Introduction

Once again Tom and his little lady came by for a midweek dinner and some wines.
This time my parents joned us and i was surprised how well they were able to pick up the different tastes in the wine and how quickly they learned about the different areas.

Flight 1 (1 Note)

salad of mixed greens with oranges and vinegar. the wine pared really well with the sweetness of orages

  • 2003 Kurt Angerer Grüner Veltliner "Kies" 88 Points

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Kamptal

lovly nose - sweet and with lots of apples and grass. Oily and yummy palatte. Great QPR and a good buy at under $15. went really well with salad and i am sure this would work well with many dishes. Will get more of this for everyday. needs more acidity to get a higher score but the year is rather atypical. alcohol does NOT show - which seems to be an issue with some 2003's.

Flight 2 (2 Notes)

lamb (rare) and basmati rice. My wife loves cooking this and the mix of spices that goes into this is impossble for me to describe

  • 2002 Henry's Drive Cabernet Sauvignon 93 Points

Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Padthaway

deliucious smell that my mother defined as "parnoe moloko" or milk straight from the cow. Red & black fruit and lots of oak althought well integrated. 14.5 % alcohol? really? didnt show at all. This wine has it aall now - lots of fruit without being over-the-top , no stewed prunes here or "portiness"
lovely wine that has only one flaw - i am not sure that this could age and benefit from it. But at $27 - this is good stuff.

  • 2002 Turley Zinfandel Pesenti Vineyard 92 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles

WOW. sour cherry right off the bat. chocolate came later. Yes - this is over the top style but at its best. the 16% alcohol showed up a little later but then dissapeared again - this needs time. Delicious wine with little to gripe about. I know i am not supposed to like this but its really hard to. Henry's drive won though - this needs to calm down and gain balance. Wish i had a few to cellar and watch.

Flight 3 (2 Notes)

italian cookies (simple stuff - the ones with chocolate glaze on one side)

  • 1997 Cyprès de Climens 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac

this is great pate wine! amazingly this is still a baby and yet totaly balanced. the 14% of alcohol is completly hidden in this wine's lean and refined body. there is a hint of botrytis but it doesnt define the wine. This wine is delicious without being sweet, tasty withought being thick. apricots, flowers and honey dance on the nose and the palate shows great balance of backbone and fruit. YUMMY!

  • 1985 Franz Karl Schmitt Niersteiner Orbel Riesling Beerenauslese 94 Points

    Germany, Rheinhessen

WOW..i was saving this one but my perents really showed an interest in wine and i gave in.. OH MY LORD is this a beauty

petrol on the nose in the begining but it soon faded. Flowers and orange marmelade, lemons and apples... just an amazing array of flavors. in the begining it was on the leaner side but slowly the sugar reapeared which just tell you how youg this wine still is. My parents - who have never had this type of wine - not to mention a 20 yearold version just LOVED it.. my WOTN

Closing

well - the evening ended with my mother saying that next time will be at her house - this is amazing because this is a woman who swears by her semi-sweet reds and moscato d'asti. she loved the wines and the atmosphere of tasting. Ohwell -live and learn. She was asking me when i am planning to get a bigger wine cellar and give my little one to them... what the hell did i do?!
