Library Tasting with Geoff Kelly - 2005 Bordeaux

Regional Wines and Spirits, Wellington, New Zealand

Introduction

Firat of a scheduled 2 day tasting of the 2005 vintage - with a couple of high end New Zealand wines thrown in (blind) to confuse matters. The Kiwi wines were not so easy to pick out as their proportions were very similar to these Bordeauxs. Perhaps the nature of the acid is slightly leaner, but this is really grasping at straws! Sadly, the high end tasting the next day was cancelled, due to lack of interest....

Flight 1 (13 Notes)

  • 2005 Château Potensac 82 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc

Dense purple - ruby. Sweet, spicy, yet simple nose with very juicy fruit aromas, A rather light palate features bright acids and some green aspects with a nice layered finish. This is good and easy to drink - a light and simple style.

  • 2005 Château Chasse-Spleen 85 Points

France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Moulis en Médoc

Clearly denser and darker in hue that the Ch. Potensac of the same vintage. The nose, too, is more dense , featuring ripe and balanced plum and currant aromas with a touch of developed walnut nuance. Shows development in the mouth with a nice sense of drying structure. Well made and delicious and a clear step in terms of complexity above the Potensac.

  • 2005 Château Haut-Batailley 88 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

More saturated in colour than both the Chasse Sleen and Potensac 2005s. Whilst a Cabernet dominant wine, I get a lot of plummy character coming through on the nose. Spicy entrance, smooth and refined palate. Suave texture with an excellent sense of layered complexity. The oak here is generous but not over-done. A wine of beautiful ripeness.

  • 2005 Château Talbot 87 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Purple ruby hue. Classic blackcurrant and cedar cigar box aromas. Leanish in the mouth, yet refined. Feels like a Cabernet Sauvignon dominant wine. A very good wine, featuring a rich structure and tight finish.

  • 2005 Château Cantemerle 80 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

Dumb nose. Lean and slightly dilute in the mouth. This feels too high in acid. Whilst this wine is more concentrated that the 200r Potensac, for the sake of comparison, it comes across as less attractive.

  • 2005 Te Mata Estate Coleraine 86 Points

New Zealand, North Island, Hawke's Bay

Tasted blind, as a ringer in a 2005 Bordeaux tasting, this was very good and quite difficult to pick out as the NZ wine - it certainly has Bordeaux proportion. Leather, spice and plums with a touch of wood, which is most noticeable on the finish, which is slightly tough. Slightly lean in texture, this wine is going cedary already and betrays a slight hint of oxidate character on the finish, which may just be a function of this bottle.

  • 2005 La Dame de Montrose 88 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

A very dense and closed wine, that displays a lot of power and a beautiful texture. This is already supple but ideally needs further time to open out. Excellent length. This is close to outstanding and will likely get there with a bit more time. 88+

  • 2005 Clos des Jacobins 89 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Deep purple huse. Closed nose. Beautiful fruit. Shows some herbal aspects on the finish. The high Cabernet Franc (22%) certainly made itself known tonight. One of the best wines of the tasting, this features plenty of attractive oak , and a refined and beautiful balance.

  • 2005 Château Malartic-Lagravière 81 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Juicy fruit, but a slightly simple and odd nose. Light and easy to drink with hints of mocha on the finish. A touch of bitterness on the finish.

  • 2005 Stonyridge Vineyard Larose 86 Points

New Zealand, North Island, Auckland, Waiheke Island

Mint, mustard and blackcurrant nose with a hint of earth. This has a classic Cabernet Sauvignon dominant nose that is almost Paulliac in style. While clearly CS dominant, the wine is easy in the mouth with planty of earthy and herbal complexity.

  • 2005 Roc de Cambes 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Côtes de Bourg

The wine is certainly showing visual signs of development and features an open knit nose of leather, farmyard and plummy fruit with a reasonably oaky finish. Slightly astringent palate, but very long. This is excellent and for me, my top wine of the night.

  • 2005 Château d'Aiguilhe 87 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux

Purple/black hue - certainly visually, the most dense wine in the tasting. Deep, yet slightly monolithic on the nose, with some plum skin notes evident. Lean and smooth, with a lot of tannin and earthly complexity. Very concentrated - in fact, the most concentrated of all the wines drunk in the tasting.

  • 2005 Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon Moss Wood Vineyard 91 Points

Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

Cracked open at the end of a 2005 Bordeaux tasting by a generous participant, this was a fascinating bottle that clearly showed stylistic differences to the French and New Zealand wines, drunk earlier. Dense purple hue with a very ripe and lifted aroma of clean blackcurrants and mustard leaf. One can discern the generous alcohol of the wine on the nose. In the mouth, lean, compact and intense. Still young and rather undeveloped. Very new world, very clean and linear with excellent length. Impeccable wine making here and although it feels slightly "correct" at the moment, I have high hopes that this will develop great nuance with time. Bottled under stelvin. 91+
