Introduction

I wasn't sure what to expect, but Jonathan cranked out some of the best food I have ever had - amazing meats and sausage.

  • 2005 Taittinger Champagne Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut 91 Points

    France, Champagne

    Smokey nose with lemon, spice, smoked paprika - sharp. Almost sweet on the palate - spicy, soft, sharp spices and lemon in finish. A little more brown. Again, too ripe for me: the 05 is at least a step behind the 04, and at least 2 steps behind the great 02. Nose - 4.5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 15.5/20.

    Nose is rich and has lemon, but it is showing subdued. The palate again shows lemon good acid, nuts, and richness. Just delicious. Nose - 4.5/6, Palate - 5-5.5/6, Finish - 5-5.5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1-1.5/2 = 15.5-17/20.

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

    September 2013 disgorgement. Very oxidized style nose with apple cider, nuts, chalk, pear, orange peel. The palate is a Wow! explosive cider, pear, lemon, chalk. Perfect power and cut. The long finish has pear, chalk and lemon. Again, this wine manages to be creamy, chalky and sharp with acid at the same time. Simply destroyed the 05 Comtes poured earlier. Nose - 5-5.5/6, Palate - 5.5/6, Finish - 5-5.5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 17-18/20.

  • 1995 Trimbach Riesling Clos Ste. Hune 94 Points

    The nose is essence of aged Riesling: petrol, apple, creamy golden apples. Just wonderful on the palate - very dry with great acid. Lemon, minerality, crystal clear. Searing acid builds - razor sharp citrus, burning, slate, lemon, a touch spice, pear. Long and cut finish. Spectacular. Nose - 4.5-5/6, Palate - 5.5/6, Finish - 5.5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 17-17.5/20.

  • 2001 Karthäuserhof Eitelsbacher Karthäuserhofberg Riesling Auslese trocken 95 Points

    Mature nose of peach, juicy acidic citrus, great spice. Wonderful on the palate - great lemon, peach, petrol, creamy yet elegant and very sharp. Mature creaminess - not harsh at all. Finish of powerful citrus, lemon-lime, peach and spice. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5.5/6, Finish - 5.5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 17.5/20.

  • 1994 Prager Riesling Auslese Dürnsteiner Hollerin 97 Points

    Brought by Jay M. I'd never seen this wine before, or even knew it existed (I started drinking Prager with the 96's.) Wow, what a treat. Golden and rich on the nose - saline and sweet, peach, creamy, golden spices. The palate is spectacular - golden, apple, a touch of sweet, spices, baked but not overripe or soft at all. Spicy, more apples, some peach, a bit of broth - delicious. Stunning for me. One of the best Austrian wines I have ever had. Thanks Jay! Nose - 5.5/6, Palate - 5.5-6/6, Finish - 5.5-6/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5-2/2 = 18-19.5/20.

    Nose is very biscuity, malty with lemon, spice. Great. Assertive mousse on entry, lemony, malty, complex with great breadth. Brioche, spicy. Really powerful. Another great showing. Nose - 5.5/6, Palate - 5-5.5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1-1.5/2 = 16.5-17.5/20.

    Soft peachy nose, lime, spicy. Soft on the palate, some peach, honey. Not enough lift for me. Some crisp lime at the end. Maybe the 03 baby fat is still burning off, but it is hard to tell. Nose - 4.5-5/6, Palate - 4.5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 15-15.5/20.

    My 375ml. An old friend who never disappoints. Nose of molasses, apricots, figs, tangerine/mandarins, spice - fruitcake. Zing, 'it burns!' on entry - massive acid, figs, apricots, mandarins - marmalade - searing the back of the throat. Ripples of power, sweet as hell but not even a tny bit cloying. The finish is just silly: marmalade and mandarin burn and spices. Stunning. Nose - 5.5/6, Palate - 5.5/6, Finish - 5.5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 18/20.

    Wood, good plummy fruit, spice, earthy. Really powerful. Funky.
