Color still Good! Soft mouth feel, medium body, dark fruit flavors - fig and plum and some tobacco leaf. Finish was short but nice. 27 years old - excellent!

Glorious Bordeaux like nose. Roast espresso, loamy soil, sweet dark berries, black currants, licorice, truffle and cocoa. Baking spices. Palate is complete and harmonious with a long finish.

Pronounced nose intensity with notes of black fruits, spices, toast, pepper. Medium acidity and medium tannin. Tannin is velvety. Long finish. Drinking well now and still going strong.

After a few disappointments in a 1990s Italian tasting that reinforced the notion of highly variable bottle quality this was far better. Very smooth, lots of black fruit, liquorice and as described by a former Vatican officer - scent of the sacristia from the Vatican

Drinking wonderfully. The nose was full of cherries with hints of tobacco and spice that exuded elegance that followed through on the palate with red fruits, leather, earth. Very well balanced, silky and still plenty fresh. One of the best showings for this last bottle out of a case purchased on realease.

Best bottle so far. Huge nose. Lots of barnyard funk. Taste tons of fruit, strawberries , cherry, cassis with the earthy funk on the backend. Super tasty. Drink up!!

An initial bouquet of menthol, shoe polish and leather was repeated on the palate with added notes of cream and talc. Unfortunately it was more astringent than tannic and I felt there may have been a touch of volatility as well as starting to dry out. I haven’t tasted Tignanello in a very long time but this was well past its best. Pity, as I was really looking forward to this wine in particular. CHP 83pts
Medium reddish garnet in color with ever-so-slight clearing at the edges. Full forward & fragrant nose of ripe fruit aromas of cherries & strawberries with overtones of floral notes of roses & earthy/dusty, cocoa/coffee, spices, leather, tar, anise, minerals & a hint of cedar in the background. Medium bodied with a very good concentration of well balanced & smooth textured, developed, ripe fruit flavors of cherries, blueberries & plums with mushrooms, chocolate, coffee, spices & minerals. Lingering silky-smooth finish. Drinks quite well at 25 years of age but I doubt any further development would occur from additional aging, so drink up! Fill was at bottom of neck above the shoulder; cork was stained 1/2 way up but intact upon opening.

Agree, its a beautiful wine right in the drinking window. Good tertiary notes, but no sign of decline. Full decant, not a lot of sediment, really opened up after an hour or so. Drank with steak, a perfect paring. Great nose, lot's of Sangiovese coming through. WOTN against the 2001 Siro Pacenti and 2003 Ornellaia. Really nice.

Beautiful wine. Wine 4 from our steak and lobster dinner. Decanted, but once again, because I didn't do it, I have no idea for how long. And once again, another wine that's right in its drinking window with no obvious signs of decline. Some tertiary characteristics are creeping in, but there's still lots of Sangiovese here and enough acidity to keep it popping. Still enough power here to pair well with the steak. If I owned though, I wouldn't wait much longer on it.

This was a part of 1997 and 1999 Tuscan tasting including 3 Brunellos and 2 Super Tuscans, same producers from each year. The wine is fully mature but not in a decline. Sweet red fruit on the nose and palate, intense flavours and show good structure ; tannins are resolved, The nose shows some, wood and leather, quite complex. The finish moderately long. Time to drink up. I do not think this is getting any better .

The 1997 Tignanello has been defined as historical, the best of its century and therefore after twenty five years it is even better. The climate of 1997 has favored the wine because the temperature range of September gave it structure. It has a dark ruby color and its aroma immediately reveals its maturity. Aromas of spices, cocoa, roasted coffee. Hints mentholated to penetrating. In the mouth it has very good tannins but they do not leave a bitter aftertaste. Good ending.

attractive medium red color, beautifully textured nose of evenly aligned dried leaves, wonderfully precise, dried berries, on the palate a perfectly mature and cuddly cherry fruit core surrounded by racy tea and dried leaf textures, good fragrant finish, plums with time, just starting to pass its best but still in a great place, carpe diem.
***+, drink soon.

Muted red color. Rhubarb, white oak, red raspberry and earth. Smooth, rounded wine with elegant flavors and subtleties of minerality, ash and blueberry. Rounded, lighter tannins and drinking quite lovely!
p.s. meatloaf, mashed potatoes and shisito peppers.

Drinking much better than last bottle I had. Definitely bottle variation, this one is from different case. Much more alive, vibrant. Great acidity, long finish. Lots of cherry pie notes. Still some tannin left. Would drink over next couple years but definitely drinking well.

The nose here signals the transition to tertiary aromas, notably with prominent tobacco and a touch of smoke.
The palate is smooth, like being in a cigar humidor, with a bright black cherry. The wine expresses itself in an obvious maturity, with a good balance and a sweet oak, on a dominant tobacco and leather. The leather dominates in an intense way on the finish.
Excellent but little lack of depth and structure in my opinion.

Palate of dried cherry, fig, initially a little sharp on the finish with tannins still pretty prominent but improved a lot with air, evening out and becoming more balanced.

Nice nose of red fruit, dark cherries, a hint of smoke, and leather. Good acidity on the palate with velvety structure and integrated tannins along with dark fruit and dark berries. Nice finish. It feels plush and polished, but not boring. This wine is in a good place right now. Fully mature without being old or tired.

Lots of red fruit in the nose with some damp, forest floor. A little faded on the palate perhaps past it’s peak. A bit astringent. Not bad, but not showing great. Drink up as seems like it may fade fast.

Dried cherry, cigar box, spice and a rustic woody quality in the nose. Palate is medium weight with medium+ tannin and medium acidity. There is still some life left here but I’m not sure the tannins will resolve before the fruit fades. Drink now.

Purchased on release. Labeled 13.5% ABV. Decanted at 5pm and tasted from 6:30 onwards. This continues to drink very youthfully. Translucent medium to dark garnet with no bricking. Nose is very floral with dark berry fruit and licorice. Much better with more air, kept getting better and better. Palate had integrated tannins, bright acidity and a fruit profile that started more red fruited then got more black plum and blackberry/black raspberry, slightly tart. Ripe but in an old world way, not over ripe. Still age-worthy. Medium bodied and rather feminine and elegant but full of flavor and very long on the finish. Probably still has room to evolve favorably. Great with grilled steaks.
p.s. I had some of this left over 48 hours later just corked and sitting on the counter and I was surprised how nicely it drank. Very soft and rich with a more black fruit profile along with some licorice and very light spice. The fruit was probably more forward than at any time on Saturday. I think Tig needs a LOT more air than most everyone gives it! Tempted to raise my score to 94 based on the results.

In my cellar since release with a price marked $59.99 on the bottle and I am sure I got a 20% discount on this with a mixed case at the time. Decanted at 5pm and tasted through about 11pm. This got more and more generous and round with air. Initially it was all red fruited and fairly high in acidity but as it blossomed it was more earthy and spicy, especially licorice. It is translucent medium garnet with little to no bricking. Tannins are mostly integrated and the structure is still holding this together. Very elegant and refined, by no means a fruit forward modern wine. Still plenty of life left.

Cellared since purchased around turn of century. Healthy deep black ruby though translucent to bulb in a reg pour in a balloon glass. Fairly fresh plummy fruit. Stiff tannins and med tart acids buoy this elder wine. Bravo to a well-produced wine that still brings pleasure. Paying well below 3 figs each for a trio of bottles allows for pats on back to Antinori and my cellar but at well-plus 3 figs a different pair of spectacles.

Excellent vintage for super tuscans, the wine is very ripe and elegant with fine tannins, very enjoyable now but will age for more one decade at least. Opened 3h prior to the service and decanted for 30 min.

Nose of black cherry, red cherry, allspice, spring flower and a touch of dusty earth and barnyard, same on the palate, medium/big body, very tasty, delicious tasting, almost elegant-better described as subtle tasting, mouth filling fruit, almost rich fruit with lots of complexity, great with French Brie, slightly passed it's prime drinking window and no need to cellar longer in my opinion, and a long, long, flavorful finish. Uploaded 2 photos of bottle/label/cork.

This bottle has changed significantly from a bottle consumed a little under a year and a half ago. My notes form then say drink up despite a very good drinking experience. I would now say drink up quickly. That echoes some other recent tasting notes on cellartracker.com.

For a wine that seemed to almost completely lack a nose, it really turned out to be nearly outstanding. Could tell this was once quite a big boy, but seems to have mellowed with age allowing tertiary elements like tobacco and floral notes to stand out, and what was likely an almost sweet candied youthful palate to become simply integrated and mature, contained and balanced by these other notes, with enough cherry remaining to keep it tasty. The wine kept evolving over a couple hours, though never really got any nose to open up. Anyway, a quite nice wine and a very good, mature place. I would not hang on to these much longer IMO. If you have it, enjoy it, it really is an interesting wine.

Vinetasters: Brown Bag (Skokie, IL): Served double blind. Very lovely nose, with some good black fruit and cassis here, but a slight hint of herbs. Touch of pyrazine on the nose as well. The palate is fairly young, showing some green herbal tones, and some really intense fruit flavours. Quite dark and concentrated. Perhaps a super Tuscan?

Only needs 20 min in the glass. Certainly in its prime. Still has great fruit with outstanding balance and a nice finish. This will not improve but will be enjoyable for another decade.

Dark and somewhat translucent auburn red that doesn't look that young nor too developed with a pale brick-orange rim. The nose feels savory and quite dark-toned with brooding aromas of juicy black cherries, some savory woody tones, a little bit of tobacco, light blackcurrant tones, a leafy hint of herbaceous Cab character and a perfumed, nicely developed touch of fragrant floral character. The wine is moderately full-bodied, somewhat concentrated and quite powerful on the palate with intense flavors of sour cherries, some fresh blackcurrants, slightly developed tones of wizened dar berries, a little bit of leather, light toasty oak tones, a hint of earthy forest floor character and a touch of licorice. Overall the wine feels impressively muscular and structured with its high acidity and still rather firm and grippy, grainy tannins. The finish is long, powerful and grippy with a little bit of alcohol warmth and powerful, savory flavors of ripe blackcurrant-driven forest fruits, some plummy tones, a little bit of savory, woody oak spice, a hint of forest floor and a developed touch of tobaco.
A wonderfully structured, beautifully developed and still very impressively tightly-knit vintage of Tignanello that doesn't feel young anymore, but is still full of potential for future development. The wine feels rather ripe and concentrated - even for Tignanello - yet it doesn't come across as particularly sweet-toned or excessively heavy but instead very structure-driven, savory and classically built. Starting to drink beautifully, yet still I have no doubts that this wine can evolve for another 20 years in a cellar. A very impressive and rewarding effort for a Super-Tuscan. Highly recommended.

This is why I cellar wine. Opened and poured out an ounce, and left the bottle open to "slow-ox." Tasted about 2 hours later. Ruby-red brick color. Nose offers some spice and red clay along with plum and fresh tobacco. Beautiful and elegant, with ripe plum, some mushroom notes, and that touch of spice. Everything is in balance and the wine shows levels of depth, with some mushroom notes, fresh tobacco, a hint of lead pencil, and chocolate. Delicious.

HDH auction at Spiaggia; 5/17/2018-5/19/2018 (Chicago, IL): The nose on this is a little concerning, with the plummy fruit starting to show a slight sign of browning and decay. There's a good bit of earthiness here, and some herbal notes but the ripeness doesn't do this wine many favours. The palate is just slightly stewy, and there's not much vibrancy left. Seems to me that this has already seen its best days.

Beautiful! Really soft, subtle and mature. A little hint of dark berry fruit still on the nose and palate but this is so well integrated and rounded that it's the overall that shines rather than the elements. Drink now and I would suggest it has a few years left in its sweetspot if you can resist!

With frieds at Sotto di Mare in San Francisco. Wine opened by restaurant. Purple in color Dark fruit and cinnamon on the nose, In the mouth black currants, spice, and licorice. Some leather and more spice in the background/. An enjoyable silky finish. Became even better during the hour we drank it. Bought in Italy on release by the person who brought the bottle.
Strawberry and cocoa on the nose. Ripe bordering on overripe. It is supple and round with nice herbal background. Savory and fruit in a nice mix, and well made, but for me a little fat and simple. It left me unmoved. Much less impressive than the last bottle.

Unbelievable. Beautiful dark ruby without a hint of bricking. The cork was perfect, only half infused; bottle from a case purchased on release and stored at 55f it's entire life. The nose is rich with cherry, plum, hints of cedar/delicate earth and a touch of leather. On the palate - Wow! Cherry, plum, leather, fantastic spice notes, and that touch of forest floor earthiness. Very decent acidity and smooth as silk with beautifully integrated tannins - this wine was amazing out of the gate and continued to open over the first hour. This bottle was peaking - nothing "old" about this bottle - I am drinking my 750's and holding the mags. Easily the best Tig I can ever recall tasting and I rarely miss a vintage.

Aerated 90 minutes, the aromas ranged fruit earth and soil, to mature red/dark red fruits. Lovely complexity at this stage, with the palate showing the plus side of medium-bodied. Acids and tannins in stride with the mature layers of fruit. A big-ish impression at first, but then some weightlessness as it moves to a magnificent final. Easily enjoyed now, and should remain here several more years before beginning a gentle decline. Cork/fill in vg condition; served non-blind. highly recommended
Bought a 6b-case for $400 about 15 years ago from a local independent (also found one bottle for 50 from a local restaurant a few years later (they decided it would never sell) and bought another at Heathrow duty free for 30 pds sterling). Tried two bottles within 6-8 years of vintage and found the wine closed; decided to leave it for a while. This latest bottle was delicious after 2h decant in Chicago hotel room before birthday dinner on Topo Gigio's garden patio. Color: dark purple to the edge; Nose: dark fruits, bit of oak; Body: rich mouthfeel, lots of mature fruit; Finish: lingers for 15-20s. It's ready to drink but will last for several more years. My storage conditions: Stored horizontally in dark basement with 50-55 humidity; corks do well, though I've had a few break on older bottles stored 10+ years closer to the dehumidifier. My evaluation: I've stopped giving scores on a "100-point scale" as I've become less convinced that they can be meaningful to others. I use a 4-category scale (perhaps with +/-)--not including flawed--which runs outstanding/notable/drinkable/poor. I consider this '97 Tignanello to be outstanding- when considering quality, age, and price.

Decanted and drunk over 90 minutes. Took 20-30 minutes to open and reveal its nose. Fruit flavours still strong. Slightly dry mouthfeel though tannins have softened significantly. A delicious mature Super Tuscan. Will go another 5 years if well stored.

Zachys dinner: double-decanted and served 3 hours later. Nose has dried red fruit, sous bois, tea leaf, and cedar. Palate has high acidity with softened tannins but the length is a bit short for a 97. A classic super tuscan.

WSET Diploma - South America (and a Tignanello!) (SF): Day-after opening, so no score. Medium minus garnet to a tawny rim. Extremely developed, but not totally oxidized. Savory tertiary tamari notes, hints of dried, developed cherry. Sweet well-integrated Brett. It has a weight to it - and a plushness.
Dry, medium body, medium plus alcohol, medium plus acid, medium plus but extremely velvety tannins. Long finish - dried cherry, sweet tamari. Very nice.

Dinner with the TCWC guys (Osteria Langhe, Chicago IL): Nose: The nose has a ripeness to it, but balanced with licorice, roasted herbs, red cherries, tobacco, raspberries, and spice notes. There is a slight hint of oak poking through along with this showing off excellent depth.
Taste: Medium/full bodied with medium+ acidity and medium tannins. The structure is essentially resolved with the acidity providing a nice spine. The feel is refined and larger scaled with licorice, herbs, red cherries, spice tones, and tobacco notes.
Overall: This is drinking beautifully right now. It is well resolved and in beautiful balance right now. It's not drying out and everything is still there, so one can easily hold if they want to.

Dinner at Osteria Langhe (Chicago, IL): In contrast to the Poggio di Sotto, this is just such a different beast. Black fruit, with a little bit of dried herbs. The fruit here is very, very ripe, and there's a little bit of sweetness here to boot. It's a big wine, no doubt, but it doesn't go over the top, thankfully. On the other hand, I did find this wine a little cloying -- it could have benefited from a little more freshness and acidity.

Thankfully intact cork, nothing off. Still tight out of the gate, tannins to go for a bit further in this bottle. Surprisingly ruby colored instead of the brick I was suspecting, but well integrated after an hour decant. Great with flat iron steak roast with blue cheese butter and wine reduction sauce. With this particular bottle, no indication that this must be consumed now.

Decanted. Initially closed but opened up nicely after an hour or so. Dark. Good fruit. Full-bodied; smooth. Medium length finish. Plenty of life left. Good match with T-bone steak.
Excellent Tignanello from one time 'vintage of the century'. Two glasses from Coravin/rest of bottle PnP over course of ninety minutes later the same day. Ruby colour. Good nose. Medium finish. Excellent with charcuterie. Somewhat overwhelmed by steak and bearnaise. Great wine. No need to hurry with this.

Opened but NOT decanted for 2hrs+ .. great nose from the start but kept getting better ..
Found out from previous bottles that decanting looses a bit of depth on the nose and palate ... Far better off to just open and let breathe, especially with older vintages of Tig.
Cork was in perfect shape.
Lots of dark fruits on the palate with fairly smooth tannins ... very balanced.
A great rustic sangiovese 'Tig' taste. A absolute pleasure to drink!
Probably one of the best Tig's we've ever tasted ... Drinking extremely well!
Kept getting better and better.
Paired with prime rib, wasabi infused mashed potatoes, sauteed mushrooms & au jus.
Unbelievable bottle! IMO easily many years left! 96+

I was expecting a bomb shell, but this one felt a little tired. Came around after another hour with some cherry, mushroom and forest woods, but not the same level as before. Chalk this one up to bottle variation. Still a great wine, but at the end of its life.

working with wine 2016 seminar 1 - tuscany (Hilton Hotel, Sydney): Medium minus intensity aromas that are muted and slightly musty, sour cherry, spice, leather, mushroom, forest floor and very slight oxidation. With more time the fruit steps out of the shadows. In the mouth its shockingly young with primary fruit, plentiful juiciness and tight tannins. Still a bit full on despite it's age. I can't imagine how unapproachable this must have been in it's youth. Hmm. the nose was exceedingly misleading.

Davyd's Birthday Excuse for a celebration 2016 (Kallang Way Extra Space): Tasted blind. Poured into decanter and drank over 1 hour. Appearance is clear, deep intensity, ruby colour. Legs. Nose is clean, medium intensity, with aromas of scented wood, dark red cherries, blackberries, sweet spices. Developing. On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol, fine high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of blackcurrant, blackberries, black cherries, dark red cherries, sweet spices. Long finish. I guessed this was a 10 year old SuperTuscan. Very good quality. Initially very tight, this needed to be coaxed out in the decanter before showing. Still feels like this could age another 3-4 years well. No hurry to drink up for me, fruits still kicking here. But unlikely to improve much further. 80% Sangiovese, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon for this vintage.

Base neck fill. Cork stained .75 inch. Decanted for two hours; light sediment. Garnet color with bricking. Pleasant nose of dark berries, smoke and graphite. Decanted for 20mins and drank over the following 1.5hrs. Decided to drink this tonight so that we could compare it to the '97 Solaia we drank 2 weeks ago. Tonight's Tig was nicely aromatic, had good freshness but was leaner than the solaia. Tannins mostly resolved with acidity a bit on the high side. Overall a solid wine but does not hit the heights of greatness. Clearly a step down from the '97 Solaia.

Antinori Winemaker Dinner (Scarpetta, Beverly Hills): A bit more advanced than I expected, a fairly sudden development which makes me wonder how much staying power the wine has. A gentle bouquet of herbs, sweet fruit and leather. Fully resolved on the palate, more finesse than power. Some barnyard stuff amidst the sweet fruit. Based on this bottle, I'd drink up.

Was surprised as this didn't show much sign of being old. Still firm tannins and a really nice pencil lead and black fruit thing. Nice acidity. As it warmed up, it lost some of its structure and started to show a little bit of funk.

This showed almost nothing at first, but after a while starting exhibiting a soft, round. light profile that still wasn;t too promising. But the wine gradually put on weight over the course of a few hours, and turned into a marvelous drink. Stunning aromatics and great balance of grace and power. Mature and showing beautifully.

Tasted blind. Spicy scents mingle with fruit leathers, rhubarb, and nutmeg. Thyme and rosemary dance on the edges of the nose as well. Medium bodied, fruit leather palate (cherry). Hints of maraschino cherries and baked apple pie as well. Complex. Old books on the finish. This is really nice and calming. If you are having a stressful day, drink this wine.

Dinner with friends (At home): Decanted for an hour, poured back into bottle and left to stand for another hour. This (relatively) longer period given for the wine to breathe helped the wine show better versus the last time I had it about 6mths ago. Restrained and very well balanced with good transparency. Tannins are very fine. More "filled out" and less angular than my last experience with this wine. A joy to drink this fully mature Tig and a great start to our dinner.

Medium red with apparent amber bricking. Needs a few hours to show off a nose of tobacco, cherry, earth, and a slight green component (bell pepper?). Good attack, somewhat leaning toward acidity through out, so a bit out of balance. Ends with noticeable, but integrated tannins. This works with well with a grilled steak. By day 2 it had fallen on hard times. Cellared correctly since release.

Much thinner than the previous bottle. The first few sips made me think of Schioppettino; red fruit and black pepper aromas.
With more air a slightly sweet plum note could be tasted along with a generic, but very fine, old world profile. I will definitely buy more if I get the opportunity.

Darker garnet color. Nose of red currant, dried cherry, earth, and fennel. Integrated layers of currant, dark plum, mulberry, and a hint of blaring red fruit on the palate, perhaps reflecting the Sangiovese component. Low-to-moderate acidity and smoothed tannins leading to a long, harmonious finish of earth, plum, and grip. A fine pairing with steak, even with its relatively small percentage of Cabernet grapes. Last of our three bottles and perhaps the best.

Slow ox'ed for 1.5hrs, then poured into a decanter and drunk over the following 1.5hrs. Bottle was in good condition. At 17yrs of age, this wine still has a nice freshness to it. Very transparent and elegant with finely grained tannins. What was disappointing was that the wine seemed a little angular and the fruit has thinned out a bit. In my opinion, this is slightly past its peak. Will look to drink my remaining bottles soon.

2014 New York Wine Experience Trip; 10/14/2014-10/21/2014 (New York City, NY): A blend of 80% Sangiovese, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc, this medium red/garnet wine shows bright red currant fruit, supported by cinnamon, cocoa, loamy earth and dried herbs. On the palate it is medium-bodied, fleshy, freshly acidic and seamlessly alcoholic. The tannins are now nearly resolved. Solid in the middle and lengthy on the back end, it is currently fully mature and drinking beautifully. This wine should continue to provide pleasure for another 6-8 years. Drink now-2022.

Upon opening this was simple and subdued in a wonderful way. There were flavors of cherry and leather but delivered quite softly (minimal to moderate acidity). I can't help but think that bigger is not necessarily better.
At about 45 minutes it became fuller with a distinct spiced plum note along with some fleshy cherry.
And 1.5 hours later this is full and front and center. The texture has become more viscous and on top of all other flavors mentioned a sandalwood note is now in the mix.
The final sip offered up (besides moderate sediment between the teeth), licorice/anise and all those other tasty flavors stated earlier.
If I get my hands on another bottle, I'd open it now but about an hour before dinner and see what 2+ hours might do for it.

Dark in Color. Nose of herbs (ricola), coffee, leather. Initially quite tannic and dry with hardly any fruit left. Opens up After 45min. Mature. Drink over the next few years

From DMag, decanted for 2 hrs, excellent expression of ripe sangiovese with the 20% cabernet providing the backbone for a long life (for a tuscan wine). Excellent balance, smoothe and silky, continued to develop nicely in the glass. Drink now.

Nose: cherries, balsamic, hints of cedar and red berries. A little closed on even now. Very long, fresh and appetising. Luscious and fresh. Only 1/3 new oak but still quite oaky for a sangiovese blend, perhaps too oaky.

80% San Giovese, 20% Cab Sauvignon. A bit of a disappointment given the vintage and the wine. Poor price performance. I would recommend to drink Don Tommaso from Principe Corsini instead with 80% San Giovese, 20% Merlot which only costs a fraction of the price ( EUR 27) and is much better.

Definitely showing some evolution, not as vibrant! Herbs and licorice are quite potent on the nose, some plums and sour cherries also. Nice textured mouth feel, some black cherries with smooth tannins. A bit on the short side on ending!

Looking at the wide range of tasting impressions on this wine, I suspect that in addition to storage condition, and bottle variation - which from my little experience seems a bigger issue for some Italian producer than for wines from most other regions - decanting time also plays a major role here. This was not decanted but opened with pasta and then drank over about 3h. In neck fill. Cork in good condition with about a third soaked. A remarkably clear or even brilliant medium garnet with only the translucent rim hinting at the age of this wine. My first impression was that the bottle might be bad as the wine was showing an unusual sweetness and a hint of wet cardboard, but after 45 min it came together nicely. A nose with sous-bois, and earth followed by a wonderful and very bright expression of rather youthful, and more red than dark, fruit. Well delineated and almost as clear as the color in the glass. With increasing decanting time the medium tannins however took over on the palate and rendered the impression of a wine that has not yet found its balance. Medium finish. Having now had Tignanello from very good Tuscan vintages between 89-04, I am yet to find a truly convincing Tig. Having said that while I find Tigs usually very solid and well made / balanced but rather dull, this was unusual as it showed moments of brilliance but was overall not balanced. This bottle was definitively not tired (as others have experience) but the risk of drying out in 5-10 years is probably bigger than the possibility of achieving greatness with more bottle age.

Dried fruit flavors reminscent of cherries and dark berries; tar, dried herbs; fine tannins but not many left. Good balance and medium structure. Overrated.

I had great expectations for this wine given the reputation of the vintage. But this disappointed. The nose was all musty, stewed fruits. It blew off after a bit, but even then it was disappointing. Very dry on the palate, no real fruit present.

Brilliant wine drinking right in its prime. Reminiscent of a great Bordeaux, this showed incredible complexity, nuance and silkiness. Fantastic stuff, and was consensus WOTN amidst some pretty heavy hitting reds...

Cork on the first bottle...the second was much better but the fruit has faded and don't see how this will get much better. On the decline. '97 was a good year and i am not sure what happened to this perennial favorite of ours. drink or make a great Italian sauce!

OK, but not up to what I expected when I bought the case. Not a single bottle has lived up to the Pro ratings. Perhaps the case was damaged during shipping somewhere along the line.......but too late to sort that out. Probably the most disappointing case of "good stuff" I have ever bought. I have a few bottles from a later vintage that do live up to the high Pro ratings.

Deep ruby color. Some rubber tire mixed with classic black current aromas. Deep, serious and complex. Fabulous wine - classically proportioned yet sweet. The explosive attack tasted exactly like it smells. Iron and shoe leather emerge after thirty minutes. Perfectly mature and substantially better than past bottles. Fine. (94)

The nose is full, really full with peanut butter (!), some hints of smoke and earth and some tobacco. Mature palate, with Sangiovese cherries, mature plums, herbs and quite good balance between the fruit and Tuscan trademark acid. Dry medium length finish. I was expecting more from this wine in this vintage. Still, very good!

Medium nose of pure rich fruit with some secondary characteristics which are mix of cedar, black forest fruit and pepper. Palate matches the nose, but is slightly drying before a nice medium finish. I enjoy this a lot, but I am not sure it is better than 5 years ago.

Tobacco, earth, roasted meats, plums, and dried cherry. This bottle was much more evolved than when I last drank it over two years ago. The fruit not as lush or concentrated. Cocoa, coffee, cassis, and plums in the mouth, smokey, and this built in the mouth. Long finish, tannins slightly drying in the finish.

The filing-level of the bottle was top shoulder/into the neck, the cork was in perfect condition. I did not decant, but opened the wine two hours in advance, then slowly drank one fourth of the bottle over a period of another two hours, re-corked it and drank the remainder the next day with lunch. The wine offered an earthy nose, with raisins, dried cherry, plum, game, spices, some menthol and Pulmoll cough drops. On the palate the medium-bodied wine showed dried cherry, red currant, herbs, earthy notes and a hint of coffee, paired with medium-plus acidity and tannin and very good length. I actually liked the wine better the second day as despite being dryer it seemed rounder, more balanced and overall more elegant on day two, with smoother acidity. The wine has peaked and is just starting to dry out; drink through 2015.

This bottle seemed a bit tired...less vigorous that the previous one I had from the same stash. This was served at a lunch with some rich Italian fare, and so the higher acid on the profile of this bottle integrated well with the meal. But I was disappointed at the degree to which the fruit had dropped off. Maybe just the bottle? Not sure. I have another that I'll slate for near-term consumption.

Dinner with xhoser: old & new world comparisons (Adelle's, Wheaton): Garnet color. The bouquet features violets, sandalwood, red currants and just a hint of leather. Well-balanced. Has balance and depth with red fruit- currants, sandalwood and spice with hints of earth. Finishes well. This had been decanted briefly off its sediment and rebottled. Drinking very well now with a long life ahead. 92+ pts.

Opened by Jcubed. 80% Sangiovese and 20% cab Sauvignon. Jolly rancher on the nose. Elegant at this age. Cherry, violet and earthy black dirt. For old world lovers. This is the 2nd time I have had this wine and it is significantly better now than when I had it in it's youth 10 years ago. Great vintage. Also thought this was far better than the 2000 Tig that I had from a 3L 9 years ago. Don't think this is fading soon. 93 points.

Dark core with crimson rim, expressive nose with plums, sour cherries, cassis, violets, tobacco, leather, sandalwood, smoke, sweet spices, with just small hints of animal sweat, and damp forest floor. Balanced well integrated mid to full bodied wine, with notes of sour cherries on the attack, dark fruits mixed with dark chocolate on the mid-palate. The finish is quite persistent, smooth rounded tannins, spices, roasted meat flavors, with creamy vanilla.

Perfect level into the neck. Lovely medium ruby colour. Complex nose with berries, tobacco, leather. Great elegant tannins, very smooth and fresh, some fruit coming through on the palate, reminds me of a very good Bordeaux, very long finish, still years of life ahead.

The last one available to me, so sorry to see it go. Aromas of dark fruit and tobacco. Taste of ripe plums and cassis. Tanins well integrated. This may last a few more years before starting to decline, but is as good as it's going to get, which is excellent.

A beautiful, mature bottle. Dark aromatics of leather and earth followed by a silky mouth feel. Flavors are, again, leather, earth and mature black cherry. The wine teeters between being Brunello and Bordeaux though, due to its age, it had some raisiny character I associate with Amarone. All in all, a marvelous wine. Sorry to see the last of these go.

Decanted 1 hr before pouring. Nice lively ruby color with only a hint of orange. Intense complex nose, with black fruit jam (I would say also somehow exotic) spices (mocha, tobacco, anise) and dried flowers. At palate it is balanced, with beautiful, well resolved, tannins, and a nice acidity, close to be a dissonant note. Long finish.

From magnum. This wine was a beauty. Its early bright red fruit character has slowly been replaced with more mature notes of forest floor and leather. Its medium bodied frame covers the entire palate with mature flavors and a juicy stingy streak of acidity, and has tamed its tannin structure . This is why I age wine. Excelelnt wine that is nowhere near its decline.

Decanted for two hours. Enjoyed over the next two. At this point in the wines' life, it seems to need time to breathe to soften the edges and liven the fruit. The first few sips after the decant seemed a little bit sharp and listless, but after some air it rounded out quite nicely.
All that said, it is a positive drinking experience but there is not enough in this wine to justify the price tag. It still has life left, but some wines just may have more to offer in their youth.

From 750ml. Decanted and served almost immediately. Colour was light red with brown hue. On the nose liquorice and dried fruits. Some Tuscan earthiness. Palate refined and medium length, very reserved for a high proportion of Sangiovese. No blockbuster but with plenty of elegance which maybe is typical of the vintage. Pretty but not profound, like an overly aromatic but lightweight Bordeaux. Probably a year or so past peak. Don't hold, drink.

Pretty beautiful nose of olive, herb, cassis, mineral, dry tobacco, suggests maturity. Palate has some nice acidity, a savoriness of roasted meats, licorice, but a tart, tannic, and slightly coarse woodiness to the dried fruit on the palate. Improved with air and became more balanced and giving but I'd say this probably isn't going to get a whole lot better.

Direct fronm the store to my cellar sitting there patiently. Resolved but in great shape. Improved in the carafe and over dinner (lamb) and totally held it's own with the lamb but just a dream with imported parmesan reggiano. Can't put it down and the last glass will be my dessert for the night. Delicious factor all over from nose to palate. Some need to store their stuff better methinks.

PnP. Resolved tannins, initially a little sharp but a few minutes in the glass it softens up. Great mouthfeel, velvety. Juice is mouthwatering. Super easy to drink. Light to medium complexity. This bottle suggests a drinking window till 2014. It won't improve and perhaps past peak. Very enjoyable.

Served blind, it seemed to be a grenache driven wine, and on tasting, definitely Chateauneuf, with one slight problem: The bagged bottle was not the right shape! Later, the acid structure came out, and I correctly guessed Tuscan, but thought it might be more like 1988-1990 vintage. Nice wine, ready to drink.

This wine is finally beginning to reach maturity. There is still fruit on the nose and palate, quite intense flavours but the tannins are resolved, The nose offers dark red fruit, olive, pine, wood and leather, quite complex. The palate is balanced and finish moderately long. I think the wine has another five years , maybe more to fully mature.

Purchased on release. Slightly muddy ruby color with a somewhat muted nose. On the palate this has not aged well (unlike many other vintages of this wine) and is rather thin and alcoholic. Yet another example of the '97 vintage in Tuscany being totally overrated.

Opened for Gene. Medium garnet. Intense and complex nose of plum, tobacco, licorice, soil, cherries and sawn oak. Low+ acidity on the palate which is plush and expansive and a real sense of uncoutous and ripeness without being heavy. Tannins are still there, slightly grainy and bitter, with blueberry on the lovely and slightly warm, very long finish. This is excellent and was a great wine.

Purple with ruby highlights. Nose of stony iodine, cherry, black plum, fennel, earth. Austere yet velvety texture revealing layers of tart cherry, black currant, meaty notes, and hints of pepper. Wine Cellar Food & Wine - Italy Super Tuscan (Auslese, Cape Town): (Tasted Blind): A vibrant cherry colour toward some browning fleck on the rim. AEG Drank with rare duck breast and duck confit with a sauce with truffle butter. Double decanted about two hours before serving. The wine was fresh, balanced, fruit-filled and matched the food perfectly. The sangiovese added a pleasant note, different from the usual Bordeaux blends. The flavors included a bit of cherry, some leather, with soft tannins. I was expecting the worst after reading the prior reviews and was delighted that both bottles were consistently delightful.

Ok I was wrong. This wine at this time and age simply needs a good 3-4 hours of decanting to show its colors, when at that point its shows a nice level of personality with good concentration and balance. Took me 4 bottles, but I am now at last happy with this wine. Needs time though.. tasty wine right now.

Very barnyard and saddle leather after opening, this mitigated with air. Nose of leather, barnyard (dropping with time), dried mint and oak/wood. Tannins may be out of balance with the wine and I think this wine is probably heading down based on my last two bottles. Sour cherry, tobacco leaf, lowish pH (almost sour). DRINK NOW. Dries out and loses weight and flavor with air. Warm to serving temp (65-67F) before opening to preserve the fruit since it does not drink well at cellar temp on opening.

I think this wine is in a dip or perhaps approaching its usable life. This bottle was not overly attractive. Nose of cigar box, earth and sour cherries, the flavors are qutie lean. Tannins that are more apparent and agressive than I would like to see at this point in it's life, drying and not attractive. A bit sour (low acidity), I mean it does have a pretty heavy sangio component. Flavors include sour cherry, hints of raspberry, boysenberry and earth. Very good, maybe even excellent, but not what it was a two years ago. Air did not seem to improve the wine this time.

Not an overwhelming wine but decent wine at this stage. I think and hope it will get better. It is certainly past its fruit stage but has not fully developed the complexity I think it is capable of. Forward nose, damp wood (but not musty), dark ripe fruit, leather. Tannins are soft and the wine has good acidity. Well extracted and mouth coating. Good finish.

Lovely lovely lovely. Tart cherries, leather, chocolate, herbs, and a pepperry tannic grip. More elegant than powerful. Really came alive with ragu bolognese. Also, parmegiano reggiano and a pork loin butterfiled, stuffed with a paste made from olive oil, garlic, rosemary, sage, salt, and pepper then roasted over an oaken fire. A splendid food wine. Wonderful, but I fear we consumed the bottle before it really started to show what it was about. We opened the bottle right when we got to the restaurant, it was largely closed for the first 45 minutes, but begin and slower open up over the next hour. At the two hour mark, it really started to expand, the fruit developed and came into focus, the nose, of earth and spice, really blossomed. Dark red fruit, coffee, plum, very nice. Overall body was a little lighter than I would have hoped, and the finish was medium in length. I'd like to let my next bottle side for 2 hours before trying it next time.

Darkly stained cork bottom and dark red wine. Intense earthy nose. Dark fruits and plum. Cedar and coffee. Great mouth feel and very long finish. Drank slowly over an hour and did not decant.

pre auction tasting (union league club, chicago IL): nose: beautifully expressive nose that is wide open and ready for business with dark red cherries, lots of herbs and spice tones intermingling, red and black currants, and some wild berry tones to give it a bit of a modern touch
taste: wonderfully smooth with black licorice, dark red cherries, tasty notes of herbal spices, and lots of red and black currants work together in a well melded and ready to go style
overall: this is in a perfect place right now. Supremely balanced with great aromatics that just fill the glass and are very aesthetically pleasing and very sumptuous. Great smooth and polished feel that shows off the sangiovese with a dark red cherry attack and interwoven red and black currant finish

Edward Roberts International Pre-Auction Tasting (Union League Club of Chicago): Sampled at the Edward Roberts International Pre-Auction Tasting at the Union League Club of Chicago. Bright red. Pinkish aromas. Tutti frutti. Very unique and I would say eccentric profile as a whole. Bright almost jammy nose -- also reflected on the palate. Jammy dark red fruit. Moderate body. Oaky with a slightly vegetal component on the back end. Moderate finish that is lighter yet showing nice length and complexity. A very different Old World experience. I like it a lot.

This was the last wine of 10 served blind, so my palate was fatigued. White limestone and minerals, a little strawberry on the nose. Still dense and solidly colored - not really showing any sign of age. Still seemed pretty tight and closed on the palate. Don't know if it is still young, or just not that giving. There are hints that there may be more there.

At Quattro, Miami Beach, David Ehrenreich's wine. decanted fro 1-1/2 hrs befroe dinner. Kept evolving over 3 hours at dinner. An intense sangiovese cab blend. It keeps getting better. Now I understand why its price keeps rising. Will wait on my last 2 bottles.

1997 Supertuscan/Italian retrospective + 1990 Bollinger R.D. (Dirk's): Ruby red color with no signs of age. Strawberry, violets, black cherry, with a touch of herb and some wood on the nose. Bright fruit with great acidity and gripping tannins, this is still very young and could age another 10 years. Very similar to, but not as good as the 2004, in my opinion.

Tasted April 9, 2008. Opened and served immediately. Dark garnet color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of coffee, mocha, plum and melted black licorice. Flavors of black berries, cherries, red currants and some bitters on the finish. Medium acidity, medium to firm tannins, medium to full body. Drink or hold.

This is an excellent wine right now, but i am hoping in a few years will be better. It had a very impressive fruit concentration and balance, but lacks in personality (I have a hard time believing anyone could identify this wine in a blind tasting). Everything is there and done very well to enjoy. solid offering. will try again in 2010.

Singapore again (Colin's flat, Singapore): Stinky nose - not farmyard but...... Sangiovese fustiness so left for 3 hours. Fustiness had gone; soft burnt wood, smokey. Structured palate, meat, leather and a little fuminess.

Good deep but slightly murky color. Lovely nose of black cherries, cassis and leather. Medium-bodied with delicious spicy black cherry flavors with hints of wintergreen and horsehide. A nice, soft mouth-feel but with a bit of harshness on the finish. I think this wine is still young and not showing much secondary flavor development but its balanced and should improve. 90+

French Bakery BYO 1990's Tuscan IGT Dinner; 1/8/2008-1/10/2008 (French Bakery, 1023 Kane Concourse, Bay Harbor Islands, FL): Roberta & David's wine. WOTF 5 votes to 4 over David's 97 Rocatto. No brett, but classic wet earth notes, and evolved beautifully in the glass to pair perfectly with Maria's exceptional antipasti, which featured an exceptional Spek, and smokey roast peppers. I think, I preferred the Rocatto, because of its heavier Sangiovese component, which I think paired better with the Antipasti.

Consumed at a local restaurant with Prime Rib and mixed vegetables. Drank from the bottle almost immediately after opening. The color was dark and dense, light nose, great taste of mixed berries, vanilla with a hint of leather; well structured, great initial burst of flavor that held on through the mid palate. Long, perfect finish. Reminded me more of a Napa Caymus then a bold Super Tuscan. I can only imagine how this wine would have continued to blossom if decanted and left to breathe for a couple of hours.

This wine is a palate wine. The nose is not really that attractive or outstanding, dominated by dry cherries and minerals. The palate impression, though, is outstanding. Intensely flavored covering the entire palate with delicious red fruits and tremendous minerality. This is medium bodied, intensely flavorful and offers an incredibly long finish with a dash of juicy acidity. As most always, this is a winner.

First bottle of Tignanello we have tried. Dark garnet color. Nose was slow to open, but after 3 hours sent up scents of sundried tomato, cherry, and spices. Palate was also very tight for 3 hours but then opened up to show flavors of dusty cherry, plum, and meaty notes with plenty of unctious body and verve. Finish was nice and of moderate length. Low acid, with plenty of tannins still. If anything, this is on the young side.

Dinner party with Roberta & David Errenreich, and Joyce and Steve Rapaport. Paired with Ellen's Chicken Cacciatore, and preceded the 97 Banfi Poggio alla Mura, (a cup of which was used in the cacciatore). This wine has been an enigma to me in the past, and I finally figured it out. After I decanted it in the morning, I tasted it unaerated, and Vinturi aerated. It was too tight unaerated, and too flabby aerated. I then aerated half the wine and rebottled the two halves. At dinner it was perfect, with anise notes, slight wet earth, some minerality. Much better than my prior experiences, and perhaps justifying its price appreciation.

Nose of pipe tobacco and cherries. Lean and lithe, with a long snaking finish. Would like to see a little more depth on the midpalate, but this may come with a little further bottle age.

(at Café Troia – Baltimore) Lovely garnet robe. Beefy nose, mixed with a cool cassis and floral note. Very good tonight – still zippy with a lively finish. Maturity conversations were all over the board – I think it is pretty good right now. This gained in depth over the evening. (90)

Very thin and alcoholic upon initial opening (30 min). Turned into a beautiful red berry, concentrated drink after that. Not overly compex but very elegant. At its peak although at the end of its "glory".

Dark restaurant, so no comment on color. But after 30 minutes, this started to sing. Red cherry, earth, hint of anise-like spice, and meatiness on the nose. Soft and seductive on palate, with just outstanding texture. The finish was a bit short, but other than that, this was outstanding.

Initially, this wine was so reticent on the nose I was a little worried. A taste upon opening put my mind at rest. Initially very little, then a delayed explosion of red fruit made me think my idea to breathe this wine a few hours was a good one. Later, a bright explosion of cherry, a little plum and sweet wood and spices opened up in this wine. The nose became absolutely captivating at the end. still significant tannins and fresh acidity made this a great food wine. If I'd tasted this wine blind, I'd never have thought there was any Cabernet in it. Great stuff, regardless. Still has a lot of life ahead.

One of the best sangiovese containing wine I have ever tried. At first it seemed a little thin but after 5 minutes it began to open up, revealing a nose of cedar, blueberries and sweet oak. Flavors of the same blueberry with bing cherries, oak and violets. Tannins were still there and probably will outlast the remaining fruit. Drink up, I think, before the fruit fades and tannins predominate. 15 second finish.

Good wine, yet very, very international. Not to be recognized as a Tuscan wine in any way and more Cabernet like than anything else. This style can be had in Chile or Argentina for half the price....

A superb nose and attack of sour cheries with hints of black fruit, leather, tobacco and bramble/sloe. On the mid palate there are subtle notes of plum and there's a decent finish with good tannin and acid. This is a medium bodied wine that has evolved really nicely over the night... there's a smooth transition through the palate and it's drinking fantastically well now.

bottle was cellared from release. it was a great disappointment, however, esp after reading others notes. collor was beautiful deep garnet. the wine was totally shut down, however. it tasted tannic and somewhat sour. fruit just never came through. two hours after opening it was a little better with some caramel flavors beginning to come through but the pieces had still not come together.

i just read the hilarious account regarding the wine escapades of our own scott and lettie in italy, so i thought i'd rummage around and find some super tuscans. last night it was the 2001 solaia (no formal note, but i enjoyed it), and now tonight i paired the tignanello with some angel hair spaghetti.
splash decanted, because i recalled my last go 'round with this being a bit tight. it's still somewhat tannic, but powerful and full of life this time. blackberries, blackcherries, black currant. i really feel that despite it's minority percentage, the cab dominates. the fruit is able to provide a long finish, and it's easy to recommend this wine.

Deep, dark violet/ruby/blood color, with edges that give the impression of perhaps just a 5 yr old wine. Very fragrant and multifaceted, moderately high toned but sweet, fruit gradually becomes more dried in character (fig, date, raisin) with exposure to air, also notes of flowers, smoldering cigar. In the mouth, ripe but quite dry, then sweetens with about an hour of air time. Long finish, with tannins strong but also fairly lush.

Color is garnet with a hint of bricking. Nose shows cherry, dust, herbs, and a hint of mineral. On the palate, dusty cherry at the fore balanced by spice, herbs, and judiciously applied oak. Tannins are smooth and a good streak of acidity keeps the wine lively. Overall, a very nice super Tuscan. Thanks to Bill Wood for bringing this nice Italian.

Deb's birthday- '02 kongsgaard,'00 longoria, '97 tig, '96 dunn and more (home and the french laundry): I used to have half a case of this wine and have only two bottles left; i drank the other ones way too early!!! This is beautiful sangiovese (i think there is some cab in there too)- a big, lovely wine with hints of oak and forward raspberry red fruit but balanced with nice tannins- this was decanted for about two hours aas well and it is much better integrated than 4 or 5 years ago- very concentrated; long finish.

Tignanello Vertical Tasting and Dinner (Establishment Restaurant, Manchester): Again decanted around two hours previously. There is much more cabernet sauvignon immediately evident on the nose than in the 2000, and there's a very curious, but not unattractive, definite hint of green peas. A very deep, complex nose: there are some hints of marzipanny almonds, a bit of talc again and a touch of spirit right at the end. On the palate, it's very precise, focussed and multi-layered. Very complex and full, yet also very elegant indeed. It has a splendid tannic structure and is opening up in the glass, though it remains much tighter than the 2000. This is likely to be much longer-lived than the 2000, and all in all, is probably a better wine than the 2000. But for pure, sybaritic pleasure now, I prefer the 2000. Excellent.

Consumed with take-out from Mark's Duck House. Opened at noon, not decanted. Not quite classic Tig, more of a fruit bomb than usual- nose of dusty ripe cherries and plums with some rosemary. Palate is rich and well balanced with a lot of extraction- almost, but not quite to the point of overdoing it. Finish is quite long. Good stuff- no hurry to drink.

Super Tuscans at Campisi's: Blind Red 3 - Medium color with moderate translucence. Smells a little floral and peppery. Prickly acidity on the attack. Medium-bodied and softer in the mid-palate. Light. Some evidence of wood on the nose, but mostly light black fruit. Where is this from? Doesn't compare well with the 1999 I had on Saturday.

Dark red. Notes of leather, figs, smoke, and wet forest. The wine possesses decent structure with good amounts of ripe fruit, a medium body, and nice definition and balance. Tasted unblinded at Region restaurant. Bottle provided by Ken Johnson. Bright disc. Deep ruby/garnet robe with red rim. Clean nose, showing moderately intense aromas of black cherry, dark chocolate, tar and marzipan. Full-bodied on the palate, with low-to-medium acidity and big sweet tannins. Long, smooth finish. Delicious now, but should improve with additional time in the bottle.

As a result of LOVING the 1990, I purchased 3 bottles of the 97 which I am told will be great. My notes for the 90: Deep purple/black in color with divine aromas of prunes, chocolate and carob. HUGE concentration of fruity flavors (blackberry) with an incredibly long finish, but with pretty high levels of tannic still. The wine needs 3-4 more years to reach its peek. GREAT now but will be HUGE in a few years.

Frankie brought this wine which is made with international varietals (not sure of the exact blend). More powerful than the Fontodi. It was not decanted until the tasting. I tried it twice. When 1st opened it was closed, harsh and not showing much. 2 hours later it had opened somewhat to reveal berry, licorice and herbal notes. Still not to its full potential though. There was some talk that this might be a flawed bottle but I did not think so. 90-91.

Single glass from last bottle of 12. Used Coravin. 30 minutes air at most and consumed within an hour. Super smooth. Full-bodied. Great wine from 'vintage of the century' (when that still meant something).

13,5% alcohol.

Tonight's Tig was nicely aromatic, had good freshness but was leaner than the solaia. Tannins mostly resolved with acidity a bit on the high side. Overall a solid wine but does not hit the heights of greatness. Clearly a step down from the '97 Solaia.

In contrast to the previous bottle tasted a few years ago, this one was amazing! Nice cherry and cassis fruit in combination with mature tones of pipe tobacco. Refreshing acidity and a long finish with lots of complexity.

Its medium bodied frame covers the entire palate with mature flavors and a juicy stingy streak of acidity, and has tamed its tannin structure . This is why I age wine. Excelelnt wine that is nowhere near its decline.

All that said, it is a positive drinking experience but there is not enough in this wine to justify the price tag. It still has life left, but some wines just may have more to offer in their youth.

A vibrant cherry colour toward some browning fleck on the rim.
The bouquet is tree bark, liquorice, truffle, whispers of tobacco, and some sauvage. Inviting.
The palate is rich with a thick texture with sour cherry notes dancing across the palate is joined by liquorice, leather, spice and wood smoke. A chalky undertone leads to firm, structured tannins and a lingering finish.
Blend of 80 Sangiovese, 15 CS, 5 CF.

A Providence, Rhode Island Offline (Blue Grotto, Cigar Master's): We started with the 1997 Antinori, Tignanello, which was gorgeous with dark raspberries, flowery herbal tea, and road tar showing on the nose. The palate was luscious and rich, yet finessed with blackberry jam and plum with citrus sprits and a hint of wood showing through. The finish was long, as red fruits began to show. This bottle was one of my favorites but shut down after being opened for about five hours.

80% sangiovese, 15% cabernet sauvignon, 5% cabernet franc.
i just read the hilarious account regarding the wine escapades of our own scott and lettie in italy, so i thought i'd rummage around and find some super tuscans. last night it was the 2001 solaia (no formal note, but i enjoyed it), and now tonight i paired the tignanello with some angel hair spaghetti.
splash decanted, because i recalled my last go 'round with this being a bit tight. it's still somewhat tannic, but powerful and full of life this time. blackberries, blackcherries, black currant. i really feel that despite it's minority percentage, the cab dominates. the fruit is able to provide a long finish, and it's easy to recommend this wine.

Excellent.
