What a great time catching up with old friends and celebrating life events and such. We tasted through eight double blinds and mixed in a few other wines.
Always a humbling experience, especially when it's such a random collection of unique wines from around the world.
2013 Domaine Bernard Baudry Chinon Rosé 90 Points
France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Chinon
So pale copper color. Nose of white cherries and white roses, floral, peaches, chalky. Tangy acid, lots of minerals, lemon juice on top of peaches, some spice and chalk, too. Loving it. Tasted blind, a confident guess of Loire Cab Franc rose.

2010 Chaude Écuelle Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre 87 Points
France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
Nose of lemon curd, peach nectar, slight honey. Medium-light bodied, tangy acid, a zippy appeal with flavors of nectarine and honeycomb. Hints of oil, honey, mountain stream, some hazelnut. The finish had this herbal spice kick that made me think Sauv Blanc, and I actually guessed this as an oaked Loire Sauvignon Blanc, but guesses were all over the place. Chenin, Austrian Sauv Blanc, one Chablis guess. Overall though, a good showing, but not what I’d expect from MdT.

2011 Broc Cellars Zinfandel Vine Starr Red 90 Points
USA, California, Sonoma County
Juicy ruby color. Nose of sweet cherries, strawberries, some earth and chestnut. Tart acid, medium-bodied, soft tannins, bold structure but fresh, too. Interesting spice, tobacco, earth and charcoal notes. Tasted blind, I guessed this as a Cru Beaujolais. It’s a really interesting Zin, that’s for sure, lots of complexity and freshness.

2011 Quinta da Pellada Jaen Dão 90 Points
Portugal, Beiras, Dão
Vibrant ruby color. Juicy raspberries on the nose, strawberries, roses, hints of cola and vanilla. Bright acid, chewy tannins, rich red plums and cherries. Round, juicy, chewy, some new oak but tempered. Tasted blind, I guessed this as a Sonoma Coast Pinot. That’s why blind tasting is humbling. I was shocked it was Portuguese, as the tannins didn’t seem to align and the wine was lacking some of the earthy spice components I associate with Dao. Delicious stuff though.

2011 Evesham Wood Pinot Noir Eola - Amity Hills 88 Points
USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Eola - Amity Hills
Light ruby color. Smoky and wild on the nose, yet light and crisp, with red apple peel and strawberries. Tart, fresh, silky, tart red berries mix with notes of rocks, graphite and smoke. The tart acid and firm tannins had me (and a more than a couple other tasters) thinking this was a Nebbiolo.

1995 Monasterio de S. Pedro de Cardena Vino de Mesa Tinto Valdevegon Seleccion Mio Cid 90 Points
Spain, La Rioja, Vino de Mesa Tinto
Juicy red color. Nose of red plums, earth, mixed herbs, black pepper. Medium acid, firm tannins but fine around the edges. Juicy red fruit, tamed by age but still bright, with notes of earth, mushroom and peppery spice. Was really impressed to see this wine was a Spanish red from a monastery. A really fascinating wine. I made a totally unconfident guess that this was a mid 90s Chateauneuf. I wasn’t surprised to see it was such a unique wine. Definitely fun to taste double blind, but a really interesting and intriguing experience most of all.

1996 Château Cantemerle 88 Points
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc
Nose of bell peppers, mushrooms, tobacco leaf on top of dried black and red currants. The tannins are still going but fined down around the edges. Medium-low acid, still chewy fruit (red plums and currants, a bit stewed but still juicy), laced with bell peppers, mushrooms, fallen leaves. I actually guessed this as a 10+ year Bordeaux blend from South Australia. Impressed at how well this has held up.

1999 Rolf Binder/Veritas Shiraz Hanisch 91 Points
Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
Nose of plum cake, roasted fig, berry compote, pepper and coffee. Bold but still firm, a smoky-rich aesthetic, with plums and blueberries. Notes of cola, vanilla, soy, coffee and mushroom. Long, quite complex. I made a confident Barossa Shiraz guess, but picked 2005. I’m impressed by how young this is showing. Veritas wines can do wonderful things with age, and I really like revisiting wines from this producer. Actually one of my favorite wines of the tasting.

2009 Philippe Pacalet Gevrey-Chambertin 90 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
Light ruby color. Cherries, roses, spice and tart red apples on the nose. Firm tannins, very young, medium acid. The cherries and red plums are tart and tangy, I also get some sweeter notes of raspberry jam, some earthy, rocky soil and nutshell notes. Quite nice but very young.
