Introduction

A variety of schedules were open on a friday night, so a small group of us met up at Phil's to eat and drink several Cali Pinots (and a few other wines too)

Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • 2005 Rainer Wess Riesling Ried Loibenberg 88 Points

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau

    Nose: There is some petrol notes to the nose along with red apples, pears, and quince.

    Taste: Medium/full bodied with medium acidity. There is a fatness to the feel with red apples, quince, and some petrol.

    Overall: This is nice and mature. There is a fatter feel to it with a refined nature.

  • 2006 Rhys Pinot Noir Alpine Vineyard 92 Points

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

    Nose: There is a darker and savory quality to the nose with raspberries, violets, dark red cherries, baking spices, brambly fruits, and some currants.

    Taste: Medium bodied with medium acidity and silky tannins. The feel is plush and silky with raspberries, violets, dark red cherries, currants, and some brambly fruits.

    Overall: The feel is sexy. This is showing a more subtle and nuanced side. This is drinking beautifully with some air and it can go for a good while longer.

  • 2009 Rhys Pinot Noir Alpine Vineyard 92 Points

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

    Nose: The nose really favors the red end of the spectrum with tart red cherries, rhubarb, strawberries, some herbal notes, and a touch of pipe tobacco.

    Taste: Medium bodied with medium+ acidity and sneaky tannins. The feel is plush and sexy with tart red cherries, herbal notes, pipe tobacco, strawberries, and some earthy notes.

    Overall: This is still very primary. The flavor is very primary in nature with a silky side to it.

  • 2010 Vilmart & Cie Champagne Premier Cru Grand Cellier d'Or 92 Points

    Nose: There is a real perfume to the nose with red and green apples, brioche, biscuits, pears, white fruits, and some mineral tones.

    Taste: Medium bodied with high acidity. The feel is polished with red apples, brioche, biscuits, pears, and some mineral notes.

    Overall: This is extremely young, but it's also extremely tasty. This clearly needs years, but it's also quite delicious right now.

  • 2008 Rivers-Marie Pinot Noir Summa Old Vines 90 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

    Nose: There is a tartness to the nose with raspberries, dark red cherries, creamed red fruits, herbs, some whole cluster, and pomegranate.

    Taste: Full bodied with medium acidity and silky tannins. The feel is plump and rich with raspberries, cranberries, pomegranate, creamed red fruits, and some whole cluster notes.

    Overall: The wine is classic Rivers-Marie. There is a creaminess to it along with tart red fruits.

Closing

This was just the pre-game for a bunch of later silliness. This definitely got us going into the night and onto a bunch more shenanigans.
