Introduction

A few people were going to a store tasting in the late afternoon and asked if anyone wanted to join them for dinner afterward at Craftsman. Well, as luck would have it a couple of us were open and we ended up with nice little group of 4. Our service was outstanding and the food was excellent tonight. Wines faired quite well too!

Flight 1 (1 Note)

  • 2010 Domaine Louis Michel Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

Light gold color. PNP, drank 2 glasses over 90 minutes. This was quite bright on the nose, showing some flashy white peach and ripe melon that gives way to the more classic citrus, zest aromas that build with the requisite minerality. The palate is lively, with good acidity, green tree fruit, pear, and Jonagold apple that also has plenty of lemon and line with some citrus peel as well, sea shore mineral, and crisp refreshing finish that lingers. Thiis in a very good place and should evolve and at the very least hold for 5-10 years plus.

Flight 2 (1 Note)

  • 2009 Meßmer Spätburgunder Rosé Sekt Brut 90 Points

    Germany, Pfalz

Medium orange brick red color. PNP, drank 2 glasses over an hour. This had some nice red fruits on the nose, red berries, watermelon, floral, and becomes earthy as I had remembered from my first experience. The palate shows cherry, red berry, earthy, mildly leesy richness, a bit fleshy and a medium finish. This had the earthiness that caught m attention in the first place and didn't disappoint. Different in a good way.

Flight 3 (2 Notes)

  • 2000 Domaine de Marcoux Châteauneuf-du-Pape 91 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Medium dark red color, mildly bricked 5mm margin. PNP, drank 2 glasses over 3 hours plus. There's some nice red fruit on the nose, fresh herbs, licorice, just a little savory character, and it develops some kirsch brandied cherries as it sits in glass for 30 minutes. It seemed to get a bit raisiny after an hour or more in glass but was refreshed to where it was with a repour. The palate also shows the red fruit side, licorice, medium grained tannins with some persistence, a bit of mushroom, medium full bodied and pretty finessed, sour cherry and a medium finish. I find that raisin y character emerging on the palate too after an hour. Makes me think this is a drink me now over a short time frame both out of the bottle and over the long haul. 91(+?)pts.

  • 2006 Fattoria di Fèlsina Berardenga Fontalloro 93 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

Very dark/purple red color. Aerated into glasses from bottle; drank 2 glasses over 3 hours. Well, there's plenty to like here, the black fruit is silky and seductive with creme de cassis, very dark raspberry, huckleberry, smoke, and earthy minerality. The palate has a rich and energetic appeal that seems lifted, black fruits that are layered nicely with a silky texture and appealing round tannins that make you notice them but grab you, dusty, spiced long finish. Really nice, youthful, but clearly approachable, primary but oh so tasty. This can last a long time, but don't be afraid to crack a bottle. 93(+)pts.

Flight 4 (1 Note)

  • 2005 Clos Jean Loupiac 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Entre-Deux-Mers, Loupiac

Dark gold color. PNP, drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. The nose is very good, with apricot, florals, Charles says its just like chestnut blossoms, with a bit of orange and spice. The palate is not quite to the level of the nose, shows the apricot, sweetness, and texture, but the finish as has been the case get a bit spicy and a little sharp/edgy. Still a very good wine and a great QPR. I'd gladly drink this anytime. Probably best over the short term.
