Introduction

Some blinds with Kirk and Tooch. Notes recovered from Evernote in August 2015.

Flight 1 - Non-Blind (2 Notes)

Some wines left over from Kirk et al.'s dinner at Miyake.

Flight 2 - Blind Whites (5 Notes)

Le Chartreaux— A good yeasty semifirm cheese.

  • 2000 Domaine du Versant Doré Condrieu

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Condrieu

    WHITE 1

    Medium gold.
    Heavy aromas of honeyed caramel. Smells sweet, and tart—maybe oversweet. Secondary nutty waxiness, smells like age.
    Palate: Dry, medium+ body, tastes a little fresher than it smells. Medium+ alc, medum+ tart acidity.
    I have no idea what this is. It reminds me of the kiralyudvar dry white.

    post-reveal: Tooch got it - honeyed. oiliness on the palate.

  • 2005 Michel Colin-Deléger et Fils Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru En Remilly 91 Points

    WHITE 2
    Light gold - vibrant in the glass.
    Slight sulfur - beneath it, hints of citrus.
    Palate: super-strong tartaric acid. Clean. Super good. Fat, med+ body. Yet also ripe, elegant, classy.
    Really interesting nose, but low-intensity.

  • 2005 Domaine / Maison Vincent Girardin Meursault 1er Cru Les Charmes-Dessus

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

    WHITE 3 (kirk’s).
    Medium gold in the glass.
    Hint of pear, sea stones (stones!!!). Hint of vanilla.
    Palate: tartness, hint of wax. I don’t know what this is. We’re all confused.

    Light gold.
    Overripe starfruit! sweet nose!
    Light+ body. Delightful, crisp, slight frizzante.
    No idea what this is.

    DougS: muscadet doesn't really age... hmmmmm
    95% of muscadet is bad.... can't age... but when it's good... amazing.

    Light+ gold/tinge of green.
    Smells old and dusty, hints of burnt bread, breadiness. Smells like champagne.
    Like aged champagne.
    Palate: fresher than the nose, light, slight frizzante. On the finish… aged characteristics come out. Also faint baked apple,

Flight 3 - Blind Reds (4 Notes)

  • 2004 Domaine Robert Groffier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Sentiers 60 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

    RED 1
    Dull medium garnet.
    Slightly reductive.
    Major fecal aromas on the nose. can't get past that.
    p: thin, fecal liquid. bad tartness. not clean acidity. dirty wine. can't do this.
    not able to get over the fecal aromas....

    kirk: a little greenness on the palate. delicacy on the nose.. not powerful on the mouth.

    Nose: asparagus—not ripe... JoeG's 'sticky tannins' on the mouth. Med sticky tannins. Not ripe on palate either. Not much fruit. Light body. I guess beaujolais (kirk also)

    Really delicious brown chicu-like nose.
    Reminds me of julienas....
    Palate: light body, good balance, medium acid—elegant. Medium+ purple in glass. Medium tannins (a bit sticky in nature). Maybe 2006, as tannins are not ripe enough for 05.

    Post-reveal note on winemaking: confirmed carbonic maceration (someone had info on the wine).

    Medium+ garnet.
    Nose: warm, graham crackery, earthy soil.
    Palate: medium- body, medium acid, medium finish. Heavier than I'd think for pinot. I don't get much fruit.
