A large cheese platter and numerous glasses of scotch saw us close out the night. As can be expected, we were stuffed!

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 1997 Antinori Tignanello 92 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

Decanted for an hour, poured back into bottle and left to stand for another hour. This (relatively) longer period given for the wine to breathe helped the wine show better versus the last time I had it about 6mths ago. Restrained and very well balanced with good transparency. Tannins are very fine. More "filled out" and less angular than my last experience with this wine. A joy to drink this fully mature Tig and a great start to our dinner.

  • 2005 Château Léoville Barton

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Decanted for 3hrs, poured back into the bottle and left to stand in bottle for a further 4hrs. What a gorgeous nose of ripe blackcurrants, tobacco, lead pencil and vanillin. On the palate, a wine of power- dense and concentrated dark fruit. Persistent finish lingered on for some time. However, this is just too young and thus I have refrained from penciling in any rating. Still a bit monolithic with the wall of tannins overwhelming the traces of subtle flavours lying latently in the wine. Needs at least 5-10 more years to start showing what it can do. So much potential but more patience required.

  • 2007 Tenuta di Biserno Biserno 94 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

Decanted for 2.5hrs, poured back into bottle and left to stand in bottle for a further 2hrs. This was unanimously the favourite wine for everyone around the dinner table tonight. So open and approachable with great concentration and opulence. Beautifully rich and tannins were sweet and well integrated. Medium plus finish. Could probably benefit with some further age but really enjoyable at the moment. A worthy challenger to many classified bordeaux but still shows some tuscan/mediterranean character.
